Today's release] The latest in the Gran Turismo series! A review of Gran Turismo 7, which pursues a more realistic car life and more friendly features!

On Friday, March 4, 2022, the realistic driving simulator Gran Turismo 7 was released by Sony Interactive Entertainment (SEE). This title is the latest in the Gran Turismo series and is the culmination of the technology that the series has developed over the past 25 years. In this article, we would like to share with you a review of this title that we played just before its release. For the purposes of this review, we played the "Café," which is the campaign mode of the game, all the way through.

The game revolves around a base where various facilities are gathered.

In this title, the game is based on a base where several facilities are gathered. These include "World Circuit," which contains courses from around the world; "Café," which is the campaign mode; "Used," which sells used cars; "Brand Central," where you can buy cars from 2001 onward; and "Tuning Shop," where you can find parts for your car.

Most of the facilities are locked at the beginning of the game, so it is necessary to advance through the café first. In the café, players complete tasks written in the "menu book," and as a reward, facility functions are released or a car is given to the player. Most of the assignments involve collecting specific cars, either by participating in races where cars are awarded for top finishes, or by purchasing them from stores in the base. While buying is easier, the alternative is to spend the in-game currency "credits" like hot water. Since it is easy to run out of money to put into customization if you buy every time, I personally recommend racing as a way to practice driving as well.

While some facilities are released, the appeal of the café lies in the fact that you can learn about cars. While completing tasks earns you rewards, you can also ask Luca about topics common to the cars he has collected, such as "Nissan sports cars" and "Mustangs.

He will summarize the year the car was launched, its racing record, the number of cars sold, and its impact on the world, making it interesting even for someone like me who is not familiar with cars. In addition to specific stories, the book also includes contemporary and early 20th century photos where necessary, making it a worthwhile read. Rather than simply emphasizing the car enthusiast, the book even considers how to convey the appeal of the cars to a wider audience, and one can sense the enthusiasm on the part of the developers.

Cars that have been acquired can be viewed in an "illustrated book. The history and features of the cars are described in detail, making them valuable as reference materials.

The café is a teaching mode where you can learn about driving and the history of cars through the game. The game does not have you race around the world as a racing driver, so if you are expecting a full-blown racing game, you may find it a bit of a letdown. However, it will teach you about cars in a gentle and in-depth way, and in that sense, Gran Turismo 7's "Cafe" mode is suitable for car enthusiasts and beginners alike.

Immersive feeling created by realistic image quality and driving

Gran Turismo 7, which claims to be a realistic driving simulation, allows players to enjoy races that thoroughly mimic reality. With the help of many advisors, including legendary F1 driver Lewis Hamilton, the behavior of the cars during races and the effects of climate and wind direction are recreated in the game.

The weather changes in real time, so the rain that was falling on the track may stop halfway through the race, and the speed at which puddles dry up in some places varies. Raindrops left on the car body and the movement of the gauges inside the car could also be confirmed. Since I played the PS4 version, I was not able to see the "ray tracing" (a technology that reflects light reflections) that is implemented in the PS5 version, but I was still able to fully appreciate the high image quality and texture of this work.

A total of 34 different courses are available, ranging from real ones to original "Gran Turismo" courses.

In other words, the driving requires the same technique as in real life, and rough controls can be fatal in a race. As it had been a long time since I had played a real racing game, I had to first correct my habit of drifting around curves at maximum speed. He would slow down before the turn and accelerate just before the turn. Such a technique may seem trivial at first glance, but in reality, it requires delicate movements.

If the driver makes a mistake in braking and steering according to the angle of the corner, he will be off the course in no time. If the driver tries to make up the time lost by accelerating as hard as possible, the sudden acceleration makes it difficult to turn the corner. If there was a right-angle or sharper corner, he would have to proceed as slowly as if he were going slowly down an alley in a residential area. Even on gentle curves, the slightest jolt at excessive speed can throw the car off balance and send it spinning. During the race, one cannot let one's guard down even for a moment.

The Nürburgring is one of the most difficult courses in the world, and the "North Course," one of the two types of courses, is approximately 20 km long.

After repeated trial-and-error, the AI cars began to move in the same way as the other AIs, whom they wanted to overtake as many as possible, and the fact that they took corners at specific angles and speeds was not a compromise or an indulgence, but rather a necessary technique to shorten their time. There is no point in changing the driving style; the fundamentals are the strongest. This game is not a deformation of driving, but a realistic pursuit of driving, which is why we were able to arrive at this result.

The game is also a game in which the player can experience the tension of being "swallowed" by the other driver's pace or being unable to display his or her true potential as a result of being nervous about the atmosphere. If you catch up with the lead pack in the latter half of the last lap and get greedy and try to overtake them in the corners, you will not be able to win. As soon as I accelerated, the balance I had maintained up to that point was instantly lost, the car spun, and my internal pace was disrupted. It is very difficult to regain the rhythm once you have lost it, and from my point of view, if I had done it on the last lap, I would have to start over immediately.

If you are conscious of being in first place, you will not be in first place. This work made me realize the importance of keeping one's own pace. In the challenges given at the café, the number of powerful cars increased in the latter half of the race, and it became more difficult to overtake them, which I was able to do in the early stages, and the mistakes mentioned above tended to increase.

In dirt races, you drive on unpaved roads. Unlike circuits, they are slippery and it is difficult to control the car. It is also possible to drift and jump depending on the speed, which can be an appealing feature of intense driving!

The tension is even greater when driving on a course that has been rained on and turned "wet. The slippery surface makes acceleration and deceleration difficult. When driving with dry racing tires, the car will sway from side to side even in loose corners. Changing to wet tires provides more grip and makes maneuvering much easier, but it is still difficult because the spray from the lead car can block your view.

However, the fact that the driver is able to maintain such a state and continue to drive means that he or she has a considerable amount of ability, and it is gratifying to feel that he or she has grown. Whether the sense of reality pursued to create a realistic race is more immersive or stressful depends on the individual, but for me at least, it was a nice element that allowed me to immerse myself in the world.

A variety of modes and functions for beginners

In addition to the finesse required for driving, this title also includes many elements for those who are not good at racing games.

In "License," one of the bases of the game, players race according to various goals. This mode is designed for those who are just starting out in racing, and includes everything from the basics, such as starting and stopping, to techniques such as how to turn at different angle corners and how to drive on dirt roads.

Each objective is divided into fairly short sections that can be completed in less than a minute each, making them quite easy to complete. There are five levels, ranging from Domestic B to Super License, and the levels are completed in order, starting with B. To advance to a higher level, you must complete all the goals for that level. In order to advance to a higher level, one must pass the graduation exam while completing all the objectives for that level.

In other words, if you are good enough to pass the graduation exam, you can certainly go on to the next license. The player can gradually move up to the next level as he or she feels his or her skills improve. For each goal, there is a gold, silver, or bronze badge for each clear time, and if you win a bronze or gold license, you can get a car as a reward. Beginners are encouraged to try out the "missions" to collect cars and train for the next level.

In the "Mission" section, players complete the conditions presented to them. It is similar to the license, but this is more for real-world competition. It is also a good way to test your skills.

There are many assist functions while driving. Assist settings include "for beginners," "for intermediate drivers," and "for advanced drivers. The "for beginners" setting automatically helps the rider brake in the proper position and steer too far. In addition, markers can be displayed to indicate where to brake and where to run. If you are not confident, it would be a good idea to use the assistance for beginners first to get used to it.

However, there are limits to how much the AI can compensate, so if you are concerned about your driving time, you may want to at least turn off the brake and steering wheel assist. The assist functions can be set individually for each item, so it is recommended to decide according to your own play style. In the author's case, he turned off the brake and steering wheel corrections as soon as possible, leaving only the car positioning and brake location markers.

Customize your car body by combining various parts.

The tuning store at the base offers more than 60 different parts. There are five categories: "Sports," "Club Sports," "Semi-Racing," "Racing," and "Extreme," and basically in that order the parts with higher performance are sold. At first, you can only buy sports-type parts, but as you collect cars and raise your "Collector's Level," they are gradually released.

Changing parts raises or lowers the "PP" of the car; PP stands for performance points and indicates the performance of the car. Basically, the higher this is, the faster the car is. Although there is a list of detailed items such as total displacement, maximum torque, and power-to-weight ratio, at least when we completed the last task in the café, we had no problem giving priority to PP anyway.

GT Auto" allows for bodywork adjustments. Deteriorated engine oil and car bodies can be replaced.

In "Car Settings," you can replace the parts you got and make even finer adjustments. The suspension can be retrofitted, the ride height can be changed in 1-memory increments, and the position of aerodynamic parts attached to the front and rear of the car body can be changed. These adjustments affect PP and the feel of the car when driving. In order to shorten driving times and compete with the world in online play, you will need to precisely tune the car to suit your car and your own style. However, since this is an area that requires a lot of work, we would like to start by familiarizing ourselves with the larger aspects of customizing the parts.

However, there are entry requirements for races in this title, and some of them have a PP limit; if a car is caught in a race with a PP limit, it cannot be used in that race. However, by using "ballast" and "power restrictors" sold at tuning stores, the PP can be lowered by increasing weight and reducing engine output. Players who want to go with a single strengthened car can also rest assured.

The "Scapes" feature allows users to take photos of their cars, with more than 2,500 photo spots to choose from, as well as fine-tuning of effects and direction.

This series has a 25-year history as a simulator and racing game, but Gran Turismo 7 does not rest on its laurels. Assist functions and licenses make it easy for beginners to play, while the realistic driving elements and numerical tuning make it challenging for advanced players. This is the culmination of the series, and we hope you will give it a try.

(We hope you will enjoy this title, which is the culmination of the series.)
