Tokyo Game Show 2021】 "Shin Megami Tensei V," "Power Pro Kun," "Yu-Gi-Oh," "KOF," "Zero," "Megaton Musashi," and more!

Due to the new coronavirus, the Tokyo Game Show 2021 took an irregular format, opening to the press and influencers on September 30 and October 1 at Makuhari Messe, followed by an online general public event on October 2 and 3. Here is a report on what games were on display at this year's event, as well as a play-by-play report of some of the highlights from the various game makers.

Shin Megami Tensei V" (Atlus)

This is the latest title in Atlus' signature series. Excluding remakes and smartphone app games, this is the first completely new title in about five years, and is scheduled for release on November 11.

The map at the time of the test play looked like an abandoned building, and the button-press dash gives the impression of moving quite speedily. The game uses symbol encounters, which makes it easier to understand enemy appearance patterns than random encounters.

According to the booth manager's explanation, if you get behind an enemy symbol, it is possible to make a preemptive attack in battle. In addition, the main character is provided with the motion of swinging a light sword when a button is pressed in the map. This is not only effective against destructible objects on the map, but also means that even if an enemy notices and attacks you, you can force a preemptive attack by hitting the symbol with your sword at the right moment to start the battle.

Combat is conducted in the series' familiar "press turn battle" style. This is a system whereby the number of actions is increased by hitting the opponent's weak points, thus advancing the battle in an advantageous manner. This allows the player to advance in battle with an advantage. In the same series, it is important to take the first attack, but this time, you can take the first attack by meeting enemies with symbol encounters, so you will need to pay attention to your play style on the map, such as going around from behind or successfully fishing out enemies.

The battle graphics are eye-catching, with beautiful graphics of the characters, as this is a Nintendo Switch game. The camera work when using skills is also well done, with a minimal amount of time spent on the action.

A new element in this title is the "Magatsuhi Skill. This is a special skill that can be used by consuming the "Magatsuhi Gauge" that accumulates during battle.

Of course, there is also the series' customary "Demon Conversation," in which the player negotiates with his or her opponent during battle, and if all goes well, the two can be made "buddies" and added to the player's party. If negotiations break down and the player is in a bad mood, the battle may be at a disadvantage.

Shin Megami Tensei V, the first new title in five years, will be released on November 11. I highly recommend playing it, even if you are not a fan of the series.

Power Pro Kun Pocket R" ( KONAMI )

Scheduled for release on November 25, 2021, this title is a Nintendo Switch revival of "Pawapurokun Pocket" (Pawapoke), a game that spun off "Success," the original player development mode of the "Powerful Pro Baseball" (Pawapuro) series, which is one of Konami's signature titles. The title is a revival of "Pawapurokun Pocket" (Pawapoke), the original player development mode of the "Pawapuro" series.

The "Pawapoke" series, which ran until "Pawapurokun Pocket 14" released in 2011, is a baseball training game with challenging elements and an outlandish setting that is far removed from the baseball world. The "R" series has retained the same spirit and features a new training mode called "Cyber Bullets," in which players collect parts necessary to train players by defeating enemies in a tank game.

This mode is a training game that can be played by up to four players simultaneously, making it a party game as well. The selection criteria for each stage are completely random, and in addition to simple results such as the number of enemies defeated or targets destroyed, negative factors such as damage received from enemies may also be evaluated.

In addition to the popular "Kyoku-Aku High School" and "Drill Moglers" scenarios, which are the main successes in Power Poke, there is also a "War" scenario that will make any Power Poke fan cringe just by checking the wording of the game.

The game's commentator, who was commenting on the game, replied happily, "There is no baseball element in this game either, and you will have to survive a month on the battlefield. Fans can also expect to see popular video game distributors screaming at the unreasonable difficulty of the game, in addition to enjoying the game themselves.

Yu-Gi-Oh Master Duel (KONAMI)

Scheduled for release this winter, this software allows players to play the famous trading card game "Yu-Gi-Oh OCG" digitally.

Although the game is a competitive card battle, it has a "solo mode" that is friendly to beginners and returning players, such as those who are new to the Yu-Gi-Oh! series or those who have played before but want to play again after a long absence. In the trial playthrough, we were able to see three different storylines: "The Relic's Chosen One," "Warriors of the Bright Stone," and "The Giant Machine Shell," but more will be added to the game when it is released.

In the trial, we played "The Reliquary's Chosen One," and as we read through the scenario, duels (card battles) with churials and CPUs were interspersed. As you progress through the game, you will learn the basics of duels, such as card names, attributes, attack and defense, an explanation of magic and trap cards, and basic tactics for advancing duels, such as Fusion Summons and Advance Summons.

The King of Fighters XV (SNK)

A new playable character, Isla, was playable in the new "King of Fighters" series, SNK's signature title scheduled for release on February 17, 2022.

Isla is set up as a rival to Shun'ei, who appeared as the main character in the previous "XIV," but compared to Shun'ei, who was a well-balanced all-rounder in terms of both long-range and short-range attacks, Isla is an anomalous character, with aerial maneuver changes and flying weapons that take diagonal trajectories, etc. He is said to have the performance of a tricky character.

Ash Crimson, who was the main character from KOF 2003 to KOF XIII, is also expected to appear for the first time in many years.
