Sushi police anime "SUSHI POLICE" (SUSHI POLICE), theme song by Perfume! Collaboration with US rock band "OK Go
Perfume will sing the theme song from the TV anime "SUSHI POLICE," which will start in January 2016.
SUSHI POLICE" won the Hollywood Reporter's THE 2015 CANNES POSTER AWARDS at the 2015 Cannes International Film Festival's Film Market. The anime will be broadcast from January 6, 2016 as a commemorative anime. The story follows Honda (CV: Akira Yamashita), Suzuki (CV: Masaka Ifumasa), and Kawasaki (CV: Hiromitsu Okamoto) as they fight to protect "proper food culture" and is based on the actual Sushipolis riots* that took place in 2006.
In 2006, the Japanese government, concerned about the spread of incorrect Japanese food overseas, announced the establishment of the "Overseas Japanese Restaurant Certification System," a system for certifying correct Japanese restaurants, which was ridiculed as "Sushipolis is coming! The Japanese government decided not to implement the system after the Washington Post and other foreign media outlets simultaneously bashed the system, ridiculing it as "Sushipolis coming!
The TV series' theme song will be "I Don't Understand You" by OK Go x Perfume. The song is a collaboration between the techno-pop unit "Perfume" and the American rock band "OK Go," and was created after the two had appeared in each other's music videos in the past. Incidentally, the arrangement was done by Yasutaka Nakata (CAPUSULE), a well-known musician. This is the first time "Perfume" has collaborated with another artist on a song, whether in Japan or abroad, and is expected to draw worldwide attention along with "SUHI POLICE," which depicts the culture gap between Japan and other countries. Here is a comment from the artist.
SUHI POLICE" is currently undergoing global expansion. In China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, "SUHI POLICE" will be distributed simultaneously with Japan on "bilibili," a major video sharing website in China. In Thailand, a contract has been signed with "Dream Express," a major agency that also handles original animation at its own studio (the timing of the start of broadcast is currently being adjusted). In the Philippines, a contract has been signed with Telesuccess Productions, a major distributor that develops media business mainly for TV (*The start date of airing is currently being adjusted). In Europe, an agent contract was signed with a major sales company, Celluloid Dreams. Many offers are also coming in from the U.S. and Mexico.

I am a big fan of OK Go, and it is a dream come true for me to be able to work with him even on a song. What we talked about backstage when OK Go came to see us at our U.S. concert really came true. It's amazing how dynamic people from overseas can be! It's really CREATIVE!The sense of music that Damian creates is indescribably stylish and comfortable dance tunes.Across oceans, across countries, across labels... UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!! to be able to perform together like this! Thank you so much to all of you. I am very happy~! I wish we could collaborate live too!

I thought it was a dream come true when I collaborated with my favorite band OK Go for a music video, but now I'm so incredibly happy to be able to collaborate with them on a song!I have felt through my world tour thatcultural differences sometimes make it difficult to come to terms with each other, but when we can understand each other, it isa greatjoy.I hope this song will make many people interested in the Japanese language and Japan.

You know what? Collaboration with OK Go! I can't believe it.I wanted to sing all the songs because they were all so cool.I wanted to sing all the songs. I already had a song in my head, but itwasso comfortable to be in OK Go's worldviewthat I was very happy to record the song.

We have been big fans of Perfume for a long time, and we share their drive, innovation, and creative ideas. It is inspiring to see how great ideas can transcend language and cultural barriers. It is a moment when you feel connected to that other person in a situationwhere even simple communication is difficult. In that sense, wewere very happy tocollaborate on each other's music videos last year, and in the process, we started to want to collaborate even more. The original idea was very simple, to portray cultural differences in a funny way, andwe titled it "I Don't Understand You" (I Don't Understand You).To make the idea a little more universal, we replaced the cultural differences in the song with romantic troubles between men and women.By doing this, we created three stories in the song. The stories are about a man and a woman, Japan and the U.S., and Perfume and OK Go.
Tatsufumi Kiwami ( Director of "SUSHI POLICE" )
I had no idea that the theme song would be a collaboration between OK Go and Perfume! The lyrics, "I Don't Understand You," are a perfect representation of "SUSHI POLICE.The groovy, yet slightly sad chorus is the best! You will definitely have it on repeat in your brain!
Kensuke Kuriko ( Producer of "SUSHI POLICE" )
While considering thetheme song for "SUSHI POLICE," which depicts the culture gap between Japan and other countries in terms of "sushi" and "SUSHI,"Perfume, who is extremely well-known and popular overseas as well, was asked to write the song for the first time.We askedOK Goto sing the theme song for "SUSHI POLICE" becausewe heard that they were going to collaborate with OK Go, and the songcould not be a better match with the nature of the film. The theme song is most appropriate for this film, asone phrase repeated in the sophisticated musicseems to suggest the theme of this film, whichis how to overcome what we don't understand. Please enjoy the theme song along with the film!
