One Year Anniversary! A look back at "Call of Duty: Warzone," the first battle royale in the "CoD" series!

March 11, 2021 marks the first anniversary of the launch of "Call of Duty: Warzone" (CoD WZ). With the server merging of "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare" ("CoD MW") and "Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War" ("CoD BOCW"), the latest in the series, more players are now playing "CoD WZ". In this article, we will introduce an overview of this title and its notable elements.

The latest battle royale in the "Call of Duty" series

This title is bundled with both "CoD MW" and "CoD BOCW," but is also available as an independent title. Basic play is free, so anyone can play it by downloading it from the PS Store (PS Plus membership is required to play online).

When the game was released on March 11, 2020, the game gained popularity at a breakneck pace, with the number of players surpassing 6 million in just 24 hours and reaching 15 million three days later. By October 2020, just before the launch of "CoD BOCW," the game had 80 million downloads, 100 million monthly active users, and has been enjoyed around the world ever since it was integrated with the "CoD MW" server.

CoD WZ" features a battle royale with up to 200 players. Players can play alone or in teams of 2 to 4 players in "Battle Royale Mode," in which they try to be the last survivor while escaping from the oncoming gas, or in "Plunder Mode," in which they compete to see which team can collect the prescribed amount of cash the fastest. The "Battle Royale Mode" is a game in which teams of four players try to escape the gas and survive to the end.

In the "Battle Royal Mode," players who are defeated are sent to a "concentration camp" only before the end of the game, where they can be resurrected by winning a one-on-one battle. During the game, players can also resurrect their friends by paying 4,000 cash at the "purchase station. On the other hand, in "Plunder Mode," respawns are unlimited, so there is no need to take the risk of being defeated seriously. The promise of battle royale games is a one-shot battle with no respawn, but this game is designed to be easy for beginners to get into.

There are many unique elements in this title, such as "purchase stations," where players can obtain various equipment and items in exchange for cash, and "loadout drops," where players can receive pre-set equipment.

Incidentally, the details of the system and how to get around during a match are explained in the following article on Akiba Research Institute. It is based on last year's data, so the details are different now, but the basics remain the same. It should be useful for those who are just starting out.

Weapons from "CoD MW" and "CoD BOCW" can be used.

The servers of "CoD MW" and "CoD BOCW" have been merged, so players can now use weapons from both titles in "CoD WZ". For those who have been playing only this title, this is a great deal, as they can use the weapons of the two titles for free. Since the servers are the same and the status of weapons enhanced in "CoD WZ" will be reflected in each title, there is no need to re-train weapons in "CoD MW" or "CoD BOCW" if the "Battle Royale Mode" is the trigger for playing "CoD MW" or "CoD BOCW. Conversely, if you switch from "CoD MW" or "CoD BOCW" to the stand-alone version of "CoD WZ," you can still use the weapons as they are, since the same enhancements are carried over.

Furthermore, weapons from each title can be used in combination. For example, an AK-47 from "CoD MW" and an AK-47 from "CoD BOCW" can be combined into a single loadout. Depending on how it is done, there could be a powerful combination of weapons from each title.

New spots in "Verdansk" and the new map "Rebirth Island."

In the current "CoD WZ", a new mode "REBIRTH RESURGENCE TRIOS" has been implemented. It takes place on a new map called "Rebirth Island," which is smaller than Verdansk and features speedier matches. In addition, as long as one of the team members survives, his or her friends can return as many times as they wish. The battle royale in Verdansk will be different from the battle royale in the ISLAND.

The Verdansk battle royale has also been updated with a new "shipwreck" on the beach and a new "missile silo" where missiles are stored. Many supply boxes (boxes containing equipment) have been placed in the facility, and some of the most valuable legendary types can be found. As with previous gimmicks, there is no need to obtain access cards or decipher codes, just head to your destination. If you can get there early on, you will have an advantage in later battles.

1 is the shipwreck and 2-4 are the missile silos. Please use this as a reference when going to the new spots.

The most exciting addition to "CoD WZ" is the addition of weapons, and the fact that you can use weapons from two titles for free is a great deal. The weapon types will be enhanced as the season progresses, so we can look forward to more information in the future. The game is still undergoing vigorous updates even after its one-year anniversary, and information will be posted regularly on the official SIE website, so if you are interested, be sure to check there as well.
