An interview with Daisuke Ono, who plays Susumu Ancient, has just arrived.

Space Battleship Yamato 2202: Warriors of Love" is a sequel to "Space Battleship Yamato 2199," a remake of the classic "Space Battleship Yamato" that became a hot topic. As the title suggests, the film is inspired by the 1978 animated film "Farewell Space Battleship Yamato: Warriors of Love." Three years after Yamato completes its voyage to Iskandar, the threat of the battle nation of Gatlantis, the Imperial Star, looms over a recovering Earth, and the Yamato crew faces a new voyage to confront it. The executive producer is Shoji Nishizaki, the director is Nobuyoshi Habara of "Blue Sky Fafner," the assistant director is Makoto Kobayashi of "Space Battleship Yamato: Resurrection," and the series composition and screenplay are by Harutoshi Fukui of "Mobile Suit Gundam UC. Chapter 4, "Tenmeihen," the latest in the series, is scheduled to be screened from January 27, 2018 (Saturday).

We are pleased to present an interview with Daisuke Ono, who plays the role of Susumu Ancient, from the upcoming release of the film.

─ ─ Chapter 3 was about the love between Ancient and Snow. How was it playing the role?

Ono: The third chapter was very painful. We, as performers, try to learn about the role, and after obtaining that information, we put our own feelings into the role. In other words, that first approach requires objectivity.... I couldn't help but think subjectively about this development, as if I were put in this ancient situation. If I projected myself too much there, I would become Daisuke Ono instead of Susumu Ancient, so I wanted to be in the role. I was troubled by this.
I will save only one of the three ships with many citizens on board. If you don't choose, you will all die. When confronted with that devil's choice, I think I would be unable to say anything. And yet, the ancient one said, "I will not choose. That is beyond the realm of common sense, isn't it? I was amazed at how far the human mind can go. I think Susumu Ancient is a hero. If I were the contestant, I would say, "What? I would be like, "What? I would think that logic is not applicable.
From a different perspective, it would be uncool. It's like they're saying, "I'm not going to choose," and they're being stubborn. However, I think it is ancient to be able to say that without putting on airs, and to be able to say it straight out. Other characters wouldn't or couldn't say that. He might think too much and be at a loss for words. I was in a lot of pain in that part, and I had to mentally push myself to say things that I would never say if they were true, but I still said them, even though my mouth was empty. I was acting while feeling that sensation and pain.
Mr. Fukui also told me every recording session, "In this third chapter, I'm going to make you push yourself all the way. This is an ordeal, so please get over it. So when he proposed to Yuki afterwards, I felt like I was truly rewarded for working on "Yamato" and for working with Ancient One. But the fact that this is the timing of the third chapter means that it is not the end yet. Since the time of the production announcement, Mr. Fukui had been saying, "I am going to depict love being tested," so I have been tested a lot, and I am prepared to be tested again from here on out.

─ ─ The Death Rider appeared in the last part of the third chapter, and I wonder if you and Yamadera-san have been working together in postrecording for a long time.

Ono: During the recording of " 2199," there were so many of us that we had to split the recording between the Yamato side and the Gamilas side. At that time, I was told that it would be great if we could postrecord together, and I said to Yamadera-san, "I would like to do a dialogue with you. I told him that I wanted to work with Yamadera-san, too, and we finally made it happen.

───How was your reunion with Dessler?

Ono: Even though it has been a long time since we last met, Death Rider is still the same, and I feel that he has reached heights that no one else can reach. We, the Yamato crew, were sort of being priced out, and it was like we were being upset, but we were also desperately trying to put our passion into it.
What is Deshler? He just seems so strong and mysterious that you can't see the bottom of him. It's always been that way, I don't think I can win. But this time, on the contrary, I can feel that Dessler is a person too. I think this is what I wanted to see. I can't go into details. The reason for Death Rider's profound, calm, and intelligent character was never explained, but I think the story will unravel that mystery little by little.

─ ─ In the fourth chapter, it seems that the battle against Gatlantis will be in full swing.

Ono: At last. In a sense, I think this is where Yamato really comes into its own. It is the same with the enemy, and it is also the same with myself. In the fourth chapter, the main focus is on fighting, so it's very masculine and hot. Without any exaggeration, fleet battles are cool. Also, the space cavalry is good. I hope that people who have loved "Yamato" from the past will watch it soon. I hope you will enjoy the power of the film.

───It seems that the female characters have a lot to show.

Ono: The interaction between Nagakura and Saito is great. I really like the relationship of trust between the two, as they are both gung-ho workers who shout loudly at each other. Nagakura is portrayed as a very good woman. In the first bridge, Saijo was so prominent that I thought she was the heroine, and I thought the female characters were very flamboyant. Ms. Nagakura is becoming a very good character, but as a performer of ancient times, I sometimes think, "More snow! (laughs).

─ ─ As for the male characters?

Ono: Deathler, played by Yamadera-san, is cool, mysterious, passionate, and very attractive. I can feel the heat from his performance, like a blue flame that is quietly burning. Hearing his voice, I felt once again that Yamadera-san is a truly wonderful performer.

─ If Death Rider is a blue flame, what is the ancient one?

Ono: A blazing red flame. There is definitely a difference between the two. If you come to the theater, I think you will feel that Deathler is also a person who lives in love. I believe that not only Ancient and Yamato, but also Deshler is one of the "Warriors of Love".

─ ─ Finally, do you have a message for those who are looking forward to Chapter 4?

Ono: I know that there will be things you will not understand if you start from chapter 4, but please don't worry if you are a beginner, as there is a "synopsis of the past" at the beginning of the chapter! It is depicted on a large scale that I think is best seen in the theater. I hope you can feel the great love that is in the film.
