Vol.2 "Lupin the Third," "Osomatsu-san," and other "revival blockbusters" that will bring tears to the eyes of old men!
The new fall anime are finally coming out, and there are quite a few of them this season. Akiba Research Institute (Anipota) has published "2015 Autumn Anime," a quick and comprehensive list of new fall anime, and as of September 16, a whopping 62 new titles have been picked up. As of September 16, a whopping 62 new works have been selected. For those who are at a loss as to which ones to watch, the main purpose of this series is to introduce the most noteworthy works under each theme.
In this second installment, we will focus on the "revival blockbusters" that are quite prominent this fall. These are not mere sequels, but rather ambitious works that revive historical masterpieces made decades ago with a modern approach. I am not sure why there are so many "revival blockbusters" only this fall, but at any rate, there is no shortage of topics about this type of work this fall. These are all masterpieces that should be checked out not only by the older generation, those who have seen the original works as children and were left with a strong impression, but also by the younger generation who have never heard of the original works. We have selected five of them to introduce here.
For a detailed list of TV anime (fall anime) that will start this fall, please check "2015 Fall Anime" here.
New TV series "Lupin the Third
The new "Lupin the Third" TV series is one of the most notable anime among all the fall anime, not just revivals. After all, this is the first new TV series in 30 years, since the end of "Lupin the Third Part III" in 1985. Although "Lupin" is such a famous series that there is no one who has not heard of it, it has been a long time since the last TV series was produced.
The staff lineup is sure to convince you of the quality of the film even before you see it. The general director is Kazuhide Tomonaga, who participated as an animator and animation director in the "Lupin vs. the Reproduction Man" movie (original picture) and "The Castle of Cagliostro" movie (original picture, all car chases), and the series composition is by Yuichiro Yano, who also directed "LUPIN THE IIIRD: Tombstone of Daisuke Jigen" and "TIGER & BUNNY. BUNNY", and the atmosphere of the film is likely to be that of a Lupin for adults. The music is by Yuji Ohno, who has created many famous songs for the Lupin III series. There is no reason why this can't be fun.
The voice cast also includes such familiar faces as Kanichi Kurita, Kiyoshi Kobayashi, Daisuke Namikawa, Miyuki Sawashiro, and Koichi Yamadera. With the introduction of a new character, "Rebecca," the adventures of Lupin and his friends are sure to be exciting!
Young Black Jack
Osamu Tezuka, the "God of Manga," created the famous "Black Jack" series. Young Black Jack" (script by Yoshiaki Tabata, manga by Yugo Okuma) is a manga that depicts the young days of Black Jack and is currently serialized in "Young Champion" magazine. How did he become an unlicensed black market doctor who demands exorbitant amounts of money, when he was honing his skills as a medical student, yearning for the surgeon who saved his life? This is a hard-boiled work that can be enjoyed by Tezuka fans and non-fans alike, as it reveals Black Jack's unknown past.
Young Black Jack" will be adapted into an anime this fall. This will be the first Tezuka work to be animated for TV in about 12 years, since "Astroboy Astroboy" in 2003. The director is Mitsuko Kase, who directed "Ristorante Paradiso" and "The Last Weapon Girlfriend," and the series composition and supervisor is Ryosuke Takahashi, who directed "Firebird" and "Armored Trooper Votoms," so there are high expectations for how well the essence of Tezuka's works will be expressed. Of course, animation production will be handled by Tezuka Productions.
Osomatsu-san
Everyone must be thinking, "No way! I am sure everyone must have thought, "No way! That's how sensational the news was this summer. The master of nonsense gag manga, Fujio Akatsuka's masterpiece, "Osomatsu-kun," is to be revived in the modern age. And as "Osomatsu-san," the sextuplets who have grown up. What kind of nonsense is this?
For those who are not familiar with the original work, "Osomatsu-kun" is a gag manga published by Fujio Akatsuka in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in 1962 and became an explosive hit. The first "Osomatsu-kun" anime version (black-and-white animation) was broadcast from 1966, and the second one from 1988, but this is the first new work to be broadcast in 27 years. Those who watched the first black-and-white animation as children are already around 60 years old. It is truly amazing that a manga/anime work with such a long history is being revived this year.
Speaking of "Osomatsu-kun," we must not forget not only the six main characters but also the supporting players who have become more famous than the main characters: "Totoko," the girl the six children admire; "Chibita," who is undaunted no matter what; "Iyami," whose gag of shouting "Shae" has become a national buzzword; and "Dekamatsu," whose vertically striped underpants are so impressive that they have become the most popular character in the series. The "Dekapan" with his impressive vertically striped pants, "Dayone" whose habit of speaking became his name, and other famous characters who make up Fujio Akatsuka's nonsense world will of course also appear.
This alone is enough to make one marvel, but the voices of the six children will be voiced by a cast of the most exciting and splendid people of the moment, including Takahiro Sakurai, Yuichi Nakamura, Hiroshi Kamiya, Jun Fukuyama, Daisuke Ono, Miyu Irino, and Aya Endo, which has also attracted a great deal of attention.
Anyway, you should watch it without worrying about the details!
THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO
THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO is a British-born live-action special effects (puppet show). It was first broadcast in 1965, half a century ago. The first broadcast in Japan was in 1966 on NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation), so there are quite a few people who saw this work as a child. The unique atmosphere of the world, the highly detailed characters despite being a puppet show, and, above all, the mecha operated by the main characters, the "International Rescue Team," and the gimmicks related to the mecha, are probably the most attractive features of this work. From the base, it is cool. For no reason at all, the walls of the room slam down and you go straight down the ramp to the mecha. The mecha doesn't launch normally, but by breaking the ground or knocking over a palm tree. The second mecha, which has surpassed the first mecha in popularity, has the utility of being able to wear a variety of equipment by changing containers.
Fifty years later, "Thunderbirds" has been revived as a CG-based animated film (with some live action). This is "THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO. A few episodes have already been aired in advance, and the quality is quite good. It faithfully reproduces the gimmicks and other elements of the original without losing any of its original quality. Moreover, the detailed CG graphics make the activities of the "International Rescue Team" even more powerful and enjoyable.
This is a work that will surely be enjoyed not only by those who have fond memories of the old days, but also by those who are experiencing this world for the first time.
Cyborg 009 VS Devilman
Although this is not a TV animation but an OVA released in theaters, it is a work that cannot be missed in the "revival blockbusters" that will appear this fall. This fall, "Cyborg 009," a masterpiece by Shotaro Ishinomori, and "Devil Man," a masterpiece by Go Nagai, will be revived! That alone is a surprise, but what's more, they are going to appear together! And they fight! I don't know what that means, but a cyborg warrior and a demonic dark hero, who are completely different types, will be competing on the same screen. Just hearing this, the "I can't wait to see it! I can't stop myself from wanting to see it!
The film will be screened at Shinjuku Wald 9 and other venues for a limited two-week period starting October 17. Don't miss this opportunity!
In this "Autumn New Anime Spotlight" Vol. 3, we will introduce some of the "completely new" anime titles that will be of interest this fall. Please look forward to it!
