Just Because!" What kind of work is it?

Kamoshita: A very ordinary high school student graduates in a very ordinary way? but the story spins the subtleties of emotions and thoughts of the characters as they try to take "half a step" if not "one step" forward from where they are now, while gradually being influenced by and giving to each other as a result of the main character's transfer to a new school. Without any mysterious happenings or special events, we depicted a drama within the range of what a high school student might experience as a matter of course.

─ I understand that cameras and photography play a key role in your work.

Kamoshita: One hook is that one of the characters, Ena Komiya, belongs to the photography club. I believe that a camera can capture a scene from youth or daily life in a more dramatic way, bringing to light emotions that the character was unaware of, emotions and facial expressions that are captured only in a single frame moment.
In addition to such a role of the camera, it also has a role and meaning as something that conveys the "seriousness," "earnestness," and "desperation" of the characters.

─ Why did Canon approach you?

Kamoshita & Fukunaga: Because the director had a Canon camera. During the production of the film, the director had replaced it with the PowerShot G5 X, which also appears in the film.

Fukunaga: I also have a Canon "PowerShot N2" camera for private use.
When I visited Canon for a meeting, I was told, "You have an unusual camera. I remember being told, "This is a model with an ingenious design.

Kamoshita
: We also asked for the offer because of its image as a pioneer of digital cameras, and we thought it would be appropriate as a camera to have in the winter of 2017, the setting of the work.

Kamoshita: Did you have any meaning behind the cameras held by the characters in the film?

Fukunaga
: Ena Komiya, the character holding the camera in this work, is depicted as a "trickster. In order to give weight to this character, who is the fluffiest character in the film, we wanted to give her a real-life Canon camera to visually enhance the realism of the character.

The PowerShot G5 X was selected as the camera to be used in the "Photography Club," as it is the camera that will be used to take pictures of the characters as proper works of art. I have him carry it with him at all times, even during his private time. The "EOS 7D Mark II" is not a personal possession, but is depicted as a shared possession of the club. Both cameras are meant to be carried as cameras for "expressing one's favorite moments through various subjects," rather than for taking photos to casually share one's mood and feelings with friends.

Kamoshita
: I think it makes sense that the camera was chosen not as a casual hobby for high school girls, but as something that goes beyond that, something that the girl wants to take with the camera, something she wants to continue taking pictures of, something she wants to express.

Fukunaga: What were the difficulties in designing the camera as an animation?

Fukunaga: Because the camera is an animation, it is inevitably seen as a flat surface. We had to make some simplified changes in order to make the real thing look flat, and PINE JAM, the studio, was very careful to make sure that the settings of the line drawings, which were reproduced in great detail, would not be completely blacked out when the colors were painted on. We also asked them to make the texture and weight of the camera stand out when the camera is in motion in order to give the characters a realistic feel.

─ Please tell us about your work for camera fans.

Fukunaga and Kamoshita: The film is set in "Fujisawa, Shonan," which is a picturesque place for both serious and casual camera fans, so I would be very happy if you could walk around the stage with the camera that appears in the film and take a picture for yourself.

─ ─ I am looking forward to the broadcast. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to respond.
