A few weeks after the first battle with the Allied Forces of the Cooperative Union. Tanya is praised for her war heroics and is recognized as an extremely talented mage officer, and is assigned to the war techniques teaching corps in the Imperial Capital, even though she is still a child. Tanya is inwardly delighted to have the safe rear duty she had longed for, but the assignment awaiting her at her new post is to test a dangerous new type of computing bead. The performance of the prototype she was assigned to verify was extremely unstable, and all the tests failed. The chief engineer, Schugel, is a mad scientist who is willing to make human sacrifices for the sake of development. He turns a deaf ear to Tanya's pleas to stop the tests and forces her to carry out the experiments without regard for safety. Tanya finally fears for her life and submits an application for transfer to the Technical Bureau's headquarters.
