Results of "Survey on Awareness and Actual Conditions of Anime Viewing" conducted by Oricon were released! CS/BS: 30%, Rental: 20%, BD/DVD purchase: 10
Oricon has released the results of its "Survey on Awareness and Actual Conditions of Anime Viewing.
This is a summary of the results of an Internet survey of 1,000 men and women in their 10s to 40s from all over Japan regarding their current anime viewing habits. The survey period was March 13-20, 2015.
First, when asked if they have a favorite anime title, 70% of all respondents answered "Yes. Then, when those who answered that they do were asked about the devices they use to watch anime, about 90% said TV, followed by PCs at 45.4% and smartphones at 15.4%. Tablet devices currently account for only 6.8%, but are expected to increase in the future, with 13.8% indicating their intention to use them. Reasons given included "Because I can easily watch it anywhere," (20s female/Tokyo), "I often watch on my futon, so a smartphone is convenient," (30s male/Tokyo), and "I want to watch it easily while traveling," (20s female/Kanagawa). One out of every five smartphone users watches anime on their smartphones.
In terms of viewing mode, terrestrial broadcasting accounted for 90.3%, CS/BS broadcasting for 32.9%, BD/DVD rental for 24.4%, streaming services for 12.0%, and BD/DVD purchase for 11.7%. The percentage of willingness was high for Internet on-demand methods such as streaming services and download purchases, while the percentage of willingness was low for TV and BD/DVD. Although there is still a gap between the two, these results suggest that the day when Internet distribution becomes the mainstream is not far off.
In addition, 96.8% of respondents watch anime while "relaxing at home," 26.2% while "eating at home," and 3.7% while "waiting for something. Although the top two choices are heavily skewed, the spread of mobile devices is increasing the intention to watch while waiting for something, while riding public transportation (trains, buses, etc.), and while taking a bath.
