Official Report (Original text)
On Saturday, February 5, a special live broadcast of "DEEMO Sakura no Oto -The Sound You Played Still Resonates-", an animation film based on the popular music game "DEEMO" which has been downloaded 28 million times worldwide, was held. director, Junkei Fujisaki, general director, and Naoki Yoshida (Nippon Broadcasting System announcer) attended the event! They discussed the highlights of the work, the characters, and episodes in the production process before the release of the film.
Sania, played by Ms. Kito, is an active high school girl in the class next to the heroine Alice (Ayana Taketatsu). Ms. Kito described Sania as "a bright and energetic girl who wears a school uniform and half pants and has short-cut hair. I have never played such a boyish girl before, so the role pulled me in and made me feel like a bright girl, so it was fun playing her. I am usually a quiet girl, but Sania is vivacious and can talk to quiet girls, which I admire.
Director Fujisaki said of Sania's existence, "(DEEMO) is a story that Alice is a part of, so I included her as a supporting character in the script. I thought that having a boyish character to liven up the everyday scenes would add a touch of glamour.
On the other hand, Rosalia, played by Ms. Sakura, is Sania's best friend. Sakura says, "If anything, she is quieter than Sania and follows her around. She makes up for what Sania lacks. Director Fujisaki said, "Sania tends to run, and if she is left alone she will get into trouble, so I thought it would be better to have someone who can act as a brake, someone who notices her. I felt like I was watching over her from behind.
Ms. Sakura commented on Ms. Kito's portrayal of Sania, saying, "I feel that there is a link between Ms. Kito and Sania. I am shy and don't talk at all when I am on set, but Akari was very aggressive toward me (Ms. Sakura) even though we had just met for the first time (laughs). (Laughs.) I saw Sania in that goofiness. When I first saw the cast list, I thought, "Isn't the casting of Sania and Rosalia reversed? But when I actually opened the lid, I found that it was like this," he says.
A duet by Ms. Kito and Ms. Sakura is also included in the soundtrack. Looking back on the recording, Ms. Kito said, "It is a very beautiful song with a lot of harmonizing! I recorded it first, so I sang it as I wanted to, like I was asking Ayane to "match it.
Ms. Sakura pointed to Mr. Kito and said, "He is a good singer. When we went for a drive, he sang all the way in the back seat, and his live singing was really good. (I watched the movie thinking, "Akari Kito has a great voice..." (The finished film). Akari Kito has a great voice. Akari Kito's voice is great, without any impurities. At the same time, Ayana's (Ayana Taketatsu) voice is also great, so I enjoyed the film in a fresh way, thinking how great it was with this atmosphere.
During the talk session, Director Matsushita and General Director Fujisaki also talked about the music aspect of the film. Director Matsushita commented on the choice of music for the film version, "It was very difficult. When you play the game, there are a lot of great songs, so it took a long time to choose which songs to use and how to fit them into the story. It took a long time. He also said that he and General Director Fujisaki had heated discussions while selecting the songs, and that "some of the songs changed during the editing process. Ms. Sakura spoke again about the music of the film, "The quality of the music is high, and it seems to spread out, and I realized that the power of sound is really amazing," she said sincerely.
When we asked Mr. Kito and Ms. Sakura about their impressions of the completed film, Mr. Kito enthusiastically replied, "There is a story, but in addition, you can listen to the beautiful music all the way through! Ms. Sakura said, "I have a very silly lacrimal gland (laugh), but I cried a lot. I was expecting to be moved, but even with all that preparation, I cried..." Ms. Sakura expressed her excitement, saying, "I have a pretty stupid lacrimal gland (laugh), but I cried a lot. I was moved to tears. He added, "I was... Deemo is my type. I liked it so much that after it was over, I thought, "What am I going to do? But I don't know how to push Deemo..." I was like.... I had never seen it move like this before, and I was like, "It moves like this? Crikey! I was like, "Oh my God! There were so many things I couldn't understand without the pictures and music, I was so moved! I was so moved!
Director Matsushita was very happy to hear their impressions and said, "I am very happy. I wanted to emphasize the importance of the music, so I hope that the audience could feel that," he said with joy. Director Fujisaki explained, "I wanted the music to stand out, so I didn't put too much information in the pictures." Director Matsushita added, "I wanted to give the audience time to listen to the music, so I didn't move around too much.
Fujisaki, who also wrote the script, had a difficult time finding the right balance between "developing the story" as a scriptwriter and "delivering the work with responsibility" as a general director. He also said with a wry smile, "I wanted to deliver the work to the world, so I had to cut the script I wrote, saying that it was unusable. The good part was that he was persistent, but I asked him (as general director) to give up on the parts he couldn't give up on.
Director Matsushita mentioned Deemo's piano playing scene as one of the "sticky" parts, saying, "We tried to match the sound (finger movements and sound), but it was difficult. I thought I could do something like motion capture, but Deemo's fingers were too long and it didn't work. But it's a music film, and it's called DEEMO, so I knew I couldn't escape that part, and I wanted to do my best," she said, expressing her persistence for the scene.
At the end of the live broadcast, General Director Fujisaki said, "It's been a long time coming, but we are finally able to deliver what we have worked so hard to make as good a film as possible. I hope you will watch it several times and experience the gentle world of "DEEMO"." Director Matsushita added, "Whether you are a fan of the original game or not, I hope you will watch it. The music is wonderful, so I hope you will go see it as if you were going to see a piano concert at the theater.
Mr. Kito said, "The game has been loved for a very long time, and now it has become a movie, and you can listen to the songs you used to listen to on your smartphone in a movie theater, and the story will make you cry. I hope you will come to the theater and enjoy it!
Ms. Sakura said, "When you look at the world view, the PV or the key visuals, you may think that it is like a fairy tale, cute, fragile, and has a wonderful atmosphere. However, this work has more than just that. Toward the end, there are heart-wrenching developments and epic developments, so please don't be fooled by the cute atmosphere. I am happy that I was able to breathe life into the film with all my might, and I hope that many people will watch it.
The film version of "DEEMO Sakura no Oto -The Sound You Played Still Resonates-" will be released on February 25 (Fri.).
