You Still Don't Know Gunma" Episode 7 Thoughts: What is the real horror of "Karakaze," a specialty of Gunma's winter season?

The short anime "You Still Don't Know Gunma" started this April.
Based on a comic serialized on the web comic distribution site "Kurage Bunch," it is a comedy in which "Gunma" (Gunma Prefecture/people in Gunma Prefecture), which is often disparaged on the Internet, is deformed with exaggerated action scenes with a lot of tension.


This work is so local that only the local commercial TV station, Gunma Television (Gunma Television), broadcasts it, which is a crying shame. However, it is also available on Animax and GYAO! The author, a native of Gunma, will delve into the details of such a super-local work with love and commentary.


Last time, I wrote about episode 4, and this time we are suddenly on episode 7, so there are two episodes left open, but I don't care about the details (laughs). To give a brief synopsis of episodes 5 and 6, the main character, Nori Kozuki (CV: Takehito Kajiwara), is finally accepted by his classmates, but is told by "JKJ" (Jomo Karuta Jugend ) led by Kyo Shinooka (CV: Aya Uchida), the only one in red, that he cannot respond to keywords in the Jomo Karuta The "JKJ" (Jomo Karuta Jugent), led by Kyo Shinooka (CV: Aya Uchida), is stuffed for not being able to respond to keywords in Jomo Karuta. Now, in episode 7, which is the second part of the one-cool episode, the case from episode 6 has been resolved once and for all, and Kamizuki seems to have been fully accepted as a high school student in Gumma. He seems to be enjoying his Gumma life to the fullest. However, there is something that has been troubling him. It was the "karakaze, " a specialty of Gumma. This wind is a major obstacle on the way to and from school by bicycle, but in Kamizuki's case, it is not necessarily a bad thing, as he faces a headwind on the way to school (i.e., heading north) and a tailwind on the way back (i.e., heading south). On such an "easy" way out of school, Kamizuki rides his bicycle without pedaling into a tailwind, but on a bridge where a strong wind blows, he meets a boy who is pedaling his bicycle frantically into the headwind. The boy is unable to move forward any further and is reduced to tears, and this reminds him once again of the harshness of nature in Gunma (not a place for human habitation!). ).


Although the harshness of the "Karakaze" is deformed in this film, it is almost a fact from the real Gumma's point of view (laugh). The dry, strong winds that blow from the northwest every day in winter are called "kara-kaze" in Gumma, and the intensity of these winds may not be readily apparent to those who have not experienced them. As the boy says in the film, "I can't pedal any further forward," the wind is so strong that it is sometimes difficult to pedal the bicycle forward, and it requires advanced driving techniques to pedal upwind while dodging the wind in a zigzag direction. Therefore, people from Gumma are skilled in handling bicycles (I think).


Also, the "truth of Gumma," which appears in the book, "In winter, bicycles parked on the road usually fall over. This is also true. The wind is so strong that bicycles are usually knocked over in places where there is no shelter from the wind, or even if there was a shelter from the wind. In addition, girls' school uniform skirts are always rolled up even if they are held down, so by default, junior high and high school girls in Gumma wear their gym jerseys under their skirts. Because of the circumstances that these girls have to pedal their bicycles so hard in such strong winds, their legs, especially their thighs, are inevitably trained and become thicker. This is the reason why the girls in Gumma are said to have thick legs! Look at them with kind eyes! (*This is just a guess.)


Incidentally, in the case of the author, the nearest junior high school is almost 4 kilometers away, and the geographical situation is such that she heads almost straight south from her home, so she was greatly affected by this "karakaze. In winter, the wind usually picks up in the evening, and in the morning, the wind is not blowing as hard, so we rarely benefit from a tailwind like the one we had in Kozuki. However, when I return home by bicycle, dragging my exhausted body from club activities, a 100% strong wind is waiting for me, and I have to pedal my bicycle against the strong wind for nearly four kilometers along the unobstructed road in the middle of rice paddies. So I understand the feelings of the boy in this film very well. I can't talk about it without tearing up!
