Animation film "In a Corner of the World" drew an audience of 1.5 million and grossed over 2 billion yen at the box office!

The number of viewers for the animation film "In a Corner of the World," now in theaters, exceeded 1.5 million.

The film is based on the manga series by Fumiyo Kono, serialized in Manga Action (published by Futabasha). The film depicts the lives of people who lived as they should have during the war, featuring Suzu, a girl who married at the age of 18 in Kure, Hiroshima Prefecture, in the 1940s and 1945s. The film is directed by Sunao Katabuchi, director of "Mai Mai Shinko and the Magic of a Thousand Years," who spent six years meticulously researching Kure during and after World War II and verifying the period.

In its 14th weekend of release on February 11 (Sat.) and 12 (Sun.), the film grossed approximately 62 million yen and drew 40,000 viewers, ranking 8th in the nationwide weekend movie attendance rankings (according to Kogyo Tsushinsha). This was its 14th consecutive week in the top 10. The total number of moviegoers to date is 1.5 million, and the box-office revenue has exceeded 2 billion yen.

The film has been highly acclaimed at various film awards, winning 17 awards as of February 13. At the 71st Mainichi Film Awards, the film won three awards: the Japanese Film Excellence Award, the Noburo Ohto Award, and the Music Award. At the awards ceremony held on Wednesday, February 15, director Sunao Katabuchi, NON (who plays Suzu), and Kotoringo attended the awards ceremony and opening ceremony, and Kotoringo performed the opening theme of the film, Kotringo will also perform the opening theme song of the film, "Sad and Unfulfilled," live at the awards ceremony.
