The character PVs for the serial CG drama "Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness" and Leon and Claire are unveiled!
New information has arrived from the CG drama series "Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness," which will be released exclusively worldwide on Netflix in July 2021.
The first "Resident Evil" game was released in 1996, and this year marks the 25th anniversary of the series. This horror action game revolves around two popular characters from the "Resident Evil" series, Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield. The film depicts Leon and Claire, who have passed through numerous deadly encounters, having a chance reunion at the White House and confronting a new threat.
Producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi of Capcom, which has released numerous "Resident Evil" series, will produce and supervise the original story. TMS Entertainment, which has produced various animation works, and Quebico, led by Yoshi Miyamoto, who was the production producer of "Resident Evil: Vendetta," are in charge of full 3DCG animation production.
The Japanese dubbed cast includes Tomoyuki Morikawa as Leon and Yuko Kaita as Claire.
Leon and Claire's Character PV Unleashed!
The "Character PV" focusing on Leon and Claire has been released. When Leon is summoned to the White House to investigate a hacking incident, he has a chance meeting with Claire, who has come to the White House to lobby for the construction of a welfare facility. Claire offers him a strange "picture of a boy" that she acquired in a country she visited for refugee aid, but Leon, perhaps realizing something, tells her not to do anything dangerous and leaves.
Claire tells him, "You don't look good in a suit. Leon is battling an unidentified zombie that has appeared in the White House when the power suddenly goes out, and Claire is searching for the truth behind a strange drawing of a boy. The "true horror" that the two will face in the future begins here...
Comments from Director: Eiichiro Hazumi and Music: Yugo Kanno
Eiichiro Hazumi, who has been highly acclaimed in major Japanese live-action films such as "Umizaru" series, "MOZU" series, and "The sun does not move", is directing his first CG drama series for the latest CG animation film that marks the 25th anniversary of "Resident Evil" series. Director Hazumi, who will present his first animated work with this film, expressed his joy and ambition in taking on this new challenge as follows.
I am honestly more pleased than pressured to be involved in a work that has a long history and a large number of fans. Although this is a full CG animation, I was conscious of giving it a more live-action feel by trying to create an atmosphere with camera work and lighting that is similar to what I usually do when I shoot live-action films. I hope that fans of the "Resident Evil" series, as well as those who are not fans of the series, will enjoy watching the film in one sitting.
The music that enhances the epic story is composed by Yugo Kanno, who is active in a wide range of genres, including film, TV drama, animation, documentary, and video game music.
He has taken on the challenge of building a new worldview while maintaining the spirit of the previous "Resident Evil" films. I was also conscious of the fact that the film will be distributed on Netflix, so I was aware of the scale of a Hollywood movie so that people overseas can also enjoy it when they watch it. Director Hazumi gave us the same detailed orders as he always does, so we did not feel that we created the film with animation in mind. In fact, now I feel like, "Oh, that's right, that's what I was thinking of.
In this way, Mr. Kanno reflected on the days when he continued to devise ways to express the "Resident Evil" style that has been loved around the world.

Q. You have built a solid career in live-action films, including many popular action movies, but what is your enthusiasm for directing your first animated film and 3DCG series of "Resident Evil," an IP that is popular around the world?
I am more pleased than pressured to be involved with a work that has a long history and a large number of fans. This is my first full CG animation project, and with the help of the wonderful staff, I feel as if I have managed to bring it to completion.
Although this is a full CG animation, I was conscious of giving it a more live-action feel by trying to create an atmosphere with camera work and lighting as close as possible to that of my usual live-action shooting. The characters are loved by many people, so it was also reassuring to know that the motion capture actors and voice actors were the same cast that played Leon and Claire, so that we did not betray the fans.
Q. Leon and Claire are two of the most popular characters in the "Resident Evil" series, loved by fans around the world.
I was given a hint by Mr. Kobayashi, the executive producer, and by depicting the year 2006, which is in between the young Leon with a strong sense of justice and the Leon of the 2014 era of "Resident Evil: Vendetta" who is getting a little tired of the endless battles, I was able to create a slightly bitter, black-and-white, square-ish storyline. The contrast with the square Claire is also drawn by depicting him in a slightly bitter position.
Leon in a suit is an important key visual to symbolize this, and I thought that Leon was the quintessential Leon because he looked so cool in the suit.
Q. This film will be distributed in 190 countries through Netflix. What kind of people do you want to see this film?
I am very thankful that Alex, the ADR director, worked very hard for a long period of time from the time of motion capture to translate the dialogue into English, including the culture and customs of English-speaking countries.
When we received the offer from producer Mr. Shinohara, he ordered us to create a suspenseful atmosphere, so we started with the mystery of "What happened in the battlefield of Penamustan six years ago?" I made the cards placed face down in the game shuffle around the time line, and the cards are gradually rolled up.
I hope that not only fans of Bio but also those who are not fans of Bio will enjoy watching the film at once.

Q. You have worked on music for various genres of films. What were you conscious of when creating the music for this film, and what did you do to make it unique to "Resident Evil"?
Since "Resident Evil" is a globally popular series, I had a chance to look at the past "Resident Evil" films and tried to create a new worldview while inheriting many of the spirit of the series. Also, being aware that the film will be distributed on Netflix, we were conscious of the scale of a Hollywood movie so that people overseas can enjoy it when they watch it.
───Q. Please tell us about any "new discoveries" that you and Director Hazumi have made in the past live-action films and dramas that you have worked on together, discoveries that were made only in the animation field, or any points that you paid more attention to.
As with live-action films and TV dramas, Director Hazumi gave me the same detailed orders as he always does, such as detailed impressions and how he wanted the images to look, while looking at the animation. So I didn't feel as if I created it with animation in mind.
───Q. What kind of themes or images did you share with director Hazumi when creating the music for this film? Also, please tell us about any memorable stories from the process of communicating with the director.
I knew from the first communication with Director Hazumi about the demo soundtrack for the trailer that if the music was too scary, it would not be Resident Evil, even though it is a zombie film. However, it is no good if the music is not scary, so I shared the balance with Director Hazumi in the demo soundtrack, and we composed the music through trial and error.
