This is a theatrical anime produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the serialization of "Ghost in the Shell," a science fiction work based on the manga published by Masamune Shirow in 1989, which has been adapted for various media and boasts worldwide popularity. The film depicts the secret of the birth of the main character Motoko Kusanagi, a full-body cyborg with super wizard hacker skills, and the origin of the independent unit (=Ghost in the Shell) under the direct control of the Ministry of Home Affairs, led by her. General director and character designer is Kazuya Kise, script by Tow Ubukata, music by Cornelius, director Kazuya Nomura, chief animation director Toru Okubo, and animation production by Production I.G.

It was announced on the opening day of the fourth and final chapter of the latest "Ghost in the Shell ARISE" anime that the film will be released as a feature-length theatrical version by the end of 2015, and now it has been announced that it will be released as "Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie" in early summer 2015. Ghost in the Shell" is the fourth "Ghost in the Shell" film, following "Ghost in the Shell" (the first), "Innocence" (the second), and "Ghost in the Shell S.A.C. SOLID STATE SOCIETY 3D" (the third), if the films were made as theater films from the beginning.
