Exclusive Interview] How has the new Corona changed the scene of e-sports competitions? Behind-the-scenes look at the "TEPPEN Japan Ambassador Grand Prix 2020

The "Japan Ambassador Grand Prix 2020" was the first large-scale remote competition since the launch of the TEPPEN service. As the impact of the spread of the new coronavirus continues on a global scale, the e-sports industry is increasingly using remote distribution as a new tournament format, and "TEPPEN" took a similar step this time. But what is the difference between a tournament held at a real event and a remote tournament?

The "Japan Ambassador Grand Prix 2020," which was broadcast on August 30, 2020, used pre-recorded and edited footage. The games were conducted using the "Discord" communication application, which was used to communicate with the participating athletes. A total of only four people were in charge of the tournament, including the notification of regulations, communication with the players, and management of the players.

The tournament organizer said, "When the time came, we contacted the players and asked them to gather in the chat room, where we announced the pairings. In addition, while in normal tournaments, players are asked to use special terminals prepared for the tournament, for this tournament only, players were asked to participate using the terminals they normally use, which "placed a burden on us," he said.

As for the matches, two dedicated match rooms were created for the matches, where the players could play at the same time. The format for the "TEPPEN" tournament was to have three decks, with two decks selected for the match, but the deck to be used for the match was made public by direct mail to the management, and after confirmation, the management showed both sides.

Also, due to the nature of "TEPPEN" as a card game, it is necessary to show the operation of the cards in the player's hand as a video, and unlike FPS and fighting games, it is difficult to do so on a single screen. In order to solve this problem, each player used "TwitCasting" to distribute their videos at this year's tournament. These videos were then edited and combined to create a screen for the tournament.

Of course, equipment problems were also anticipated. The person in charge said , "The game has a replay function, so even if TwitCasting was cut off, we were able to have the game continue and, in the worst case, have the replay video sent to us for recording.

As for future official tournaments, we would like to improve them while making use of our experience in running this event,
