1. Epic battle between plants and zombies! Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition" is a casual and easy-to-play tower defense game.

  • Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition" (PopCap Games, Inc.)
  • Genre: Strategy
  • Release date: May 6, 2009
  • Price: 498 yen (as of May 19, 2021)

The popular asymmetrical fighting game "Dead by Daylight " recently made headlines with the news that a collaborative chapter with "Resident Evil" will be available. The new killer, Nemesis, is said to have the distinction of following AI-powered zombies, and players will be shivering in fear of zombies, but the upcoming "Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition" is a zombie-packed tower Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition" is a tower defense game with a lot of zombies.

Please note that this title is not available in Japanese at the time of this writing.

This is a tower defense game in which the player fights off hordes of zombies that are trying to invade the player's house. While the world of the game is based on the classic horror game motif of zombies, the game is characterized by its cartoon-like, loose, pop-style graphics without a sense of horror.

When you start the main adventure mode, a lush garden divided into squares spreads out before your eyes. This seemingly peaceful garden is the stage of the game and the battlefield where you will engage in fierce battles with zombies. The defensive towers that the player must set up to defeat the zombies that are slowly coming from the right side of the screen are the "Plants," as the title implies.

There are more than 40 different types of plants in the game, including the "peashooter," a plant that shoots beans toward the front of the screen, the "wall-nut," a huge nut that has no offensive power but is highly durable, and the "chomper," a man-eating plant that specializes in close range and will eat any zombie that comes close to it. There are more than 40 types of plants in the game, each with different performance and attack types.

You fight zombies by placing these plants in the squares of your garden, but you cannot place them whenever you want and as much as you want. The cost to place plants in this work is "sun," which is sunlight that falls from the sky at regular intervals. This system of collecting sun to place plants allows players to enjoy the thrill of waiting for the sun to accumulate while watching the zombies slowly approach, and the exhilaration of using the accumulated sun to place attacking plants and launch a counterattack at once.

Among the plants, there is the sunflower " sunflower," which regularly produces "sun" instead of being able to attack, and the mushroom "sunshroom.

There are also many plants with special attacks, such as the cherry bomb, which explodes immediately after it is placed, and the potato mine, which explodes when touched by a zombie.

Whether you want to start out by earning sun and gradually build up your combat readiness, or whether you want to start out by placing plants for combat, or whether you want to fight back while saving as much sun as possible and release bombs at the right moment against a strong enemy...... One of the charms of this title is that you can enjoy the pleasure of creating your own strategies to suit your own preferences.

The overwhelming number of plant variations in this title (more than 40) is eye-catching, but in fact, there are also more than 20 variations of zombies, which are the enemies of the game.

Some zombies are equipped only with iron buckets and triangular cones from construction sites, but they have much stronger defense than normal zombies, some pole vault zombies can jump over plants only once, and some dancing zombies summon back-up dancers in all directions. The zombies are a variety of nasty and peculiar creatures. There are many situations in which players are required to use their judgment and instantaneous power to identify the type of zombie that appears from the right edge of the screen and immediately select a plant to place, providing the true essence of a busy but fun tower defense game.

Plants and zombies are not the only unique characters in this title. The garden, the stage where they battle, is also rich in variety.

The stages have a variety of gimmicks, such as a night gimmick that prevents suns from falling from the sky, or a pool gimmick that only allows plants that are exclusive to the water to be placed in the pool.

With the exception of the tutorial stage at the beginning of the game, all stages in this title consist of a total of 45 squares (5 x 9), and the screen is fixed to one screen without scrolling. The game is designed to be played in a completely different way in each stage, even within the same 45 squares.

Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition" is a tower defense game that takes the high road, despite its quirky worldview in which zombies are fought off by plants. With simple, easy-to-understand rules, a casual difficulty level that makes it easy to play, and a reasonable price (less than one coin at the time of this writing), this game is a good introduction to the tower defense genre. If you are interested in the tower defense genre, please check it out.

2. Endless challenging elements! Infinitode 2 - Infinite Tower Defense" is a simple looking tower defense game with a lot of depth.

  • Infinitode 2 - Infinite Tower Defense" (Prineside)
  • Genre: Strategy
  • Release date: April 30, 2021
  • Price: 520 yen (as of May 19, 2021)

Plants vs. Zombies GOTY Edition" introduced earlier was a title with impressive pop characters, but "Infinitode 2 - Infinite Tower Defense," introduced next, is a title with a cool design atmosphere. Infinitode 2 - Infinite Tower Defense" is a title with a cool atmosphere.

Infinitode 2 - Infinite Tower Defense" is a tower defense game with simple graphics, retro-style pico-pico sounds and chiptune background music.

The basic rule of the game is to intercept enemy troops that appear from purple objects called portals and invade the player's own green base by setting up defensive towers in the empty squares. There are several types of towers available, including long-range snipers with long reloads and short-range cannons with high attack power. Overall, it can be said that the game employs a relatively orthodox system for tower defense.

The first thing that catches the eye in this title is that all enemies and allies are drawn in simple shapes such as circles and triangles.

Not only are they stylish in appearance, but they are also intuitive to play, as the game incorporates the impressions of the shapes, such as "square enemies are more durable than round enemies" and so on. The author felt that the use of simple shapes in tower defense games, which tend to clutter up the screen due to the large number of attacking enemies, makes the overall screen look clearer, which is another point that makes this title easy to play.

As mentioned above, this is a very orthodox tower defense game, but it also has a number of unique systems that are not often seen in other games of the same genre.

One such system is the ability to set strategies for each tower. In this game, priority targets can be set for each tower to intercept enemies , such as "tail end," "weakest," and "strongest. In tower defense games, players tend to just watch the game after building and leveling up their towers, but this title has a system that allows players to constantly work on the game, such as changing tower settings each time in preparation for the next wave, so players can enjoy thrilling play without ever getting bored. This makes for a thrilling game that players will never get tired of.

Another unique system of this game that should be mentioned is "research.

This is a function that allows players to use materials acquired by defeating enemies or completing quests set for each stage to open up upgrades and receive various benefits, such as an increase in the tower's basic abilities and an increase in the experience gain multiplier. In other words, it is the so-called "skill tree system," which is often seen in RPGs but seems quite rare to be implemented in a tower defense game. Moreover, the number of these upgrades is huge, more than 400, which is more than enough to make it a challenging element. As the title of the game says, the game is truly "Infinite.

Research" is not the only challenging element in this title. There is a "map editor" that allows you to create your own stages, an online ranking system that allows you to compete with players around the world for the high score of each stage, daily quests that are updated daily, daily bonuses, and much more. The game is a tower defense game that is addictive and melts away time quickly, but this is a full-fledged swamp, and the game does not end after the first completion, so you will never get bored of it.

With its simple visuals and orthodox gameplay, Infinitode 2 offers a large amount of challenging elements that are too deep to be enjoyed. I can confidently recommend this title to both those who have never played tower defense games and those who are tower defense fanatics.

3. "Oyaosan wa Maou-sama! Maison de Maou," a unique work of apartment management x tower defense

  • Maison de Maou" (Petit Depotto)
  • Genre: Simulation
  • Release date: August 16, 2013
  • Price: 398 yen (as of May 19, 2021)
  • Copyright: (C) 2013 Petit Depotto

A management simulation game that lets you enjoy the fun of managing various facilities such as amusement parks, aquariums, and department stores. Everyone has probably played this classic genre at least once, but "Maison de Maou" introduced hereafter is a unique work that combines such a management simulation game and tower defense.

The setting of the game, with its soft, hand-drawn graphics, is a small apartment with a shabby atmosphere. The protagonist of the game is an uncle with a beard, glasses, a haircut that shines with his individuality, and cape-like oversized clothes. What is hidden is that this man is the "Demon King" of the title of this work. There is a lyric in Schubert's song "The Demon King" that says, "There is a Demon King, I'm scared." If it was this Demon King that the little boy saw, I don't think it is so scary. ...... No, I think it is rather scary on the contrary...? I'm not sure what to expect.

The purpose of the Demon King in this work is to conquer the world. The word "......" sounds grandiose, but what you actually have to do to achieve this goal is to manage an apartment building, which is a very simple and steady activity. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

When you start the game, monsters that look like chicks or centaurs will appear in front of the sign in front of your apartment building, one after another.

Click on the monster with the lightbulb balloon, and you will be able to move into an available room in the apartment.

The system is based on the principle that the monster earns rent for a certain period of time, but if the rent is set too high or the environment of the room is too bad, the monster's satisfaction level will decrease. On the other hand, if the room is furnished with furniture that the residents want, their satisfaction level can be increased. This will give the residents bonuses to various parameters such as attack and defense strength. This is exactly the feel of a management simulation game.

Now, why do parameters such as "attack power" and "defense power" appear in an apartment management simulation game? The answer is simple: this is not just a management simulation game, but also a tower defense game.

In this world of demon kings and monsters, there are, as is usual in fantasy worlds, adventurers who plot to defeat them. Players can select quests from a sign in front of their apartments to lure the adventurers out.

The adventurers who arrive at the apartment will attack the tent, or demon king's room, set up on the roof, and the player's role is to knock on the door of the room where the residents live and ask them to fight back. The unique feature of this title is that players can enjoy strategies unique to apartment management simulations, such as placing residents who attack from a distance in rooms on the far side of the floor, or knocking on doors at just the right moment to trap adventurers with their residents. As you complete quests, you will earn money as rewards and open up new characters and items to make your apartment more comfortable and robust.

Another unique aspect of this title is that the monsters living in the apartments are not just in their rooms, but each has a tightly knit lifestyle. Each of the monsters has a job (although some are unemployed) and occasionally leaves the apartment to go to work or play. If adventurers arrive while the monsters are away, the demon king's army will be in trouble, so be careful. In addition, residents may live together with their loved ones, become a family, and have children. Since children have higher status than their parents, we would like to actively let them have more generations in order to conquer the game.

One of the interesting aspects of the game is that the lives of the monsters are used for tower defense strategies, but it is also worth mentioning that simply watching the lives of the monsters is fun in itself. The monsters' lives are also fun to watch! That's great! You are guaranteed to grin as you take a peek into the lives of the residents.

Maison de Maou" is a unique game system that combines apartment management and tower defense in a unique way. In fact, this game has a long history, starting with its distribution for Xbox 360 in 2012, almost 10 years ago, and has been ported to many platforms including Switch and PS4 as well as Steam, and its fun is well documented. If the graphics, worldview, system, or any other aspect of the game appeals to you, please give it a try.

Tower defense games that you can sit back and enjoy on Steam are also good!

So, we have introduced three recommended games.

Tower defense is a genre that is popular all over the world, especially for smartphone games. If you usually enjoy playing tower defense games on your smartphone in your spare time or on the move, you may want to sit down and play them on Steam once in a while. However, please note that we cannot be held responsible if you get too hooked and can't leave your computer at all!
