Become the legendary "Meijin" of legendary tales and vanquish your deformed foes. A review of the "Legends" multiplayer content for "Ghost of Tsushima"!

Ghost of Tsushima, the open-world period action adventure on PS4 for PlayStation®4, received a major free update on October 17, 2020. The multiplayer content "Legends ( 冥人奇譚)" can now be played. In this issue, we present a play review of "Kitan" and "Nine Deaths" that can be played in this content!

The "Pluto Kitan" is an independent content and has no direct connection to the main story featuring Jin Sakai and Kotun Haan. It is based on the "Four Underworlders" in "The Legend of the Underworlders," and players fight various enemies through the legend told by a storyteller named Gyozen.

The four Underworlders are divided into the Samurai, who specialize in melee combat, the Archer, who excels at long-range attacks with a bow, the Prisoner, who is skilled at supporting his allies, and the Assassin, who is good at undercover work and infiltration. At the beginning of the game, you can choose one of your favorite "Meijin," but the others will be unlocked later by raising their "rank" (like levels). The easiest to handle are the samurai and the assassin. Both specialize in attacks. The samurai has the "Hachiman's Wrath," a series of high-speed slashes, and the "Blood-Sucking Sword," a special technique that removes strength from the enemy and heals him, while the assassin has the "Dark Crow," which can kill an enemy with a single blow, and the "Kamikakushi," which hides himself and his companions from view.

Each of the underworlders has different depths and special skills, so it is important to share the roles with your companions.

The bowman can attack enemies from a distance, but must aim for the head to inflict heavy damage, and the skill required is somewhat high. The prisoners have a powerful "breath of Izanami," which revives allies, but it is useless if the prisoners themselves fall, so they must be very careful. If you have no particular preference, you should first choose a samurai or an assassin.

In the tutorial, you will learn the basic combat skills of "Ghost of Tsushima. If it has been a while since you last played the main game, don't worry.

Kitan Mode Recreates the Legend of the Underworld

One of the major elements of this content is the "Kitan" mode. This mode is designed for two players, with difficulty levels of "Red Copper," "Platinum," and "Gold" (difficult from left to right). The game is just as challenging as the main game, which is severely difficult, with tension-filled sword fights that are reminiscent of period dramas.

The players regain strength by beating drums or picking up offerings in the vicinity. In the case of drums, all allies in the area of effect can be healed.

Most of the enemies are Mongols, but demons, tengu, and other monsters also appear. There are also many elements of Japanese mythology, such as Amaterasu Omikami and Tsukuyomi, and the stage is characterized by a strong sense of horror and fantasy, with floating corpses and thick, vascular-like tubes. It also incorporates an attribute called "divinity" and enemies that rapidly restore the health of their companions. Although the basic combat, such as channeling or repelling an opponent's attack, or using energy to perform moves, is the same as in the main game, the stages with fantasy elements are fresh and new. Rather than playing the additional content for "Ghost of Tsushima," it feels like playing another title based on "Ghost of Tsushima. Incidentally, the chapters that can be tackled in "Kitan" are compact enough to be finished in around 20 minutes.

In a two-player game, it can be a bit tedious to play in a random match to avoid bothering your opponent, but even if you fall down, you can be revived by your teammates, and since the content has only been released for a short time, now is the time to be proactive. Alternatively, you may want to hone your skills in the main game or get used to playing in the "Nine Deaths" mode, which allows four players to play together.

The Nine Deaths mode, in which four players can fight a large enemy army.

The "Nine Deaths" mode is a tower defense-like mode in which players defend their base against the onrushing enemy hordes. The gauge increases when the enemy is within the circle of your base, and when it is full, the base is occupied; if all three bases are overrun, you lose. In contrast to "Kitan," which was characterized by its ease of use, this mode is based on taking your time and playing the game carefully.

Also, this mode allows cooperative play by up to four players, and like "Kitan," three difficulty levels are available. The overall difficulty is more difficult than "Kitan" because it is a series of battles. The "Golden" difficulty level can take up to an hour to clear the game after one attempt.

Each time a base is seized, the maximum strength of all players is reduced. The challenge is to protect all the bases.

The three bases are separated from each other, and if you go to intercept enemy reinforcements as they arrive, they will already be inside your camp. Because of the large number of enemies, if one of the players is defeated, he or she may be pushed out. Coordination is the key, so it is ideal to form a party in advance. If you use the matchmaking function, it is recommended that you go to a base where there are no allies, or that you fight together with a friend who is low on health.

However, as far as the author was concerned, there were few cases of failure even when challenging with randomly selected companions. At this point, I have no experience with difficulty levels higher than platinum, so it may be a different story when it becomes more difficult.

If you prepare "kodama," which are obtained by annihilating the enemies who attack you, for Buddha, you can use them once to heal your allies or set enemies on fire. If the player defeats the enemy several times, he or she can use it again.

It is a minor performance, but it is also nice to hear Gyozen's narration each time the player performs an action such as slaying an enemy or acquiring a desired object. When fighting an enemy, hearing "Meijin stroked and slashed" or "The number of enemies decreased quickly" will boost morale and make the player feel more like a Meijin.

Since four players cooperate, the challenge is easier than in "Kitan," which is designed for two players. If you are not comfortable playing with two players, this is a good way to get used to it.

Collecting Armor to Strengthen the Underworld

As you complete the "Kitan" and "Nine Deaths," you will obtain weapons such as swords, bows, and dark weapons. Equipping them will increase the chi of the target. The more the chi value increases, the stronger the target's attack and defense will be. This is the "level" of the person, and in order to strengthen the person, you must equip him with better armor and increase his "chi". There are different rarity levels for different types of armor, in order of rarity: ordinary, good, excellent, superb, and divine. What you get after clearing each stage depends on your luck. The real thrill of the game is to play around with excitement to see what kind of armor you can get.

In addition, the weapons have "special effects" and "special skills" attached to them. These can be changed at random using the "Improve" function. If you don't like what you have changed, you can always change it again. This is a truly challenging element of the game that allows the player to examine the gems he has acquired until he is satisfied with them. However, only one of the "special effects" and "special skills" of the armor can be improved. To improve the others, you must reset the parts that have already been modified. To improve, you need "honor" and "spirit," which can be obtained by playing "Kitan" and "Nine Deaths." Currently, the amount of "honor" you can obtain is quite small compared to the amount you spend, and I personally would like to see this improved.

In addition, the rarity of the armor that appears at higher difficulty levels, such as platinum and gold, is also better. However, if you challenge the "Meijin Kitan" in its initial state, you will at best be beaten back, so let's start with the Red Copper and gradually work our way up to the harder difficulties.

Despite being a free update, "Meijin Kitan" is rich in content and replayability. It is also tremendously well-crafted, with a dedicated opening movie, gimmicks that were not in the main game, and new enemies. In addition to this, the raid content "Great Disaster" will be distributed (not yet available at the time of writing), so it can be said that this is a big deal. Ghosts of Tsushima" has received high praise for its single-player game, and is also generating a lot of buzz for its multiplayer. It may be the closest thing to "Game of The Year" this year.

(The game has been well received in single-player and the multiplayer is getting a lot of attention.)
