Manga/anime" was the most popular form of entertainment among those in their 20s (approx. 30%)! On the other hand, "Concerts (live performances)" was selected by 60% to 70% of all generations.
The results of the "Survey on Attitudes Toward Entertainment" by NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. have been released.
The survey, conducted in conjunction with the company's April 1 change to a new company name, NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc. was conducted online from December 9-11, 2014, targeting 500 men and women aged 20-69 nationwide (= 50 men and 50 women in each age group).
First, entertainment spending as a percentage of household income averaged 11.5%. While "10% or less" accounted for about 70% of all respondents, there were nearly 10% of those who spent more than 30%, and about 60% of all respondents indicated that their entertainment spending was "unchanged" from 2013 to 2014. As expected, respondents tend to be willing to spend on hobbies even with economic fluctuations and consumption tax hikes. The most sought-after qualities in entertainment are fun (78.0%), enrichment (37.6%), excitement (37.2%), and laughter (36.6%).
When asked if there is any entertainment that is most important to them that they are willing to spend money on, about 30% said "Yes. The percentage of women was 12.4 points higher at 36.0%, compared to 23.6% of men. Answers to the question, "What is your most important entertainment?" were "Live concerts" (19.5%), "Travel" (18.1%), "Music/artists" (10.1%), "Sports" (10.1%), and "Movies" (6.7%), with a minority also spending on "Birthdays," "Playing with children," "Biking," and "Drinking. The most common amount actually spent was "100,000-300,000 yen" per year (23.5%), with 40% of all respondents spending more than 100,000 yen and more than 10% spending more than 500,000 yen.
When asked who they most often enjoy entertainment with, nearly half (46.8%) of the male respondents chose "alone," followed by "family" (27.6%), "wife" (11.6%), and "friends" (8.0%). On the other hand, women's top choice was "family" (31.6%), followed by "alone" (24.4%), "friends" (18.0%), "husband" (12.8%), and "children" (8.0%). It is clear that men want to enjoy themselves at their own pace, while women want to have a lively time with someone else.
Interestingly, "Concerts (live performances)" was ranked No. 1 by age group, with around 70% of those in their 20s to 60s, and even 57% of those in their 60s gave it an overwhelmingly high rating. Theme parks" was also popular among the younger generation, coming in second place for those in their 20s-40s, fourth place for those in their 50s, and sixth place for those in their 60s, while "travel" (fifth place for those in their 60s and sixth place for those in their 50s), which is popular among seniors, was ranked eighth or lower for those in their 20s. Games" was ranked only by those in their 20s and 30s (around 30%), while "manga/anime" was ranked only by those in their 20s (35%). Although manga, anime, and games have attracted attention in recent years due to the "otaku boom," they still seem to be considered minor cultural elements by the general public.
The following is a comment from NAMCO BANDAI Games Inc.
Summary
The consumption tax hike hit the wallet and household budgets in 2014. The New Year has arrived and stock prices have risen! The economy is on the road to recovery! and the daily news tells us that consumers still cannot see the end of the tunnel. Despite this, the amount of money individuals spend on entertainment seems to be maintaining a constant ratio to their income.
The key to "entertainment" has always been "fun. In other words, we can say that "fun" is entertainment. This would explain why more than 10% of respondents support "reading," "shopping," and "chatting with friends" as entertainment, in addition to "concerts (live performances)" and "theme parks," which are "the entertainment" type. This is understandable. The variety of entertainment is wide, and it is everywhere in our daily lives. It is truly something we cannot do without.
