Skyfall Inc. has decided to release an expanded and revised edition of the catalog of the "Syd Mead Exhibition" held in April of the same year as a special project to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of Syd Mead, a master industrial designer known in the Japanese anime scene for his "Tribe Gundam" design.
Syd Mead, a world-renowned industrial designer who provided outstanding designs for numerous films, passed away at the age of 86 on December 30, 2019, coincidentally the year the movie "Blade Runner" was set.
Fortunately, in the spring of 2019, the exhibition "Syd Mead Exhibition PROGRESSIONS TYO 2019" was held in Tokyo, bringing together all of his major works, allowing numerous visitors to see the original drawings in person. Mr. Mead is also said to have been very pleased with its success, saying that it was the best career of his life.
And as you know, he passed away at the end of the year directly after declaring his retirement in September 2019.
An all-color catalog was produced for visitors to last year's Syd Mead exhibition, but it was overwhelmingly well received and sold out halfway through the show. After the exhibition closed, a revised edition was re-released and additional printings were made, but they too were sold out.
On the occasion of the first anniversary of his death, it was decided to release a greatly updated and much-loved edition of the exhibition catalogue in the hope of making it available to fans around the world once again.
There are five points of the "coveted edition," including some world firsts. 1!
1. the world's first collection of "Shoulder of Orion," which has never been shown outside the museum gates!
Until now, "Shoulder of Orion" has only been on display and has never been allowed to be published in catalogs. This time, all the preparatory drafts, line drawings, and finished drafts of this work, which Syd Mead dedicated to the movie "Blade Runner," will be included. This is the world's first and only official book with official permission.
2. the last sketches after his retirement will be specially included!
After the exhibition, we made a three-dimensional version of one of his masterpieces, "Mega Coach," and presented it to Mr. Mead as a radio-controlled car, and later he was so impressed that he sent us his own idea showing how it could be improved. This book also includes a previously unpublished sketch he drew after his retirement.
The book is bound in a luxurious binding befitting a memorial book!
The book is bound in a special hardcover edition with silver foil stamping, and includes 8 pages of additional information on these rare works and a summary of the exhibition.
4. The first production run comes with two types of enclosed extras!

Shoulder of Orion", a masterpiece of the past
Although the title of this work is the last of the self-selected "PROGRESSONS" in Syd Mead's exhibition, it was shown only at the exhibition due to the depth of his passion for the work, and was not allowed to be included in the catalogue. The painting is "Shoulder of Orion" (2011), which depicts the near-death scene of the replicant Roy Bhatti at the end of the movie "Blade Runner". One of the incredible events Roy witnesses is "a spaceship burning on the shoulder of Orion," and the film is inspired by the famous line in which Roy sadly states that his memories of the event will also "disappear like tears in the rain.
The magnitude of Mr. Mead's feelings for this work, which is more than a tribute to the movie, but a legacy for the future, is immeasurable. On the special occasion of the first anniversary of his death, Syd Mead has kindly agreed that the time has come to pass it on to future generations, and this is the first time in the world that it has been published in the "beloved edition". The book was opened after being flown in.
