Actress Mayu Matsuoka as Masaya Ishida (elementary school student)
This is my third voice acting job, but this is the one that was the closest to realism, so I thought I would try to create a role that I usually do in live-action. When I looked again at Masaya Ishida as a character, I could see the pure Masaya with no ill intentions. It was a new challenge for me, and at first I was very frustrated at how difficult it was to put my performance on just my voice, but gradually I think I was able to build a relationship of trust with Director Yamada. I am truly honored to have been able to see the first signs of a bridge between voice acting and acting. Masaya has become an irreplaceable boy for me.

Director Naoko Yamada (Kyoto Animation)
When I thought about the elementary school boy Masaya, he suddenly came to my mind. I am sure that I was shaking hands with Matsuoka-san's Shoya at that time. I wanted to know what kind of sensitivities she had inside her that would give birth to Shoya, so I asked her to do it.
<My impression after the post recording
She showed me a lot of Masaya in each take. I was really excited to see how Masaya started to breathe and move around in Matsuoka-san's mind. During the entire time, Mr. Matsuoka seemed to be in dialogue with Masaya.
During the performance, there was a moment when we heard Mr. Irino's live voice of Masaya, and Masaya Matsuoka was wonderful. He was able to make the elementary school student Masaya and the high school student Masaya exist as the same person.
I don't think he usually performs with only his voice, so I think he must have been constrained in many ways, but I was so impressed by his tremendous sensitivity and sense that I didn't feel that at all....

Ryotoki Ohimai (original author)
<Impressions after the post recording
I thought the acting was very natural. The way he spoke like a real sixth grader was exactly how I imagined Masaya as a child. His voice was very appealing, especially when he yelled.
