Katsuhiro Otomo's "AKIRA" to be screened at 7 Dolby Cinema locations nationwide starting 12/4! Experience the end of 2020 at the ultimate cinema!

Katsuhiro Otomo's "AKIRA" will be released in all seven Dolby Cinema theaters in Japan on December 4, 2020 (Friday), the last day of this year 2020, the year in which the film is also set.

AKIRA" has been serialized in Young Magazine (Kodansha) since December 1982. The comic with its original worldview is one of the masterpieces in the history of manga, which has succeeded in worldwide sales of books, character goods, etc., with an astonishingly high number of memorabilia and goods, spreading its name not only in Japan but also overseas.

"AKIRA" directed by Katsuhiro Otomo has been selected as the opening film of TAAF2020! The 4K remastered version will be screened for the first time!

Directed by the original creator Katsuhiro Otomo himself, the world-class theatrical animation "AKIRA" was born in 1988 after three years of production and a total production cost of 1 billion yen, an unthinkable amount of time, effort, and the best animation techniques available at the time.

With the top-secret "Akira" at the center, contemporary politics and religion intermingle, and the energy of youth bursts forth in the midst of it, the scale of the story grows ever larger. The unpredictable storyline, meticulously detailed cuts, and speedy action scenes that leave no time to catch one's breath are the highlight of the film. More than 30 years have passed since its release in 2020. The film will be screened in Dolby Cinema at the end of this year, coincidentally the same year in which "Akira" is set in the film.
The film will be shown at all seven Dolby Cinema theaters in Japan from December 4, 2020 (Friday).


Dolby Cinema" is a theater design (interior color, space design, and seating arrangement) optimized for the movie experience that is a high-level fusion of the state-of-the-art HDR imaging technology "Dolby VisionTM" and the stereoscopic sound technology "Dolby AtmosR". Dolby Cinema is a premium cinema format developed by Dolby Laboratories, Inc.


By remastering 4K scanned images from 35mm master positive film into "Dolby Vision" HDR images, the images of "AKIRA" were reconstructed with contrast, brightness, and color gamut that were impossible to express in conventional formats.

The result is an immersive visual experience unlike anything seen before, with bright lights and deep details in dark areas that were previously obscured by conventional formats.


The year 2020, the year in which "AKIRA" is set, will conclude with the ultimate cinema experience in Dolby Cinema starting on December 4.

<Synopsis.
In July 1988, a new type of bomb is used in the Kanto area, and World War III breaks out.

Thirty-one years later, in 2019, Neo Tokyo, a megalopolis built on Tokyo Bay, is regaining its former prosperity with the Olympics to be held the following year.

Kaneda, the leader of a group of healthy juvenile delinquents, has been riding his motorcycle in this devastated city and repeatedly running amok and fighting. One night, his fellow member Tetsuo encounters a strange experimental boy during a runaway and is knocked down and injured. In front of the stunned Kaneda and his friends, they are taken away to a military laboratory.

Kaneda attempts to infiltrate the laboratory to rescue Tetsuo. However, there he sees the insane Tetsuo, who has awakened to new "powers" due to excessive human experimentation.

Meanwhile, in a special baby room at the institute, a young experimental subject predicts the awakening of "Top Secret = Akira.

Tetsuo begins to approach the "Akira" that lies deep underground in order to get closer to the mystery of his power...
