<Story
As the wave of the Industrial Revolution swept across the world and the modern era was about to give way to the modern era, an immortal creature suddenly appeared. It is said that it will not perish unless its heart, which is covered with a steel coating, is shot through, and that those bitten by it will also revive and attack people after dying. The creatures, which later came to be known as kabane, multiplied explosively and covered the entire world.
The people of the Far Eastern island nation of Hinomoto managed to survive by building fortresses called "stations" in various parts of the country and shutting themselves away in them in order to counter the Kabane threat. Only thickly armored, armored steam locomotives (commonly known as hayajiro) were able to come and go between stations, and the stations managed to maintain their livelihood by exchanging their products with each other.
Ikoma, a boy steam smith, lives in Araganeki Station, where iron manufacturing and steam engine production are the mainstay of life. He has been developing his own weapon, the "tsuranuki-tube," to defeat the kabane, and longs for the day when he will be able to demonstrate his power.
Then one day, Koutetsujo, one of the Sunjo, arrives at Kenkin Station after passing through the front line. Ikoma, who was sent to clean and maintain the vehicles, witnesses a mysterious girl who is exempted from the obligatory Kabane censorship.
That night, while Ikoma is reunited with the daytime girl who calls herself Mumei, Sunjo rushes into Kenshin Station, running amok. The entire crew had been wiped out and turned into cabanes! Kabanes overflowed into Hyeonjin Station. Ikoma runs against the wave of panic-stricken people. This time I will not run away, I will defeat the kabanes with my tsuranuki tube!
--- Thus begins Ikoma's battle to become a truly shining man.
