An 8TB HDD has finally arrived on the market: Seagate's ST8000AS0002. It is priced at 37,584 yen (including tax).
The ST8000AS0002 is a SATA 6Gbps 3.5-inch HDD, the largest capacity model in the "Archive HDD" series designed for cloud storage, which "can handle a 24/7 workload of 180TB per year.
They use platters with single magnetic recording technology to achieve a maximum capacity of 1.33TB per platter. The average data transfer rate is 150 MB/sec read/write, and the maximum continuous data transfer rate is 190 MB/sec read.
Other key specifications include a cache capacity of 128 MB, power consumption of 7.5 W in standard operating mode, an average of 5.0 W in idle mode, and less than 1 W in standby/sleep mode. The main unit measures 101.6 (W) x 26.11 (H) x 146.99 (D) mm and weighs 780 g.
