Director Habara and Harutoshi Fukui share their original Yamato experiences

--Space Battleship Yamato 2199" has been rebooted as "Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love.

Habara Yes. I watched the first broadcast of the TV version (1974) in real time. I am of the "strike" generation. I was a little younger than Hideaki Anno (born in 1960).

FukuiI was in the third grade of elementary school at the time, so I was not exactly in the "strike" generation. I was watching something that the older generation was getting excited about, but I was taller.

--So, if anything, "Mobile Suit Gundam" was your direct hit.

Fukui That's right.

--I wonder if the impact of "Yamato" was one of the reasons why you decided to enter the field of animation.

Habara Before "Yamato," I was baptized by "Mazinger Z." In 1974, I was already thinking about becoming an animator, so every week I would watch the cuts on TV of Yamato coming from the back of the screen, crossing to the front, and going to the back again, while drawing a flip-flop manga.

Fukui: Perhaps the generation of Mr. Habara is the lower limit of the "Yamato" strike. The core group is around Mr. Anno, Mr. Yutaka Izubuchi (general director of "Yamato 2199"), and Mr. Ryusuke Hikawa (animation and special effects researcher). Like Gunpla, we are the generation that enjoyed the hand-me-downs that our older brothers and sisters were into.

--In the first place, the "Yamato" plastic models were a big hit, and that was the birth of Gunpla, wasn't it?

Fukui: I have fond memories of the "Yamato" plastic models. My friend's brother taught me the technique of "sticking a fire-roasted nail into a plastic model to make it look as if it had been pierced by a bullet," and I tried it myself. I opened almost all the plastic models I bought, and my parents found out and scolded me severely. Well, it was a dangerous game with fire. I heard that you used pliers to hold a plastic model between two pieces of plastic and melted it over a fire, and when the process escalated, it turned into a black mass.

Habara Moreover, it produced a lot of soot.

--Fukui: It was a bit of a near-moment.

Fukui There were a few near-miss moments. I have to add a note that good children should not copy it.
