Mobile Suit Gundam U.C. ENGAGE Review! The numerous battles that unfolded in the space century are brought back to life!

On November 30, 2021, Namco Bandai Entertainment Inc. began distributing the smartphone app "Mobile Suit Gundam U.C. ENGAGE". This is a simulation game that brings together all the "Space Century Gundam" works of the past. Starting with "Mobile Suit Gundam," players can enjoy various generations of Gundam in a single title. In this article, we will review this title.

Story Mode" lets you follow the stories of successive "Gundam" titles

The "Story Mode" of quests is one of the main features of this title. Players can follow the stories of past Gundam titles while battling battles. The stories include "UC 0078-0082," "Mobile Suit Gundam 0083," "Mobile Suit Gundam 0083," "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin," character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's reconstruction of "Mobile Suit Gundam," "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin," and "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin," the series' origin story featuring Amuro Ray as the main character. Stardust Memory" and "Mobile Suit Z Gundam" are the focus of "UC 0083-0089," which are organized by time line of the "Space Century" (represented by "UC"), the calendar of the Gundam world.

At this point in time, the lineup also includes "Mobile Suit V Gundam," which depicts the most future of the Universe Century, and "Mobile Suit Moon Gundam," the first animated film adaptation of a Gundam game to be released in this title.

The protagonist of this work is a female pilot, Pesce Montagne. She is a Zeon soldier, a newtype candidate trained at the Flanagan Organization. The major axis of this work is the story of her journey through the era of the Space Century (......). Also, the existence of a new Gundam, "Engage Zero," has already been announced. We invite you to play the game and see for yourself how the new hero and new Gundam will play an active role in the game.

Each storyline includes anime footage from the time period and subtitled commentary to explain the story and worldview of the work, making it easy to get an overview of each Gundam work. This is a great way for "Gundam" newcomers to get acquainted with the series, and for fans to look back on those days.

In addition, the event scenes include new animation footage of each Gundam work that was created especially for the game. It is also possible to play the game for this.

However, the animation may consume a lot of space, and each time a quest is selected, a data download is interspersed. If you have enough free space on your smartphone, it would be a good idea to download the data in advance. The required capacity is approximately 2 GB.

The battles in this game are simulation-based and have tactical elements, but the battles themselves are all automatic. Those who just want to enjoy the story will be able to enjoy the game with peace of mind.

Attributes and placement of mobile suits are important in battles

In the battles of this title, players battle enemies by deploying "mobile suits" (hereinafter referred to as "MS"), humanoid weapons familiar from the "Gundam" series. MS have attributes such as "red," "blue," and "green," and attacking with an attribute favorable to the opponent will increase the damage dealt, while attacking with an attribute unfavorable will decrease it. The key to victory is to consider which attribute the enemy MS unit is composed of and organize and deploy a team that is advantageous to you. Most of the detailed movements, such as attacking and evading, are performed automatically by each MS, so all the player needs to do is prepare for battle.

On the battle preparation screen, MS organized for the player's team are placed on the map, which is divided into squares. The placed MSs are indicated by arrows as to which enemy they will target first. There are various ways to fight, such as selecting enemies with favorable affinities based on their attributes, or coordinating multiple allies to attack a single MS intensively.

During battle, the "DPS (damage per second)" is displayed on the screen to show how much damage is being inflicted on the enemy by each ally. It is interesting to adjust the attributes and placement of MSs slightly based on DPS, as you can always check whether your main MSs are working well or not. While the early quests are manageable even if DPS is ignored, as the difficulty level increases, tactics become more and more important.

Combat is presented in 3D. By switching the camera, you can focus on a specific MS or view the entire battlefield.

While most of the battle is left to the AI, the player can decide whether or not to use the "EX Skill" possessed by the MS, which is like a special move that can be activated when the gauge of the target MS is full. In addition to attacking the enemy, they have a variety of effects such as healing and strengthening allies, and the timing of their use will determine the outcome of the battle.

Combine aircraft and pilots to increase your fighting power

In this title, pilots can be placed on the MS of their choice, and the combination of the two is also important. In order to maximize the power of the MS, it is important to understand the performance of the pilot.

The battle system in this title, in which the player's skill in organizing and deploying the MS is crucial, allows even low-rarity MS to be used to their fullest potential. The appeal of this system is that it leaves room for even low-rarity MS to be effective in battle.

However, blueprints are basically unavailable unless the player re-acquires an MS that has already been acquired. The other means of obtaining blueprints, the "Piece Quest," is released when the player's rank reaches 30, so until then, the main focus will be on "modification" rather than "ability release.

Once a quest has been cleared, the battle can be skipped by using a ticket. This is convenient for circling when earning materials.

The game includes elements that newcomers and fans alike will enjoy, such as a detailed story mode that includes images and explanations of the original story, and a simulation battle system that is not all about rarity. Look for more announcements and updates in the future.
