Makoto Shinkai's latest theatrical animation "Kimi no na wa. and a new key visual is unveiled!

Makoto Shinkai's latest animated film "Kimi no na wa. which will be released in theaters on August 26, 2016 (Friday).

Makoto Shinkai is an animation director who has created ambitious animated films such as "5 Centimeters per Second" and "The Garden of Words. His unique touch and lyricism are known as the "Shinkai World," and his works have been highly acclaimed both in Japan and abroad.

The long-awaited new work by director Makoto Shinkai is "Kimi no na wa. which will be released in theaters this August. This film is a story of love and miracles between a boy and a girl who "switch places" in their dreams. The drama of "distance" created by the gap and connection between two people from different worlds is depicted with overwhelming visual beauty and scale. Masashi Ando, who has worked on many Studio Ghibli films, including "Spirited Away," will serve as animation director. He also directed "My Heart is Screaming. The film will be produced by a splendid staff, including Masaga Tanaka, who has become one of the leading animators of the new era with works such as "The Heart Cries Out for You. The music, including the theme song, will be performed by the rock band "Radwimps," whose unique worldview and melodies have garnered enthusiastic support.

Ryunosuke Kamiki, a well-known young actor, will play the role of Taki, the boy that Mitsuba sees in her dream, and Mone Kamihiraishi, who won the role in an audition, will play the heroine Mitsuba, who is at the mercy of her own destiny. The cast also includes Masami Nagasawa, Etsuko Ichihara, and others, and the film's cast is a gorgeous one that transcends the boundaries between animation and live-action.

The new key visual released this time depicts the hero, Taki, and heroine, Miyo, passing each other on a staircase in Tokyo. In fact, the visual is an original image specially drawn by the production team for the promotion of the film, in accordance with the theme of the story, "An Encounter of Two People Who Are Not Supposed to Meet. The visuals are linked to the content of the film, and viewing the visuals after seeing the film is sure to bring new emotions to the viewer! This is a good thing.

<Story
One month before the arrival of the first comet in 1,000 years, a high school girl in a mountainous countryside lives in a small town.
Mitsuha, a high school girl living in a rural town deep in the mountains, spends her days in melancholy.
Her father, the mayor, is campaigning for election, and there is an old custom at her family's shrine.
At her age, she is more concerned about her surroundings in this small, cramped town, and her longing for the city only grows stronger.
Please make me a handsome boy in Tokyo in my next life!
Then one day, he dreams that he is a boy.
He sees an unfamiliar room, strange friends, and the streets of Tokyo spread out before his eyes.
Mitsuba is bewildered, but she is enjoying her longed-for life in the city to the fullest.
Meanwhile, Taki, a high school boy living in Tokyo, also had a strange dream.
In a town deep in the mountains he has never been to, he finds himself as a high school girl.
The strange dream repeats itself. And, memories and time are clearly missing.
Eventually, the two realize...

Taki and Mitsuha are bewildered by their switched bodies and lives, but gradually come to terms with their reality.
The two meet each other in a way they never met before. The wheels of fate are now in motion.
