Square Enix releases new dungeon exploration RPG "Dungeon Encounters" for PS4/Switch/Steam on Thursday, October 14, 2021!

SQUARE ENIX will release its new dungeon exploration RPG "Dungeon Encounters" for PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and Steam on Thursday, October 14, 2021, the company announced today at "SQUARE ENIXPRESENTS TGS2021" held today. (*Both are available for download only; the Steam version will be available on Friday, October 15, 2021.

Dungeon Encounters" is a dungeon exploration RPG that pushes the envelope of simple game design. Based on a primitive design philosophy, visual expressions and presentation are kept to a minimum, allowing players to experience the fun of the game system itself.

As you explore the dungeon by making full use of your abilities, you will encounter various events indicated by hexadecimal numbers. Battles are also included in these events, and thrilling battles unfold against enemies with one or two unique characteristics. The most appealing aspect of this work is that it requires repeated trial and error in order to advance to deeper levels, and in the process, one can enjoy the pleasure of thinking independently.

Another of the game's main objectives is to traverse the map itself. Within the dungeon, there are also rare items, stranded companions, and enemies with low appearance rates, and there is a rich collection element in the search for these items. And what awaits the player at the deepest level, after overcoming numerous difficulties, can be found at .......

In this title, "obtaining items," "recovering HP," "replacing abilities," "weapon shop," "armor shop," etc., which are considered separate elements in general RPGs, exist as "events" on the map and are indicated by white numbers. Similarly, battles with enemies also exist on the map and are visualized with black numbers when the ability "Show Battle Numbers" is set. These events can be referred to at any time from each "book" on the menu screen if the conditions are met, and may help in the dungeon attack.

The battles in this title employ the Active Time Battle (ATB) system familiar from the "FINAL FANTASY" series. Based on the speed of each character, the attack and defense of friend and foe are conducted in real time*. The director of the game is the creator of this system, so you can enjoy the highly honed Active Time Battle in this game. (*Time can also be set to "wait," in which time stops when a command is selected.)

The map of this work consists of square cells separated by a vertical and horizontal grid, and the coordinates of the current location are displayed in the upper left corner of the screen; "ability points" are earned for every square in each level, so it is best to actively aim for the entire map. However, in the deeper levels, the squares themselves may be hidden, and traps may be set, so it is necessary to proceed with caution.

TGS2021 trailer for "Dungeon Encounters" is now available for viewing.

Developer's Message

Producer: Hiroaki Kato
When Hiroyuki Ito showed me a proposal for an RPG with a simple overall design, including the story and direction, but with an interesting system itself, my thought was, "If the system is interesting, wouldn't it sell better if I made an elaborate design? (laugh).
(Laughs) After several discussions, we came to the conclusion that the simple design would make it easier to grasp the situation, and that it would be a "fun to think about and an unlikely playing experience," where players would use the information in the game as hints and try to figure out how to attack the situation through trial and error.
The result was "Dungeon Encounters". It is the perfect game for those who enjoy RPGs, especially those who enjoy the system!

Director: Hiroyuki Ito
This is the first time in several years that I have been involved in the production of an "RPG.
I managed to remember how to make it and the necessary elements, and somehow arrived at the completion.
I think it turned out to be quite interesting, incorporating riddle solving, fill-in-the-blanks, double-speed play, and other features.
If you find yourself thinking, "I'm curious about this game," please give it a try.

Character Design: Ryuma Ito
My name is Ryoma Ito, and I was in charge of character design.
I designed every character in the hope that there would be as many characters as possible that players would like.
Cattle Call, the development company that created the 3D characters, did a wonderful job with the modeling and motion, and I hope that those who play along with the game will like the game.

Music Director: Nobuo Uematsu, Composer / Representative of Dog Ear Records, Inc. / Representative of Smile Please, Inc.
There have been many classical music pieces performed using synthesizers.
However, there are very few that are made entirely with multiple recordings of electric guitars, not synthesizers. Moreover, I think this is probably the first attempt to create BGM for a game.
Some people may raise an eyebrow when they hear "playing classical music on an electric guitar," but don't worry.
But don't worry. This is not classical music. This is "rock music" that uses classical music as its source material.
