A sense of space here and there! GARNiDELiA Releases New Song "SPEED STAR

GARNiDELiA" will release a new single "SPEED STAR". This song is the theme song for "The Lesser Students of Magical High School the Movie: The Girl Who Calls the Stars," which will be released in theaters nationwide on June 17, 2017. Since the theater version is set in space, the sound has a spacey feel that is typical of GARNiDELiA. Meilia and TOKU talked to us about the latest news, which was first revealed at the final (Tokyo) show of their recent national tour!

SPEED STAR" is a song that had a miraculous encounter with this theater version!

─ Your tour "GARNiDELiA stellacage TOUR 2017~Cry Out~" started in April and reached its final performance in Tokyo on June 11. How was the response to the tour?

Meilia: The audience was very enthusiastic and excited at all venues. Nagoya, Sendai, and Fukuoka were many of the venues we visited for the first time as a one-man show, and I was happy to hear positive reactions from those who had seen GARNiDELiA perform live for the first time. We were able to brush up on the content each time, and I think the final Tokyo show was the culmination of the tour.

─ ─ At the Tokyo show, the latest information was also released. First of all, let me ask you about your new single "SPEED STAR," which is a collaboration with the TV anime "Magical High School Underdog.

toku This is the first time in about 3 years, following the opening theme "grilletto" of the TV anime "The Lesser Students of Magical High School".

Meilia I was honored to be asked again.

How did you go about writing "SPEED STAR"?

Meilia: Actually, we wrote this song three years ago and had been warming up to it for a long time. It was our favorite song, so we wanted to release it as a single, not as a coupling song or a song on an album. When GARNiDELiA was asked to sing the theme song for "The Lesser Students of Magical High School the Movie: The Girl Who Calls the Stars," I thought, "This is the only place to do it! I thought, "This is the only place to do it!

toku Of course, we submitted other candidate songs, and they were chosen from among them.

───So it turned out that the song was chosen exactly as you both wanted it to be.

Meilia: We submitted the lyrics of the first song without making any changes, because they fit the story of this movie version. For us, it was a miraculous encounter between the music and the work.

─ ─ What part of the first lyric did you change?

Meilia: Originally, it was written in a female language. I changed it to a neutral ending so that Tatsuya's point of view could be understood. That's all. The title "SPEED STAR" was also originally there, and when I learned that the subtitle of the movie version was "The Girl Who Calls the Stars," I thought, "This is it! I thought, "This is it!

toku We didn't modify the melody very much. I have made many minor, up-tempo songs, but this song is somewhat different, and the feeling when it enters the chorus is fresh. It is a song that I have a strong emotional attachment to, so I am very happy that you will be able to hear it in the theater.

Meilia: Yes, I am happy that you will be able to hear this song in full size at the theater. We can't wait to experience it too. I think we will be able to experience the feeling of being enveloped by the sound.

─ ─ In terms of sound, there is a sense of space, isn't there?

Meilia: It is quite cosmic. For the movie version, TOKU created a spectacular sound because the older brother is going to space. There are sounds like shooting stars in it.

─ Did you write the full-size lyrics after knowing the story of the movie version?

Meilia: I read the scenario and wrote the lyrics. I think one of the themes of "The Lesser Students of Magical High School" is "defying unreasonableness. Tatsuya is trying his best despite being told many things by those around him, and I think it is the same for everyone. We are in the music industry, and you, the listeners, are in school and in society, and the song is a reminder to stick up for yourself no matter what. I wanted the lyrics to push people who are lost, so I consciously used strong words.

─ I felt that the song expresses the strength of believing in yourself and moving forward.

Meilia: I linked not only Tatsuya's thoughts, but also those of Cocoa, the heroine of the movie version. She is told to be a good girl, but she doesn't want to stay there. The fact that I am holding a chain in the jacket photo is also connected to that, and it has a meaning of liberation to freedom.

───The costumes for this jacket are all white for both of you, aren't they?

Meilia: I have always wanted to try wearing only white. The costumes for "grilletto" were also white, so I wanted to create a world of pure white while continuing that trend. Even though it is the same white, I combined various materials, such as enamel and leather, and if you look closely, you can see the difference in materials.

─ ─ What was the concept behind the music video for "SPEED STAR"?

Meilia: First of all, I wanted it to have a spacey feel. The director and I discussed, "Let's make it a spacey one.

toku: He listened to a lot of what we wanted to do.

Meilia Another great feature of the film is that the band and dancers were filmed together, two essential elements of a GARNiDELiA live performance, and the result is a film that gives the audience a live experience.

toku In terms of colors, we continued the black-and-white style from "grilletto".

Meilia: The white and black costumes change during the dance scenes. I was conscious of the connection with "The Lesser Student of Magical High School" in the music video as well. We didn't use image processing to make the costumes black and white; we shot the music video twice, once with the white costume and once with the black costume. It was very difficult because if the timing of the dance or the position of the body shifted even a little, it would be no good.

─ ─ The band scene was also cool.

Meilia: We filmed with the band members who were on a live tour together. We had a lot of fun filming the performance because we were all in sync with each other.
