Vol. 38 SMP "Phibird, the Brave of the Sun

This time, "Armed Combination Phibird" from "Phibird the Brave of the Sun," which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2021, has been released by Bandai Candy Division's SMPseries, and here it is!

In the past few years, the Yusha series has been showing a sudden upsurge, with events such as the "Super Yusha Exhibition" being held, its information program "Super Yusha Information (MC: Yutaka Tai)" being distributed, and new products being released by various companies. The SMP "Armed Combination Fibird" has appeared in the midst of this momentum.

Let's take a look! Let's start with the package.

There are a total of three types in this series, but the packaging has the same design except for the numbering.

On the front is a newly drawn illustration of SMP "Armed Combination Phi Bird"!

On the back is an image of the play using CG and other materials.

On the top side is an image of an android (Yutaro Hidori) merging into Phibird.

The breakdown of the three types is as follows: 1 and 2 are enough to complete the normal Phibird, but we would still like to combine them.

Here is the composition of "1". There is only one sticker. The yellow parts are molded in gold color.

Contents of "2". The rear part of the fire jet. There are some painted parts.

3" contains Flame Breather, android parts, etc. The flame effect parts are very exciting!

As expected of a mecha that can transform and combine, the parts are very elaborate, and it took a surprisingly long time to assemble.

Therefore, I think it will be easier to complete it smoothly if you set a goal for each box and assemble them one by one.

And here is the finished product!

Fire Jet, Android, Android (small), Blame Breather, Flame Sword and effects, replacement wrists and head for appearance, and joint parts that should be kept in a safe place for future use in the planned Strongest Combination.

First is the Fire Jet.

The style of the play is well reproduced.

It seems that Dr. Amano did not design it to transform, but even while assembling it, I could hardly imagine how it would transform. It is a design that is hard to believe it is a toy! It is exciting.

The silhouette of the fuselage stretching from front to back gives the impression that it will easily exceed the speed of sound.

In contrast, from the rear, it looks very powerful.

There is a landing gear that can be opened and closed on the underside of the nose and rear of the fuselage!

As you can see, the landing gear firmly supports the fuselage. The fire jet is a surprisingly large fighter plane.

There is a joint hole on the underside of the center of the fuselage, so you can display it in flight with a commercially available base. It is also possible to display it as a solidly finished aircraft.

The cockpit canopy can be opened and closed, and an android (small) can be stored inside.

The armament deployment gimmick is concentrated in the rear, and missiles and cannons can be deployed.

The handle of the flame sword can be stored in the nose of the plane. This was also where the flame sword was stored during the play.

Next is the Flame Breather!

As a support fighter, it has a canopy that looks like a cockpit, but it was basically unmanned.

The canopy part will be attached to the waist when in Combined Armed Fibird Mode, so you can choose to have a non-clear part if you like.

A commercially available pedestal can be connected to the joint on the underside of the canopy, so the canopy can be displayed in flight mode.

Of course, the Flame Breather can be combined with the Fire Jet! It looks like a "heroic robot"!

Next up is Yutaro Hitori, an android. This is not directly related to the merging game, but this android moves very well.

The face can be assembled with or without painted eyes. In this case, we used the one with painted eyes.

The neck is very flexible with double ball joints.

The elbows can be bent deeply and the second arm has a roll axis.

The shoulder joints can be moved up and down and the arms can be raised quite high from horizontal to higher.

The chest can be flexed back and forth and slightly twisted under the chest, and the hips can rotate with an axis connection.

The legs can be opened to the left, right, front and back as well, as shown. The ankles also move widely for excellent ground contact.

The hip joint is connected to a ball joint, and the base can move up and down independently to the left and right. Roll axis on the thigh. Knees are pre-painted and can be bent nearly 180 degrees.

As you can see, dynamic action poses can be achieved by connecting a commercially available stand to the joints on the back.

Although I did not have many opportunities to fight with this figure, this kit moves surprisingly well.
Both the left and right wrists are included, as well as a slap hand with an expression on it.

The android also comes with a mini-sized version for transforming and combining, in two different colors but exactly the same shape.

Now it's time to start the transformation!

Fire-ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

The transformation has begun! Please watch the transformation scene as you imagine it from the anime. (The order may differ from the order in the instruction manual.)

Fold up the nose.

Raise the retracted head.

Separate the block in the center of the rear fuselage.

Connect the removed block to the top of the fuselage.

Turn over, unlock the left and right intake blocks, and fold 90°.

Fold the left and right main wings and vertical tail fins.

This is the view from below. Raise the toes and ......

Further extend toes and put both feet in position. Raise the knee parts.

Unfold the blocks from earlier to form both arms.

The structure of this "block" is very amazing! Be careful not to make mistakes in the assembly or transformation method.

The left side of the figure shows the arms once deployed, and the right side shows them deformed to one position before the combined position.

Fold down the front skirt, deploy the shoulder armor, rotate the arms and pull out the wrists.

"Haaaaah!

Teyah!"

Transform android (small)!

Combine the deformed androids into the chest. This time, the white one is combined.

Change!

Fybird!

On the next page, we'll try our hand at combining armaments!
