This summer's goal is "to be a rear ender"! The heart-warming 1st single "I love you even on the worst day" to color the hot summer Interview with Yuu Serizawa!
Yu Serizawa, a voice actress and a member of i☆Ris, released her long-awaited first single "I love you even on the worst day. was released on July 25.
This song is a heart-warming love song which has already been aired as the ED theme of summer anime "Isekai Maou to Sumo Shoujo no Slave Majutsu". Serizawa is also active as a member of the voice actress unit "i☆Ris," but in this single, she sings about a life-size girl she has never shown before.
We asked Ms. Serizawa, who has broken new ground by collaborating with HoneyWorks, a popular creative unit that has released numerous love songs, about her thoughts on this song.
It is both an anime song and a Yuu Serizawa song
--Do you remember how you felt when you first heard that you were going to release a single?
Yuu Serizawa (Serizawa) When I first heard that we were going to release a single as a tie-in for the ED theme of an anime, I thought, "Oh, my dream come true. Anime tie-ins are a big deal in my mind, and there are so many anime OPs and EDs in the songs I like. So I felt it was a big deal, and I was grateful for the opportunity.
--I love you even on the worst day. What was your impression of the song when you first heard it?
Serizawa: I thought HoneyWorks was a genius. When we decided who to ask to write the music for this project, I suggested that we ask HoneyWorks, and the staff also agreed that it would be good, so I asked them to write it for us.
I thought I was just asking for a no-brainer, but I was very happy to hear that they said yes! And I thought to myself, "This is really Genius that he would write such a wonderful song for us!
--I was so happy that they said yes!
Serizawa: I thought it would be better to convey my enthusiasm, so I sent a long message to HoneyWorks saying, "This is the kind of music I want.
I wanted a song that was in line with the work, and one that would be applicable to Yuu Serizawa herself. I also wanted them to write a song that would make my character Sierra's heart swoon, and since I myself am an idol, I knew I had to make my fans swoon. I thought they were really great.
--The sigh of "huh" in the first verse and the whispering "This is love" in the second verse really made me feel the heart beat. How did you create these parts of the song?
Serizawa: There are nuanced ideas that I created and sent out from within myself, and there are also parts that Gom-san (in charge of music composition and arrangement for HoneyWorks) directed me in detail. The "this" in "This is love," is the same as the momentum of the previous songs, but Gom's direction was to have me sing just the one word, "this is love," in a very sad way.
--It's like a moment of strength, but with a hint of weakness. I think this is the result of Serizawa's wide range of expressive ability. What are some of the other points that you find compelling when you sing the song?
Serizawa: The flow of the D melody from "I love you" to "What's the answer? (YES)" in the D melody. The phrase from the whispered "I love you" to "It's my first love" doesn't sound so different from the other notes on the recording, but when I was recording it, I sang it in a mumbled whisper. But when I was recording it, I sang it in a mumbled voice. To balance it out with the other phrases, I had the mixer make it louder. I love this part because it shows the straightforwardness and purity of a girl who is confused by her first love, but is thinking, "Is this what love is all about?
--I feel that Mr. Serizawa and HoneyWorks brought out the best in each other. Are your ideas incorporated into the lyrics as well?
Serizawa: I wanted a song about love, and since Sierra, the girl I play, is a straightforward girl, I wanted the lyrics to be straightforward without thinking too much. Also, the two lines of English lyrics in the song "Tanataro" by HoneyWorks are very comfortable to listen to and stay in my head, so I wanted to have English lyrics that would be addictive.
Also, "Isekai Maou to Summon Girl no Slave Majutsu" is a work about a different world, so from our point of view, it's a "what if" world. But the girls who live in that other world would also think "what if this were the case" and think "what if this were the case", so I asked them to include an element of a different world within a different world. I think that's why they added the phrase "If I were born again, I'd still love you.
--I think that's how they came up with the phrase "If I were reborn again, I would still love you".
Serizawa: I wanted to make an ED theme that was in line with the work. I wanted the song to be an anime song.
--By the way, the main character in this song is a very maidenly girl.
Serizawa: I also become like this. That's why the Serizawa element is also very strong in this song. When I really like someone, I think about him or her when I am not at work, or I listen to love songs all the time. It makes me happy (laughs).
So, it's not like I'm in love right now, but I sang the song while remembering and imagining how it feels to be in love.
--I was trying to imagine what it would be like to be in love, and I sang the song while thinking about it.
Serizawa: I am glad that the music video conveys that image. In the past music videos, "Voice for YOU!" is a song about making dreams come true, and "PRINCESS POLICY" is a song about looking only at me! is a song about Yuu Serizawa's character. So I wanted to show the "idol me" and the "me that everyone knows" without betraying their expectations, so I shot costumes and dance scenes that would make people understand "this is what Yuu Serizawa is like". This time, rather than trying to let people get to know the idol Yuu Serizawa, I wanted to give a life-size performance of a girl who is in love.
--I think I gave the impression that I was relaxed in a good way. Personally, I thought the navy blue one-piece dress was very mature and lovely.
Serizawa That's the dress with the shoulders showing. That is the dress for a date. The story of the music video is about the girl's power up from one week before the date to just before the date with her boyfriend, so the navy blue dress is the outfit of choice.
I hope the fans will be pleased with the music video. It has a completely different atmosphere from my previous music videos, so I think it will be fun for newcomers to see it and for those who have been supporting me for a long time to see me in a different light!
I would like to discover the Yuu Serizawa I don't know!
--The coupling song "Kami x Taiyo x Summer Party" is a fun and summery song, was the recording process like that?
Serizawa: We had fun playing around with the lyrics, and I really felt HoneyWorks' playful spirit in the lyrics.
--The way you sing and pronounce the words, it's quite playful, isn't it?
Serizawa Yes, I sang "Kami x Taiyo" for the first verse and "Shio x Taiyo" for the second verse (laughs). I hope everyone will look at the lyric card before listening to the song and enjoy the play on words.
--What kind of order did you give to this song?
Serizawa Since it is a summer single, I wanted an up-tempo song, and since the first song has a strong romantic element, I told them that I wanted a song that would be applicable to everyone and that anyone could enjoy listening to.
--What is the point of this song?
Serizawa: There is a play on the lyrics, but I would venture to say it's the contrast with the first song, "Even on my worst day, I love you. In the first song, he says "I love you" many times, but in this song, he says "I only say 'I love you' once" and I thought "He said it so many times before! I was saying it a lot earlier! That's the point of Gom's playfulness, or rather, the interesting aspect of the song.
--This single was made in collaboration with HoneyWorks, wasn't it?
Serizawa That's right. I thought that if I said, "I don't care what kind of song it is," it wouldn't convey my enthusiasm very well, so I tried to convey the image I had in my mind as much as possible, and with HoneyWorks' ideas, I think we were able to create something very good.
--I think it was great that the first single turned out to be such a well-crafted one, wasn't it?
Serizawa It really is. I wanted to show my fans for the first time that I am serious about my solo activities, not just "I'm a member of a group, but I've released a solo album too! I wanted my fans and newcomers alike to know that I was serious about my solo activities. That's why I was really into it, and I think it's a miracle that I was able to ask HoneyWorks to do it this time.
--How do you want to develop your solo activities in the future?
Serizawa: In i☆Ris, we ask various creators for "cool songs" for cool anime tie-ups, and then we choose "this song! I try to choose the song first. However, for my solo, I would like to work with someone who is willing to create as much as possible. I would like to work with someone who has an idea that it would be interesting to have Yu Serizawa do something like this. I would like to work with someone who has an idea that would be interesting to have Yu Serizawa do something like this.
--Do you want to work with someone who can make the most of your talent?
Serizawa I think I am the type of person who can be anything, and I think I can create a variety of images. I like cool, cute, MC, voice actor, idol, and so on. I can enjoy whatever I do, and I can digest it or make it my own way. I would like to work with people who have ideas. Maybe you will find a Yu Serizawa that no one has ever known before! To be honest, there are parts of me that I don't even know what I am, so I have high expectations for the future.
--What kind of song would you like to sing, for example?
Serizawa Well, we don't sing many radio wave songs with a bit of energy in i☆Ris, and on the other hand, I think it would be interesting to sing with a band sound. I think it is because I am alone that I am able to completely immerse myself in the band's colors.
--So, if you are a creator who reads this interview and says, "I am the one! I would like to hear from any creators who read this interview and say, "I am the one!
Serizawa Please contact us at avex! (Laughs)
--Lastly, I know you have a very busy schedule this summer with overseas live performances and fan meetings, but what kind of summer do you want to enjoy in between those events?
Serizawa: This year I've reached a point where I think it's wonderful to be rear-ended! The other day, I had a takopa (takoyaki party) with friends while watching soccer. That was fun. Rear-enrichment, right? (Laughs)
I used to think "Hmmm," or "What a waste," but now I realize that what is fun for everyone is fun for everyone else, so I want to go to the pool this year. I already bought my swimsuit. All I have to do now is go! My goal for this summer is to "imitate a real person!
--You don't usually do anything that would make you feel like you're in the real world?
Serizawa: Not at all. Until recently, I really disliked doing that kind of thing. I was envious of the girls who were doing well on "Tik Tok" (a community app where users can share 15-second videos of themselves performing actions to music) and I thought it was so cool. I thought they were different from me (laughs), but the other day a friend of mine came to stay at my house and I thought it was genuinely fun. So I decided to try imitating the real people and not just eating them.
--I thought I'd try to imitate the rear end, and not just eat it, but also discover something new.
Serizawa That's right. I feel like I have to try things that I have never tried before. I haven't been to the pool with friends since my first year of high school, so I hope I can go. I would like to go with Misae Komori and Kanako Takatsuki!
--I'll let you know how it goes at the next interview (laughs). Thank you very much!
