[One lucky winner will receive an autographed copy! At the very end of the recording session, I overcame a big obstacle! Interview with Amemiya Ten, who plays Elizabeth, in commemoration of the release of "The Seven Deadly Sins The Movie: The Light Cursed Ones!
The movie "The Seven Deadly Sins The Movie: The Light Cursed" will be released on July 2, 2021 (Fri.) in Japan, following the final chapter of the TV series "The Seven Deadly Sins: Judgment of Wrath". The film will be a completely original story newly drawn by the original author, Suzuki Hisashi.
The movie "The Seven Deadly Sins: Cursed by Light" depicts the world after the "Holy War," in which humans, goddesses, fairies, giants, and other four races fought against the demonic gods.
Amemiya Ten, who has played the role of Elizabeth since the TV anime began airing in 2014, talks a lot about the film, which will be released while the afterglow of the TV series is still fresh.
Q: What did you think when you heard that the movie "The Seven Deadly Sins the Movie: The Light Cursed" would be produced as a continuation of the TV anime series?
Amemiya: I was surprised because I had previously released "The Seven Deadly Sins The Movie: Prisoners of the Sky" (2018 film) and never imagined there would be another theater version. However, since Mr. Suzuki Oh drew the story for the first theatrical version, I thought it might be possible this time as well, and I was looking forward to learning the story (laughs).
Q: Elizabeth is a role that you received shortly after your debut. What kind of presence has Elizabeth become in your mind and what have you received from her over the seven years you have been playing the role?
Amemiya: I feel that Elizabeth has given me so much that if I had not met her seven years ago, I would be a different actor today. Even though I thought, "I like this work and would like to play this character," I did not think that Elizabeth would be chosen for me because she was so unlike me. So there were honestly some things that I could not relate to, such as "Why did she choose these words for this scene?" Through the repeated process of understanding each of these things, I gradually came to understand what Elizabeth had that I didn't. That is how I have grown as an actor. I think this has led to my current growth as an actor.
I am that ...... deeply affectionate type, or rather, I am not the motherly type (laughs). I can be affectionate if it's to someone I love who is close to me, but Elizabeth's love is very broad. She has a strong sense of benevolence or charity, which is something I don't have, so that was a difficult part for me to play. But "The Seven Deadly Sins" is a story that conveys not only Elizabeth's love, but also each of us has our own form of love, so I was able to learn about the form of love and how to express it through Elizabeth and the work "The Seven Deadly Sins.
Q: In that sense, you must have felt your own growth in this recording.
Amemiya: This time, I was alone with Hiroki Kaji, who played Meliodas, and we recorded our scenes together, so we didn't have a lot of time to chat. However, there is a scene where Meliodas and Elizabeth are alone, and Meliodas is on his knees as they talk. I could feel his love for her. The way Mr. Kaji said that made me very happy because I felt that he was truly thinking of me.
I had always thought that the expression of love was a major challenge and obstacle for me, so I was very happy to hear the heartfelt words of a wonderful senior in the final moments of the film version, and it has become a precious memory for me.
Q: The story takes place after the "holy war" against the Demon Gods in the TV anime series has ended and the world has become peaceful.
Amemiya: When I received the images of the movie version, the picture was almost complete and I could clearly see the expressions of the characters. I could see Elizabeth's joyful expression there, and I could tell that she was finally in a situation where she could truly enjoy her honeymoon with Meliodas after being freed from the long battle and things that were on her mind.
From there, problems arise, but even as they head there, they seem to be having a bit of fun. I felt that this was the kind of happy-go-lucky Elizabeth that you can only see in this theater version, and that comes out only after the big battle is over. I felt it was refreshing to see her talking calmly with Meliodas in a happy mood with a musical note at the end of the word, without any nervousness or preoccupation.
Q: Mr. Kaji plays Zeldris, who is also Meliodas' younger brother.
Amemiya: Actually, the day before Mr. Kaji and I recorded, Zeldris and Gerda (CV. Yuko Kaita) were recording together, and Meliodas and Zeldris were recording separately. Meliodas and Zeldris were recorded separately, so I have not been able to see the recording of Zeldris' side.
In the movie version, we get to see Zeldris' expression when he is alone with Gerda, which was not depicted in the TV animation or the original work. I'm really looking forward to seeing how she plays the role and how the scene will turn out.
Q: Since you were not able to record the scene together, it makes it even more enjoyable to watch the video.
Amemiya: This time there is a scene where Meliodas and Zeldris fight together, and I think both are strong and absolutely cool. That's why I'm looking forward to the joint fight scene. I am also looking forward to seeing how the scene with Kana Kurashina, who plays the supreme deity (Elizabeth's mother and the leader of the goddess tribe), will turn out.
Q: The conversation with the Supreme Being is one of the highlights, isn't it?
Amemiya: That is a very impressive scene. I had never had a conversation with the Supreme Being before, so I was looking forward to it from the moment I received the script. However, there were some difficulties during the recording. The Supreme Being is a physically large being of a different size, so even when we were talking one-on-one, I had to speak to him as if I was throwing something at him. I had to put my many years of thoughts and feelings into it, so that was difficult. The more distant you speak, the more difficult it is to convey delicate emotions. ......
It was difficult for me to put together the play while thinking about what I wanted to convey the most, even though everything was important.
However, the scene that I thought was more important for me to perform was not only the Supreme Being, but also Meliodas, who is a familiar presence and whom Elizabeth loves, and her father-in-law, Baltra...... father. I wanted to play this conversation scene with great care. The Supreme Being is the creator, but from my point of view as Elizabeth's actor, my real family is my father, even though we are not blood related. The conversation is not a flashy scene, but I can feel the love they have for each other. Personally, that is my favorite part of the scene, and I would like you to see it!
Q: "The Seven Deadly Sins" is indeed a work that depicts various kinds of love, isn't it? Going a little off topic, is there a coupling in this work that you like the most, or that you favor?
Amemiya: In the movie version, I thought the pairing of Zeldris and Gerda was "this is good! (Laughs) I felt that they had a strong bond in the main TV anime, and I could see that Zeldris was quite a cute character, but they went even further than that, so I wanted to keep an eye on these two.
Also, the indescribable distance between Merlin (CV. Maaya Sakamoto) and Escanor (CV. Tomokazu Sugita) is also hot. The end of Escanor's life was a really wonderful end, and I really liked that scene (TV anime "The Seven Deadly Sins: Wrathful Judgement," episode 20, "Kutsu ni Ten no Kai wo Kudatsu"). So I can't choose between these two couples. I guess both!
-And one more thing. Meliodas and Elizabeth overcame their respective cursed destinies of "eternal reincarnation" and "eternal life." What comes to mind as an event in which you overcame your destiny, or an event that significantly changed your destiny?
Amemiya: If we are talking about something that changed my destiny, it would have to be the time I applied for an audition for an agency. I still didn't know what a voice actor was, so I just wrote my resume out of a strong yearning. (Laughs.) But about five minutes before the post office closed, I made up my mind, "I'll send it out! I made up my mind and ran in the rain to send it out, and that's how I got to where I am today. ...... If I hadn't run out of the Macintosh at that time, I wouldn't be here, and I think that decision wasn't a mistake (laughs).
I would like to say thank you for your decision at that time, Amemiya-san (laughs). Lastly, do you have a message for your fans?
Amemiya: Ever since the first theatrical version, I have always thought that this work would look great in a theatrical version. This time, there are as many cool battle scenes as the previous one, and the love story, which is the theme of the "Seven Deadly Sins," is scattered all over the place, including the love between brothers Meliodas and Zeldris and the love between parents Elizabeth and Bartra, which is not depicted in the TV anime. I hope that you will see the important love stories in these scenes as well.
