Jujutsu Kaisen" is a TV anime based on the manga series by Akutomi Geshi, which has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2018, and has sold more than 12 million copies in total. The TV anime is a dark fantasy in which a high school student, Torajo, enters a world of battles to fight against a curse after a powerful "cursed object" is unsealed. We have just received an official interview with the three cast members who play the first-year members of Jujutsu Kaisen, including Junya Enoki (Yujin Toraje), Yuma Uchida (Megumi Fushikuro), and Asami Seto (No Rose Kugisaki). They talk about their impressions of each character and the teamwork of the three.

Torajo's Strength and Madness

─ First of all, what is your impression of the characters you are in charge of? How do you feel about Eugene Toraje, Enoki-san?

Enoki: I think he is basically an energetic, athletic type, but on the other hand, he is also weak and fearful of strong enemies once he faces death. In truth, he is not a "strong" character who can go headlong into anything. But I think that is what makes him so human and attractive. I also often find that I don't really know myself, and it is only when someone else points this out to me that I realize that I was right.

Uchida: I feel that Torajo has a straight "core" of "this is how I want to be. From the outside, it feels like he is "strong and unyielding," but at the same time, it can also feel like he is "clumsy.

Seto: It is true that you are straight, but I also feel that there is more to you than that. I think she is straight, but I also feel that there is more to her than that. When I watched the first episode of the anime, I honestly felt that Torajo was scary in my opinion. Even though he was in such a critical situation, he seemed to be somehow out of it, his language, the way he always had a bird's eye view of the situation, and his objectivity. ...... "Why is he so calm and unfazed?" I was a little creeped out when I thought about it.

Enoki: It's true that you often blurted out things during school battles and such. I myself felt that he was being deliberately insensitive in some ways. I thought he was too scared to be taken seriously.

Uchida It is true that it is a little scary to go into a situation like that. Something unknown, something that makes you say, without hesitation, "I have to go! I have to go! But I envy him for his straightforwardness.

The real faces of Fusekuro and Kugisaki

─ Next, what is your impression of Megumi Fushikuro?

Uchida: My first impression of Fushikuro was that she was blunt and did not express her emotions very much. But in fact, her criteria for choosing her actions are complex. In fact, he is a person who thinks about many things. There are many monologues in his works, but he looks at his surroundings and the situation, thinks about various things, and makes decisions based on "this is the natural thing to do in this situation," rather than on what he wants to do. I now wonder if that is why I am less likely to push my own emotions out of my mind. Of course, I am still young, so I have feelings of fear and frustration, but I am too preoccupied to express them well. I try to keep that balance in my acting. I try not to go too far with my emotions.

Enoki: I think Fushikuro is kind. He has a realist side, but he is also compassionate and wants to help those he perceives as "good people.

Seto: I thought Fushikuro was cool myself, and I think he is probably a role that people who watch the movie will admire as "cool" too. I thought he would be popular at ...... (laughs).

Uchida (laughs).

Enoki: Indeed, he seems popular (laughs).

Seto Moreover, he is still young and in a period of change. It will be interesting to see what kind of man Fusekuro will become under Torajo's influence.

─ ─ And then there is Kugisakino Roses. How do you perceive her, Mr. Seto?

Seto: Novala is bossy and has a violent tone, but I think that is because she has a firm confidence in herself. She has a firm core within herself and does not waver. However, "unshakeable" does not mean "straight," but rather distorted with conviction. I imagine him as a child who goes ahead with his convictions even on a crooked path. And I wonder if his arrogant attitude sometimes puts his friends at each other's throats (laughs).

Enoki: No, Kugisaki is the most "manly" of all. Even when he is about to lose a battle against the enemy, he is not at all perturbed. He is the most spirited of the three.

Seto: "Spirited" sounds like a school club activity (laughs).

Uchida I like Kugisaki ...... more than I expected.

Seto "Unexpectedly"?

Uchida Oh, no, no, I love ......!　The strong point (laughs). And he is the type of child who can influence others. She has a strong desire to interfere with others, so she is able to convey what she needs to say to others. It takes a very strong person to be able to communicate something. It is amazing to watch him do that.

─ ─ Mr. Enoki, what do you think of girls like Kugizaki?

Enoki: I like ...... more than I expected (laughs). When you get to know them, they are not bad guys.

Seto Well, Wild Rose had a terrible image of Fushiguro and Torajo at first, too.

Uchida He said, "They look like they might pour fuel oil on seagulls and set them on fire.

Enoki: Torajo is "the type of person who used to eat snot when he was a child" (laughs).

Seto: Is that what strong-minded people are like?　At first, we all looked at each other with a prejudiced image of each other. But all three of us have a proper sense of humanity, so I guess once we get to know each other, we can open up to each other, or rather, we can let go of our prejudices and get to know each other.

The Natural Teamwork of the Three

─ How do you feel about their teamwork and balance as a trio?

Enoki: The balance is good. Well, it would fall apart without Fushikuro (laughs).

Seto: As a rule, the three of us have an excessive amount of blurriness.

Uchida Strictly speaking, none of us is a comedian.

Enoki They basically leave each other's blurbs unattended.

Seto When Torajo goes off the rails, No-Rose is in the position of pointing out things rather than commenting on them. Especially in "Jyujusanpo." It is different from the tense scenes in the main story.

Uchida: When there is someone who comes out, there is someone who pulls back, and when there is someone who pulls back, there is someone who comes out. I feel that such a combination is naturally formed.

Enoki Each of us does whatever we want.

Uchida Yes, we all say whatever we want, but for some reason, we are in the same groove. We don't have much in common in our conversations, such as when we say, "We agree on that! We don't have a lot in common, but we do share the same conversational tension and groove.

Enoki It's not like we're friends. ......

Uchida But we do hang out together. ......

Enoki Maybe we are similar, all three of us.

Seto And maybe we are together because we both have the feeling that we don't want to lose. We are connected only by the fact that we are "sorcerers," and we really don't want to lose to each other. I think it is because of this rivalry that we are always close to each other.

─ ─ Finally, please tell us about the future highlights of the TV anime.

Seto: The highlight of "Wild Roses" is the start of the "women's battle" that we can't lose (laughs). I would like you to pay attention to her relationship with the female seniors of the Jutsu Senmon Gakko.

Uchida: For Fushiguro, I think what Torajo showed him was quite shocking. How will he change after that? I am sure that this will be depicted over a long span of time, so I hope that you are looking forward to it now.

Enoki: From now on, we will see the appearance of Jumpei Yoshino, who will have a great impact on Torazane's way of life.
