Director Mamoru Hosoda's latest film in three years, "Mirai no Mirai," to be released on Friday, July 20, 2018, and the voice cast for the film's main characters has been announced.

The film is the latest in a long line of blockbuster animated films, including "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time," "Summer Wars," "Wolf Children: Rain and Snow," and 2015's "Bakemono no Ko," which drew a huge response for its depiction of the world of humans and beasts. Mamoru Hosoda, who has created one blockbuster animation film after another and is now attracting the most attention in Japan and abroad, will release his new film "Mirai no Mirai" on July 20, 2018 (Friday).
Animation Film Screening Schedule

Summer Wars" depicts a summer of interaction between a high school student and a large family in the countryside, and "Wolf Children: Rain and Snow" depicts the independence of two children and the mother who raises them. The previous "Bakemono no ko" depicted the adventures of a lone boy and his bond with a "monster" who becomes his master. Universal themes that everyone can relate to have been projected onto the screen, sometimes realistically, sometimes fantastically and colorfully.

In "Mirai no Mirai," his first new film in three years, Director Hosoda has written the original story and screenplay himself, as he did in the previous film. The main character, a pampered 4-year-old boy named Kun-chan, meets his younger sister Mirai, who has come from the future, and grows up through a series of first-time experiences.

The voice cast for the main characters of the film has been determined and announced.
The main character, Kun-chan, a pampered 4-year-old boy, will be played by Moeka Kamihiraishi, an up-and-coming young actress who won the Grand Prix at the 7th "Toho Cinderella" audition and is active in movies, musicals and commercials. This will be her third Hosoda film.

Kun-chan and Mirai-chan's parents are: Gen Hoshino, an actor, musician, and writer active in a variety of genres, plays the father; Kumiko Aso, an actress and mother of two, plays the mother; Mitsuo Yoshihara, active in numerous stage performances and musicals, plays the mysterious man Kun-chan meets; and Hana Kuroki, who has appeared in several movies and dramas, plays Kun-chan's grandmother. The role of Kun-chan's grandmother will be played by actress Miyazaki Yoshiko, who is active not only in movies and TV dramas but also in variety shows, and the role of grandpa will be played by actor Yakusho Koji, who played Kumatoru in "Bakemono no ko".

This will be Kami Shiraishi's first attempt at voice acting in a movie. She initially auditioned for the role of Mirai-chan, but was selected for the role of Kun-chan and landed her first starring role in a movie. While struggling with the voice of a 4-year-old boy, Kamihiraishi played the role of Kun-chan with her own spontaneous voice while engaging in friendly competition with the senior cast members who did the dubbing together.
Kuroki, who co-starred in the film, commented, "He has a wonderful, clear and lively voice. It's perfect and very cute. Kuroki also praised her voice, saying, "It's very clear and very lively. The film has met director Hosoda's expectations.

In the second trailer, we see the parents struggling to raise their younger sister Mirai, and Kun-chan is asked in a train station in the near future, "So what you have lost is yourself. The film depicts the timeless story of Kun-chan's adventures and her family with new scenes.

The trailer will be screened in theaters nationwide from April 13 (Fri.).

The following are comments from the cast members.

Moka Kamihiraishi (playing the role of Kun-chan)

I am very happy to be able to appear in a film directed by Hosoda, which I have been watching at the theater every time the latest film is released. I was surprised when the director stopped me on my way home from an audition for the role of Mirai-chan and asked me to play the role of a 4-year-old boy. After I was chosen to play the role of Kun-chan, I actually played and talked with a 4-year-old boy at a daycare center, which reminded me of when I was 4 years old. It was a very difficult role to play, but I enjoyed the challenge even as I groped my way through it. Kun-chan is so lovable that I could watch him all the time and never get tired of him. Mirai no Mirai" is a work in which I strongly feel Director Hosoda's love. I want to receive that love and be present as Kun-chan."

■Hana Kuroki (Mirai-chan)
Director Hosoda's works are filled with grandeur and courage, even though they depict familiar events in a subtle way. I am very happy to be able to work with the director again on this film, and I was really looking forward to it because it is not often that a film with a 4-year-old child as the main character is made. I myself have an older sister and a younger brother, so I could relate to Kun-chan's feelings when she had a younger sister. It's funny to see Kun-chan grow up little by little, and you can feel a lot of love and bonding through her adventures."

Minamoto Hoshino (Father)

I am very happy to be invited to the world of director Hosoda. I play a father who struggles to grow up while working hard to raise his child and work. When I first saw the video, I was rolling my eyes at how cute Kun-chan and baby Mirai were every step of the way. The recording was so peaceful that it felt like we were all raising a single living thing with great care. I am now looking forward to the day when the film will be released to the public.

Kumiko Aso (mother)

I have been a fan of Hosoda's works since I saw "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Kun-chan's family is very similar to my own family, so I felt very close to them. The mother I play in the movie is troubled by the fact that Kun-chan is turning into a baby after Mirai's birth, but I had the same problem myself, so I felt an outpouring of sympathy. Children grow only a little at a time, but this is a wonderful work that depicts the happiness of seeing that "little" moment.
