The broadcast is over, and they want me to write a new song! (laugh)──TECHNOBOYS talks about the backstage of "Trinity Seven" music production in a refreshingly freewheeling manner!
An open interview with TECHNOBOYS PULCRAFT GREEN-FUND ("TECHNOBOYS") took place on May 17, 2015 at the ORB booth at the Spring Headphone Festival 2015 at Nakano Sunplaza. The seats in the booth were almost full, and the three members (Fujimuratoworu, Yohei Matsui, and Tomohisa Ishikawa) spoke in their own unadorned words about the secret story behind the creation of the music for the TV anime "Trinity Seven", sometimes even dropping bombshells. Audio/visual writer Kenji Nomura, who is a close friend of the group, joined them as a commentator, and this is a transcript of the very lively interview!
The live performance at Billboard Live Tokyo was nothing short of "Izawa-san was so cute!
─ ─ Since we are borrowing ORB's booth, let's start with a look back at the "- ORB presents - 'Unlimited tone × TECHNOBOYS P.G. Premium Live'" held at Billboard Live Tokyo on February 1 this year. Matsui: I would like to ask you to look back on the event.
Matsui: The space of Billboard Live Tokyo was wonderful, but the guest, Shiori Izawa, was even cuter than that (laughs).
Fujimura: Matsui was singing beside her, and I could see from the back that she was grinning the whole time (laughs).
Ishikawa He is a creepy old man (laughs).
─ ─ I would like to play Ms. Izawa's solo of "Witch☆Activity" from the live performance, so that the audience can understand how cute she is.
(After listening to the song) It was so cute when she started singing and said, "I'm coming! (after listening to the song) It was cute that she said "I'm going!
Ishikawa: If someone said that to me, I would go anywhere (laugh).
Matsui What time and where should I go? (laugh). And another special guest, Hideaki Matsuoka! It was a quintessential great performance by him, raising the tension between us and the audience with a Witch song and Matsuoka-san's debut song. Above all, all the instruments were surrounded by clear sound through ORB cables, making it a luxurious live performance.
Fujimura: We would like to continue the live concerts in the future.
Director Nishikori of "Trinity Seven" was a fan of ours (laughs)
─ ─ For this interview, I would like to focus on the music for "Trinity Seven," which TECHNOBOYS worked on after "Witchcraft Works.
Fujimura: We started with a meeting after "Witchcraft Works" had finished airing. What came up at that time was that we wanted to take the music in a different direction from that of "Witchcraft Works.
─ Did you want to create something that would surpass the previous work?
Matsui: No, we don't have that kind of passion to make something that surpasses the previous work (laughs).
Ishikawa We are not a rock band (laughs).
Fujimura: The soundtrack of "Trinity Seven" had a major feature of using voice actors' voices, so I knew that it would not be the same as "Witchcraft Works" no matter how we tried to make it.
─ ─ What other requests did the animation side have for the accompaniment?
Ishikawa: There was a director, Hiroshi Nishikiori, who was a fan of TECHNOBOYS. He brought the soundtrack CDs we had made and said, "I have listened to all of them. What should we do this time? He said, "Please make a new song for TECHNOBOYS. We have no other requests.
Matsui: They said they didn't want short songs, like 30 seconds or something, so they wanted me to make sure each song was well written. I thought they wanted me to make an album in a few months (laughs).
(Laughter).
Fujimura: It's not one album, but a couple of songs. Although we were told there were no requests, it was actually a very high hurdle to overcome.
The result is the album "TRINITY SEVEN : MAGUS MUSIC ARCHIVE," a two-disc set with a total of 40 songs. It is true that scatting and voices of voice actors are used throughout the album.
Fujimura: That was producer Junnosuke Sato's idea. That is the most important point.
Ishikawa: The voice actors were very confused during the recording.
Matsui They were forced to say words incessantly. For example, "Luxuria, Luxuria" (laughs).
Fujimura: Even if I said, "This one is a little different," they couldn't understand what the difference was (laughs). (Laughs.) Moreover, some of the recordings were made before the recording of the full-length film, in other words, before the performance of the role. At such a stage, we asked them to become the actors and speak Latin (laughs).
Ishikawa: "More like a robot. I also asked them to say "Ah" for each scale.
─ In this case, the voices are the material, and later they will be scattered throughout the song.
Matsui: That's right. We are probably the only band that has the voice samples of all seven voice actors. It is a luxury, isn't it?
Fujimura: We can never use them again, though (laughs).
──Don't you use them in your private life?
Matsui: Like an alarm voice? No, I don't! (laughs)
Fujimura: It would be dangerous to answer "I use it" (laughs).
