High School Professional Gamers Sweep First and Second Places! eSports Tournament "Puyo Puyo Championship" June 2018 Report

The June 2018 edition of the eSports professional tournament "Puyo Puyo Championship" was held at Asakusabashi Hulic Hall (Taito-ku, Tokyo) on June 3 (Sun.) from 19:00.

The "PuyoPuyo Championship" is an official Sega e-sports tournament (with a prize money of 300,000 yen) for players who have acquired a Japan e-sports professional license for the popular action puzzle game "PuyoPuyo" series. The tournament consisted of 16 players, including 13 professional players and three new professional players, Tobikichu, Zairo, and Piponia, who won the "Puyo Puyo Cup" mixed tournament for professional and general players in June 2018, which was held from 3:00 p.m. on the day.

In the exhibition match held before the tournament, professional players played a 2 vs. 2 team game. In the "Puyoteto Match," which followed the "Puyopuyo Match," the players showed that "Puyopuyo is not the only game I'm good at," by performing a Tetris (4-step erase) early in the game, and by performing a series of "T spins," in which a T-shaped Tetrimino (block) is twisted between the gaps between the blocks. I'm good at more than just Puyo Puyo! He showed off his superb play, and the audience was very much excited.
