Comics Wave Film's animated short film "Shiki Oriki" by three young directors will be released this summer! Comments from the directors have also arrived!
Comics Wave Film's new animated film "Shiki Ori Ori Ori" will be released in the summer of 2018 at Theatre Shinjuku, Cine Libre Ikebukuro, and other locations.
Shiki Ori Ori" is an animation film based on "Kimi no na wa. and "5 Centimeters per Second" directed by Makoto Shinkai. Set in three cities in China, this short animated film consists of three shorts, "Breakfast in the Sun," "A Small Fashion Show," and "Shanghai Love," which are based on the themes of "food," "clothing," and "housing.
The general director of the project is Li Haolin, the head of the Chinese animation studio Hao Liners, who admired Shinkai after watching "5 Centimeters per Second" nearly 10 years ago and continued to send enthusiastic offers to Comics Wave Film, which led to the launch of this project.
The directors of each film are: Mr. Yi Xiaoxin for "Breakfast in the Sun," a nostalgic and poetic depiction of the director's own memories; Mr. Yoshitaka Takeuchi, who has supported Shinkai's works for many years as CG chief for "Small Fashion Show"; and Mr. Li Haolin for "Shanghai Love," a tribute to "5cm per second. and "Shanghai Love," an homage to "5 Centimeters per Second," by Li Haolin.
Comments from each director have also been received, so let us introduce them as well as the synopsis of their works.
Breakfast in the Sun
A young man working in Beijing, Xiao Ming, suddenly remembers his days in his hometown in Hunan Province. The life he spent with his grandmother in the countryside, the hints of love he felt on his way to school, the events at school...beside his childhood memories, there was always the nostalgic taste of warm, hearty rice vermicelli. Then, a phone call comes in that Xiaomin's grandmother has fallen ill.
Director Yi Xiaoxin comments.
This is my first animation film as a director, having previously worked on live-action films.
The original story is a short story I wrote six years ago. At the time, I had just arrived in Beijing from the countryside and had no one to rely on, no friends, and no professional goals. One cold winter night, I was so lonely that I thought of my hometown and wrote a story about nostalgic tastes and memories of my grandmother and family. The work resonated with me and I received many proposals to make it into a movie, but when I was fortunate enough to be told about this project, I decided to make my first attempt at animation with this original story.
My only regret is that I could not let my grandmother see the work, which was dedicated to her, because she passed away two months before it was completed. However, I believe that my grandmother in heaven will smile at me.
■"A Small Fashion Show".
Theme: Clothing] Sisters in Guangzhou, Ilin, a popular model, and Lulu, a vocational school student. Having lost their parents at an early age, they live together in harmony, helping each other out. However, when things start to go wrong in their personal and professional lives, Ilin takes it out on Lulu, and a rift develops between the two, leading to a big fight.
Director Yoshitaka Takeuchi comments
In making this film, I walked around the streets of Guangzhou, China.
I walked around the streets of Guangzhou, China, to make this film, and I found a scene that seemed to me to be a picture of the changing times: brand-new, modern buildings standing side by side with old-fashioned townscapes, all changing at a very fast pace.
What are the thoughts and feelings of the people living there?
There are many different kinds of people. Some are happy, some are in pain, some are hopeful for the future, and some are just drifting through life. You can imagine many things.
This film of mine depicts the changes in the relationship between sisters with clothes as the key, and I hope that something will be left in the viewer's mind after watching it.
Shanghai Love
Theme: Residence] Shanghai in the 1990s. Limo, who lives in Sekkomon, has a faint crush on her childhood friend Xiaoyu and they spend time together all the time. However, one day, Limo leaves the city, and the distance and feelings between the two grow apart. In the present day, Limo, now a working adult, finds in his belongings a memento of Xiaoyu that he never expected to find in his belongings.
Director Li Haolin comments]
The film takes place in Shigoumen, Shanghai, which is like a "family home" for those of us who were born in the 1980s.
It is a small place, but the family is close and warm. However, as time goes by, people are disappearing and the stone gate is gradually being torn down.
In my childhood, I thought that my family would live together in that house forever, but we were soon separated, and then we were separated forever. Such feelings toward the family home are similar to those of first love.
With "Shanghai Love," I hope to deliver these feelings to you through the language of animation.
