The anime "Kyokushudo-do" is aromatic! A warm and healing time" Interview with Chiaki Kon, director of the newest Netflix original anime series "Kyokushudo-do".

The anime "Kyokushudo" (original story by Ono Kosuke, published in "Kurage Bunch" (Shinchosha)) started its worldwide exclusive distribution on Netflix on April 8, 2021. The main character, Ryu, who was feared as an "immortal dragon," has left the world of the Buddhist priests and married Miku, a career woman. He is now a househusband, and he is doing his best to complete his daily household chores.

Director Chiaki Kon, who worked on "Kyokushudo Michi," an at-home gag comedy depicting Ryu's daily life, talked a lot about the behind-the-scenes production of this film, the appeal of the main character Ryu, and how to enjoy this film.

I'm very happy to hear that you enjoyed it as much as I expected. How did you feel when you heard about the anime adaptation?

Now, when I heard about the idea, I was told that it was going to be done in an animation style that didn't move. I had already experienced this method with "Back Street Girls -Gokudolls-", but this time it was much more difficult (laughs).

Laughs] ─ What exactly was the hardest part?

Ima: The acrobatic and large movements in the manga. For example, it was very difficult to make the quick "ta-ta-ta-ta-ta" movements with the knife look as if they were moving in the stopped image. It took me many times longer than for "Back Street Girls - Gokudolls", whether I was doing the storyboards or anything else.

I imagined that the experience you had gained from the previous film made it easier for you.

Now, before I did it, I thought, "This is going to be a piece of cake! but it turned out to be a hell of a lot easier (laughs).

TM: What did you think of the original work when you read it?

Ima: I had heard from several friends that there was an interesting manga, so I knew about it. I had to read it again for the anime adaptation, but to be honest, at first I wasn't sure about the character of Ryu. As I worked on it, I realized that Ryu's position was that of a "blabbermouth" (too late... lol)! I felt like I had a good idea of what I was getting myself into.

What is it about dragons that attracts you so much?

I am tickled by her maternal instincts. I love the way she tries so hard. For example, in the scene where he and Miku go to the ranch to eat lunch, he is very excited, and he denies it while being told off, but at the end, he admits it with a bit of a snarl, "I'm excited! I thought, "He's so honest and cute! I thought, "He's so cute!

Kenjiro Tsuda, who plays Ryu, directed and starred in the live-action PV, which also attracted a lot of attention.

I thought, "He's done it! I was impressed by the scene with the bicycle and the effects. I was impressed.

I was impressed by the effects of the bicycle scene and so on. The voice of Mr. Tsuda really increased the appeal of the dragons.

I love his voice. I think his voice is very cute.

I think so. I'm really attracted to it. There are many unique characters in the game besides the dragons. I love the "Miss" who works in the supermarket.

She is a delicious character (laughs). The ones who get a lot of appearances are Masa and Tiger, but you can find them at ....... If I'm offered a "Miss" character, I'll go to ....... I'm a bit of a maniac, but I like cooking class teachers. I like the way she speaks and the atmosphere of a teacher like her.

I like the way she talks and the atmosphere of a teacher like her.

Is that true? If so, I am very happy. It seems that he himself was really looking forward to the anime version. However, I have a feeling that the shape of the anime is a little different from what he had imagined, but I wonder how he really feels about it (laughs).

TM: I saw your comment that the production made the most of the original work.

Now if you could say so, that would be the best thing for me!

TM: The OP and ED images also have a great impact.

The director of photography of J.C.STAFF was in charge of the OP. I was impressed by the young director's sense of style. I am very satisfied with the tempo and the timing of the transitions, which were done in a very cool way.

Tatsu is a perfect housekeeper, but are there any household chores that you are good at? Is he a Ryu type, or is he a Miku type who works hard and leaves the housework to me? I'd like to know if you are a Ryu type or a Miku type who works hard and leaves the housework to me!

I have to do housework, so I do it, but it's messy. I am the Miku type. The way I hold the knife is similar. First of all, I never cook when I'm sober, so by the time I'm done, it's a hassle, and I end up with something different from what I planned to cook (laughs). (Laughs.) I always think that dragons are great because they do things properly.

T : Then, I would be happy if you have a dragon.

Now, it would be great if I had someone to cook meals and clean the house. I can't sew, I can't make a rag, and I don't like to fold laundry. Huh? I'm not good at everything, am I?

Tëm, how about baking cookies with cute bears, like dragons?

Now, that's out of the question! Sweets are too much to ask for. I have nothing ...... (crying). Oh, there is an episode in the original story where the dragon skips househusband. If it's that one, I can win! If it's skipping, I won't lose! This episode will appear in the anime in the future, so please look forward to it.

T: Once again, what would you say about the anime "Kyokushufudo" in a few words?

I have a quote that was born today. Ahem. The anime "Kyokushufudo" is an aroma. In today's world where there are so many anime that you have to be very prepared to watch, I thought it would be a type of work that you don't have to be so prepared to watch.

Actually, it was so interesting that I was so tense when I watched it! I love the "pause" and "tempo" of the director's works, so I watched it carefully with my posture straightened.

Now, really? Yatter! Thank you so much! I would definitely watch it a second time, without getting worked up, just like taking a break, or if you want, like burning aroma before going to bed, turn on Netflix and fall asleep while watching "Kyokushufudo". We would be happy if you could spend such a relaxing time. Please enjoy "Kyoku Shufudo Michi" and be healed!
