On October 27, 2020, "Netflix Anime Festival 2020 - The Future of Anime with You" was held at EX THEATER ROPPONGI.

This event consisted of two parts: Part 1, "Netflix Anime Lineup Presentation," which featured talk sessions and information on new anime from the video distribution service Netflix, which celebrated the 5th anniversary of its launch in Japan in September 2020; and a festival event where voice actors and singers from anime distributed by Netflix gathered under one roof. The first speaker was Netflix Anime Chief Producer, Mr. Hiroki Sakurai.

Mr. Sakurai started his one-man animation department with the idea that "Japanese animation still has potential and can be expanded to the world," but now he has a team of 11 people working daily to find out what works should be made on Netflix.

Looking back on Netflix's past initiatives in Japan, he said, "We have been aiming to create a platform where anime fans from around the world can gather." He also spoke of the future goal of Netflix as "a truly global platform based in Tokyo, aiming for diverse expressions by creators from around the world.

One of the most impressive topics was the recent increase in the number of Japanese animations ranking high in the Top 10 viewership by country/region worldwide.

Taking into account the fact that the number of households watching anime is increasing around the world at a rate of 50% every year, he spoke of his ambition for the anime business, saying that his mission is to "create works for not only Japan, but also for Asia and the rest of the world.

After highlighting the fact that anime from Japan is being delivered to the world through Netflix, information on new anime scheduled to be distributed in the future was announced at once.

The main MC, announcer Naoki Yoshida (Nippon Broadcasting System, Inc.), and anime-loving actress Rio Uchida appeared on stage. They introduced all 16 works with high-spirited talk as only anime fans can.

Of the 16 titles, the first half of the program featured a wide variety of titles that seemed to embody the "global platform.

Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness.

Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi of Capcom, who has created numerous "Resident Evil" series, participated in the production and supervision of the original story. TMS Entertainment, which has produced various animation works, and Quebico, led by Yoshi Miyamoto, who served as production producer for the CG movie "Resident Evil: Vendetta," will be in charge of full 3DCG animation production.

─ ─ How did you feel when you were chosen for the role and what was your impression when you read the script?

I was instantly captivated by the sight of a single human being living with a robot.

On the day of my first postrecording, I was invited to a tentative recording for the purpose of making a video. Since there was no timing for me to say, "I got the part," I sometimes wondered if one day it might be played by someone else. I was happy that I was chosen for the role, and most of all, I was happy that the people who created the film were pleased with it.

─ A message to your fans in Japan and abroad

Although it is a science fiction work, it is filled with many feelings that cannot be described in scientific terms.

There may be a world like this somewhere in the not-too-distant future. At such a time, what should "people" essentially be like? What is it that we really want to value for ourselves? This work gives us a chance to think again.
