Director Kazuya Sakamoto and Screenwriter Shigeki Nagakawa took the stage to talk about "Her and Her Cat -Everything Flows-". Director Kazuya Sakamoto and screenwriter Shigeki Nagakawa took the stage to talk about the secret story behind the production of the film.
On May 21, 2016, a screening and talk show of the complete version of "She and Her Cat -Everything Flows-" was held. Director Kazuya Sakamoto and series composition/screenplay writer Shigeki Nagakawa took the stage at the Shimokitazawa Tollywood venue. They shared episodes that they could only talk about now that they have finished the production.
Akiba Research Institute will report on the event, which was a great success. We hope you will enjoy it as well as the exclusive interview with director Sakamoto that we posted right after the event.
Shimokitazawa Tollywood is a mini-theater where Makoto Shinkai's self-produced anime "Her and Her Cat" was first screened, and is considered a sacred place for fans. 15 years after the 2001 screening, the TV anime "Her and Her Cat -Everything Flows-", which will be broadcast in March 2016, will be shown for one week only. The event on the first day of the screening was attended by many people. On the first day of the screening, the event was packed with visitors, with some even standing in line. The TV anime version seems to have captured the hearts of not only fans of the original work but also new viewers, as it attracted a wide age range of audiences, both male and female.
The event began with a screening of the complete version of all four episodes of the TV series, with new cuts added. In the newly produced opening video, the opening theme "Glass Eyes" sung by Kana Hanazawa, who plays Miyu, was also unveiled, and fans were intoxicated by her beautiful voice. After the screening of the film, director Kazuya Sakamoto and Shigeki Nagakawa appeared on stage to thunderous applause from the fans.
The two looked around the packed room and seemed a little nervous. With a shy smile on his face, Director Sakamoto opened the talk show by saying, "You are so close," a sight unique to Tollywood, where the audience is less than one meter away from the seats.
First, the MC asked the audience, "Did anyone see the first screening of the original "She and Her Cat" at Tollywood?" to the audience, which led to a surprising turn of events when Mr. Nagakawa raised his hand instead of the audience. Mr. Nagakawa commented, "At the time, there was no video streaming, so I could only watch it at Tollywood." He looked deeply moved, saying, "I never thought I would be on the stage after more than a decade.
Director Sakamoto's feelings were actually complicated by the fact that the original work has a large number of fans. He said that he was at a loss to direct a re-animation of an animated film and not Shinkai, and wondered to the producers, "What are these grownups thinking? He also wondered "What are these adults thinking? However, Comics Wave Film, to which Shinkai belongs, offered him the freedom to create the animated TV series as long as he would respect the themes and essence of the original work.
When the decision was made to go with an original story, the only person they considered for the script was Mr. Nagakawa, who had worked on the novelized version. Director Sakamoto expressed his complete confidence in Mr. Nagakawa, saying, "Mr. Nagakawa has a firm understanding of the way Shinkai-san spins his words. I am very happy that he was able to craft each and every line and sentence properly," he said.
Mr. Nagakawa added, "I thought that if someone else had written the script, I wouldn't have allowed it. It would have been frustrating. When asked about episodes during the scenario writing process, Mr. Nagakawa shared an anecdote: "I learned the Shinkai taste by endlessly replaying the original anime. He smiled as he said, "I thought I was the one who was listening to Shinkai-san's voice the most in the world.
Director Sakamoto also touched on the storyline, mentioning how Chobi's appearance in the final episode connects the story to the world of the original work, He also mentioned that he wanted to create a work with a broad range of possibilities. Nagakawa, who heard of this idea, also reflected on the time of production, saying, "I thought this was a good idea because it had a solid structure that evoked a sense of reincarnation.
On the other hand, director Sakamoto also confessed that he was anxious about the film, saying, "I was afraid of how Shinkai-san's fans would react to the title, given that it was given to me by Shinkai-san. He also shyly confessed that he had a bit of a calculation in his mind, thinking that if there were points that were connected to the original work, Shinkai's fans would accept the film, in addition to the intention of expanding the work. However, he seemed to be satisfied with the response he received from various people as a result of these tricks.
When the show went on the air, the two were relieved that it was well received, but they also mentioned that there was one unexpected reaction. That was that the students who were currently job hunting were shocked to see Miyu fail to find a job in the first episode, as if it were their own lives. Mr. Nagakawa says that he did not expect it to be so damaging at all. Director Sakamoto also commented that he did not intend to portray the situation in a serious manner, saying, "I did not consider Miyu's suffering from job hunting to be that important in the overall story. He said that he did not intend to portray Miyu's difficulties in job hunting as serious. He said that the truly painful part that Miyu is having is the result of the accumulation of various experiences in her life, including the family environment depicted in the second and subsequent episodes. She shared her thoughts, "Basically, it's a positive story, so I made it with the hope that people will do their best even though they are going through hard times.
In the latter half of the talk show, a question-and-answer session was held. The question was, "Why did you choose a black cat for Dal?" He answered that if he had made him a white cat, there was a fear that he would be mistaken for Chobi. But that is not the only reason. The color black has a variety of meanings, he said. For example, as a behind-the-scenes story that he has not even told Mr. Nagakawa, he revealed his initial conception: "Dal was a stray cat for nearly two years after he was separated from his parents. Because he was a black cat, he was able to survive without being caught by humans by hiding in the dark night. Although the cat was not depicted in the film for reasons of length, it was an act that showed his attention to detail.
Director Sakamoto concluded his talk by saying, ""Her and Her Cat" has been made in various forms, including novelization and comic adaptation, and it can be seen in various ways. If you look back at it 10 or 20 years from now, you will see it in a different light," she said. I hope you will love this work for a long time. Thank you very much.
After the event, an autograph session was held for those who purchased the Blu-ray, DVD, and novel, which was well attended by the many fans in attendance.
At the event, the first "Her and Her Cat EF" goods were on sale: acrylic key chains, wood straps, and can badges. These items are sure to be a must-have for fans, and are sure to attract the attention of director Sakamoto, who is a cat lover.
