■What is "Fullmetal Alchemist"?
A dark fantasy manga series by Hiromu Arakawa, serialized in the monthly "Shonen Gangan" magazine from the August 2001 issue to the July 2010 issue. It is one of Japan's most popular manga series, selling more than 80 million copies worldwide, and has been adapted into anime twice, in 2003-2004 and 2009-2010, and a live-action movie in 2017.
The story is set in a fictional world where alchemy exists. Brothers Edward and Alphonse want to see their mother who died when they were young, so they perform alchemy's greatest taboo, human body smelting, to bring back a dead person to life. However, the alchemy fails. Edward loses his left leg and Alphonse loses his entire body. Edward barely succeeded in fixing his brother Alphonse's soul in his armor in exchange for his own right arm, but both brothers had to bear a heavy price.
Edward and Alphonse set out on a journey to find the "Philosopher's Stone," a fantastic magical amplifier, in order to regain their lost bodies.
Edward has been given the nickname "Fullmetal Alchemist," perhaps because of his appearance, in which his right arm and left leg have been replaced with steel prosthetics called "automail.
