I longed to be a female character who used a bow and arrow! Lynn, who plays the heroine Teruhi in the summer anime "Angolmore Genkou Gassenki," talks about the highlights of the work!
An interview with Lynn, who plays Teruhi, the heroine of the summer anime "Angolmore Genkou Gassenki," which will start airing in July!
Angolmore Genkou Gassenki" is a full-scale historical epic serialized by Nanahiko Tagagi in the web comic service "ComicWalker" (KADOKAWA). It is an authentic historical epic that depicts from a novel perspective the great incident "Genko" that shook medieval Japan, in which Kutsui Xunzaburo, a Kamakura samurai sent to Tsushima as a criminal, crosses blades with the Mongolian army to defend Tsushima, the furthest land of Sotto. Directed by Takayuki Kuriyama, assistant director Kumiko Habara, series composition by Shogo Yasukawa, character design and chief animation director Masayori Komine, and animation production by NAZ.
Lynn, who plays Teruhi, the heroine of the film and the daughter of Sosukenokuni, the head of Tsushima, talked about the appeal of the character Teruhi, the scene at the recording studio where many talented male voice actors were on hand, and the highlights of the film.
This interview is sure to heighten your anticipation for the powerful historical picture scroll that is finally about to begin!
This is the work I have been waiting for!
--Lynn: First of all, what was your impression when you read the original comic?
Lynn I thought it was interesting that you put the spotlight on the Genko pirates, and I enjoyed reading the passionate human drama depicted in the events of just a few days, wondering what would happen to them.
I am glad to know that this kind of event really happened, and it made me think about many things, such as the fact that we have peace today because of those who fought.
--Lynn I am glad to know that the event of "Genko" itself is taught in school, but we are not told in such detail what really took place.
Lynn It would be easier to learn if the book is drawn in manga form. I would love to see it in school libraries (laughs).
--Lynn What kind of character is Teruhi, who you play?
Lynn: Teruhi is a kind woman who doesn't really want to fight and doesn't want anyone to die. She has a weakness that makes her look away from the painful reality, but when she sees the inevitable reality and hears Xunzaburo's words, "Are you ready for this?", she gets inspired and tries to be strong in order to protect everyone, I think she is a very attractive character.
She lost many people she cared about and would normally have run away, but she has the strength to tell herself that she must do her best for the sake of the islanders.
--What did you think when you were chosen to play Teruhi?
Lynn: I love "Inuyasha" and that's how I got into voice acting. That's one of the genres I've always wanted to play, so I was really excited. Moreover, a female character like Teruhi, who uses a bow and arrow, is exactly the kind of character I have always wanted to play, so I am very happy to be able to play her.
-- So, when you audition, please contact me at .......
Lynn: No matter what! There was a part of me that was like. It finally came! This is the work I've been waiting for! I thought. So I hope that Teruhi will represent the character I play.
--Lynn: Is there anything you are conscious of or careful about when you play the role?
Lynn: Since she is a princess, I try to express her elegance and interest in every word I say. When Teruhi decides to face reality, I clench my fists and say to myself, "I have to do my best! I am having a lot of fun playing the role.
I think I am having a lot of fun in the role.
--Lynn How do you feel about the atmosphere in the recording studio?
Lynn: It's very friendly. Before the recording starts, we usually check with the sound director how to read the words and how to accentuate the words. When recording begins, there is a sense of urgency, but during breaks, everyone is chatting and laughing together, making it a warm and fun place to work.
--Lynn: There are a lot of difficult words and kanji in the script, aren't there?
Lynn That's right. There are many difficult phrases and words that we would not use in our daily lives, but we have to make sure that they are used in their everyday language without any sense of discomfort. I have to say that it was a challenge for me to perform the role, because I had to create a sense of tension.
--What kind of acting guidance did you receive from the director and sound director?
Lynn: For Teruhi, we discussed that when she first appears as a princess, she should be glamorous, but when she makes up her mind and starts fighting, she should be more resilient. We cannot fully understand the feelings of the people of this time period, but while we can respect them, the basic way they express their emotions is very easy to understand, so I think I am having a lot of fun in my role.
--Lynn What is your impression of Tomoki Ono's performance as the main character, Xunzaburo, as a co-star?
Lynn: Mr. Ono himself wanted to play the role so much that he thought, "If not me, who would play this character? I really felt that way. I think he has a cool, unpretentious, masculine quality. When he calls out to the others in the battle scene, he does not intend to aggressively lead them, but his words resonate with them because they come from the inside and are his true feelings. I think that's what I like about him.
--Lynn What other interactions with your co-stars left a lasting impression on you?
Lynn: Teruhi interacts with Xunzaburo the most, but she also shows her maidenly side to him in some parts, which I think is a comforting scene amidst the tension of the production. In such scenes, I sometimes direct her to be more cute.
I think that when she is not fighting, her true self, or rather, her pure, young self, comes out. When she is fighting, I think she is trying her best to be strong, so I am conscious of the distinction between the two roles.
--What do you think when you see the performances of the senior cast members?
Lynn: Everyone's acting is so passionate, and they are fighting for their lives, so you can really feel their souls in their performances. It is an honor to be able to hear them up close.
Especially in the battle scenes, everyone puts a lot of effort into their performance, and some of them even move their bodies spontaneously, which shows their passion.
I want people to know more about the pirates and Tsushima through this film.
--Please tell us about the highlights of this film.
Lynn The visuals are just amazing! The movements are detailed and there is a kind of picture scroll-like filter applied to the entire film. When I saw the completed first episode, I was surprised or impressed. I can't wait for everyone to see it.
Also, the realism of the battle scenes! The sound of swords clashing, the movement of swords, and the way sparks were scattered was amazingly depicted, and I was really engrossed in the scenes. There are many powerful scenes.
In the story, all the Ryujin are halfway forced to participate in the battle, but each of them has a past, and the drama of how they came to be here and how they feel about fighting is depicted in the story. All of the characters have their own emotions, so I think the human drama is the highlight of the story.
--Do you have a favorite character?
Lynn Everyone is good. The characters have strong personalities. I think the one that everyone is interested in at first is Onigomaru, but personally, I think it's Zhang Meifuku. I like the little old man because he is cute, like a mascot character.
--By the way, this work is set in Tsushima. Have you ever been there?
Lynn Yes. I went there for the trailer filming. It is a very beautiful place, full of nature, the fish is delicious, and the islanders are very kind. I climbed the mountain where the ruins of Kanada Castle are located, which was very difficult due to its steep slopes. It was great to be able to experience such things firsthand.
--Lynn: You are very local, holding a screening event in Tsushima on June 30, aren't you?
Lynn That's right. The mayor of Tsushima was there when we recorded the first episode, and he was really enthusiastic! He was very enthusiastic about the project, which made us tense as well.
He said that he wanted people to know more about the pirates and Tsushima through this work, so we hope we can help him in this endeavor.
--Please give us your comments to our readers.
Lynn: First of all, I thought the story was genuinely interesting, and I hope that many people will see it as a visual work. I also hope that many people will be interested in the history of the Japanese invasion of Tsushima and visit Tsushima because of this film, which I think will make the local people happy and the people who fought there will be rewarded. I, myself, want to tell people that historical works are so interesting! Even if you think it is not your cup of tea, if you watch it without any preconceptions, you will definitely want to watch all the episodes! Please watch it!
--Thank you very much!
