PS5 major update is now available! 3D audio support, expanded mobile features, and more!
Sony Interactive Entertainment released the second major system software update for the PlayStation 5 today, Wednesday, September 15, 2021.
This update adds a variety of improvements to the PS5 user experience, including 3D audio support for the TV's built-in speakers. It also supports storage expansion with M.2 SSDs, making it possible to install PS5 and PS4 games and media apps on M.2 SSDs and to boot directly from M.2 SSDs.
In addition, mobile-oriented enhancements are planned. Starting tomorrow, the PS Remote Play app will be available not only over Wi-Fi, but also over mobile data communications, and next week, on Thursday, September 23, an update will make it possible to watch the PS5 share screen screen from the PS App.
[Introduction Movie
Below are the main features that will be added to PS5, PS4, and mobile apps with this update.
PS5 UX Improvements
In this update, the UX has been improved so that users can more easily view, customize and manage game content and various settings.
■Control Center Customization
The control center can now be customized more freely, with more controls that can be shown/hidden and the order can be rearranged.
Game Base Improvements
You can now access the party's text chat and send messages from the Game Base in the Control Center.
[The Game Base screen now shows the number of online, in-take, and offline friends. You can now accept, deny, and cancel friend requests at once.
■Improved game library and home screen
When both PS5 and PS4 versions of the same game are installed, they are now displayed separately on the home screen and in the "Installed" tab of the library. In addition, the game's platform is now displayed as an icon for easy viewing.
■Addition of voice reading function operation
When accessibility voice reading is enabled, pressing the PS button and △ button simultaneously now pauses and resumes the voice reading. In addition, pressing the PS button and R1 button at the same time can read aloud again.
Customizing games and social functions
PlayStation Now resolution selection and communication connection test
PS Now now allows you to select the maximum streaming resolution from 720p or 1080p, depending on your preference (the maximum resolution may vary depending on the game you are playing). Also, you can now test your streaming connection to see if there are any problems with your Internet connection.
■Addition of "Leader" as a type of applause.
PS5 games allow players to applaud other players for their actions after an online match. Leader" is a type of applause that recognizes a player who moves strategically with planning and inspires other players. Applause sent to a player is displayed on the player's profile screen.
■Automatic capture of "personal best" videos
When a player plays a challenge in a PS5 game and records a personal best time or score, the play can now be automatically saved in a video clip. This video clip can be shared immediately in the Challenge Card in the Control Center or later in the Media Gallery.
The auto-capture settings can be changed under "Capture and Broadcast.
■ New Trophy Tracker
A Trophy Tracker has been added to the Control Center, allowing users to track up to five trophies per game.
3D audio support on TV speakers
This PS5 update adds 3D audio support for the TV's built-in speakers. Enabling this feature from the Sound menu in Settings will convert normal 2-channel TV speaker audio into 3D audio for a more immersive gameplay experience.
By using the DualSense wireless controller's microphone to measure the room's acoustic characteristics, it is possible to reflect the 3D audio settings that are appropriate for your room.
Since the launch of PS5, we have received positive feedback from many users and developers about 3D audio using compatible headsets. With this update, we were able to add new support for the TV's built-in speakers.
In addition, users of the PULSE 3D Wireless Headset can now set the audio EQ function from [Sound] in the Control Center. EQ profiles can be selected from a large number of presets.
Storage Expansion with M.2 SSD
Starting Wednesday, September 15, PS5 users worldwide can expand the storage capacity of their PS5 by using M.2 SSDs. M.2 SSDs are a type of high-speed solid state drive that can be installed in the expansion slots of both PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition models. M.2 SSDs are available in both PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition models.
M.2 SSD storage can be used to download and copy PS5/PS4 games and media apps when installed in the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition, play PS5/PS4 games directly from M.2 SSD storage, and move games freely between storage devices. PS5/PS4 games can be played directly from the M.2 SSD storage, and games can be freely moved from one storage device to another.

To manage the amount of data used during mobile connectivity, you can select the video quality when using mobile data communication.
Remote play quality and connectivity may vary depending on your carrier's network environment.
● Next week, on September 24 (Fri.), the PS App will be updated worldwide, allowing users to view their friends' Share Screen screens together from the PS App.
● First, join the same voice chat with a friend who is playing on PS5 from your mobile device, and ask your friend who is using PS5 to share his/her screen with you. Note that only PS5 supports the distribution of screens via Share Screen.
The Android update will be distributed in phases, so it may take up to a week for the update to become available on your device.
