The results of the "2020 Fall Anime Popularity Poll" are in! First place went to "Adachi and Shimamura," which beautifully depicts the friendship and love between high school girls!
Akiba Research Institute's official poll project, "Which anime was interesting? Compared to the spring and summer anime, which were affected by the new coronavirus, the number of works in the fall anime season of 2020 was more numerous and the contents of the anime were very stable. The number of works seems to have been very stable, but which works did Akiba Research Institute users rate as the most interesting?
First, let's take a look at the works ranked in the top 10.
No. 1: "Adachi and Shimamura" (212 votes)
No. 2: "Witches' Travels" (181 votes)
No. 3: "On a Million Lives I Stand" (121 votes)
No.4: "501st JOINT COMBAT AIR WING Strike Witches ROAD to BERLIN" (70 votes)
No. 5: "Moriarty in sorrow" (56 votes)
No. 6: "Bear Bear Bear Bear" (41 votes)
No.6: "LOVE LIVE! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Club" (41 votes)
No.8: "Assault Lily Bouquet" (30 votes)
No.8: "Good night at the devil king's castle" (30 votes)
No. 10: " The Lesser Students of Magical High School: The Visitors" (29 votes)
Adachi and Shimamura" was selected first place out of many works. This work depicting friendship and affection between high school girls is one of the yuri genre, but it was popular among both men and women alike for its detailed depiction of the emotional state of the girls, and the freshness of their feelings expressed without being obnoxious. Tezuka Productions, a long-established animation company, was involved in the production of the animation, and the drawings and direction are very good. Combined with the popularity of Akari Kito and Miki Ito, who voiced the two main characters, it can be said that this work also gained high popularity.
Witch's Journey" came in at No. 2. The story is about a witch, Irena (CV: Kaede Hondo), who travels around, meeting various people in various cities and getting involved in various problems and incidents that occur there. This work was ranked second in the "2020 Fall Anime Popularity Poll" held prior to the start of the fall anime season, showing high expectations for the series.
In third place was "I'm Standing on a Million Lives," which was also ranked second in this year's poll. This work, based on a comic serialized in Kodansha's "Bessatsu Shonen Magazine," has a rather hard development for an alternate world reincarnation story, and the protagonist has a somewhat oblique attitude, making it a work that can be liked or disliked by different people. However, it is rather unique among the fall 2020 anime series, which were rather soft and gentle, and it may be said that this is the reason why it gained a lot of support. The second season of this work has already been scheduled to air this summer.
In fourth place was "501st JV Strike Witches ROAD to BERLIN. It was ranked fifth in the "2020 Autumn Anime Popularity Poll," but the storyline was well done as it is in the final stages of the final battle to retake Berlin, and it seems to have received a higher rating.
The next at No. 5 was "Moriarty in a melancholy land," which was the No. 1 most popular anime in terms of pre-broadcast expectations. Although the quality of the animation was not bad, the story seemed a bit monotonous, and compared to its pre-broadcast reputation, it seems to have lost a bit of its reputation.
In sixth place, two works were tied for the same number of votes. The first, "Kuma Kuma Bear Bear," is a rather eccentric work about a reincarnation in another world. It was supported by viewers because of its relaxed worldview and leisurely pace. The other is "Love Live! Nijigasaki Gakuen School Idol Club" is the latest in the popular "Love Live! but surprisingly, it did not receive many votes, coming in at No. 6.
Two more works were ranked in the same ratio at No. 8. Assault Lily Bouquet" is an anime version of the original multimedia content "Assault Lily. It is a high school girl, weapon, and buddy story, which is a royal development, and it seems to be a hit with those who like that type of work. The other, "Good Night at the Demon King's Castle," is a comedy work of a loose and fluffy type. Although it was a one-themed work about a kidnapped human princess who causes a commotion in the Demon King's castle as she searches for a good night's sleep, its unique atmosphere and the princess's devilish charms are likely to have attracted a number of repeat viewers.
Lastly, "The Inferior Students of Magical High School: The Visitor Arc" slipped in at No. 10. This is a sequel to a popular series that has been in the spotlight for quite some time, but unfortunately it did not gain the same popularity as the first season, and it slipped a bit to 10th place.
As mentioned above, the fall 2020 anime season featured a wide variety of works, but it seems that new anime rather than sequels to popular works were more highly rated overall. All of the top-ranked works were of high quality, and compared to the previous two cool seasons, which struggled with the Corona disaster, the sense of stability has increased significantly.
