Mobile Suit Gundam: The Island of Cruz Doan" Red Comet Char appears! Illustration by Atsushi Tamura, Chief Animation Supervisor, Shia & Shia Zakui!

From "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Island of Cruz Doan," which will be shown nationwide on June 3, 2022 (Friday), it was announced that the Red Comet, Char Aznable, will appear in the film, a <new element> not depicted in the 15th episode of the TV series.

The 15th episode of "Mobile Suit Gundam," the milestone of Japanese robot animation and the origin of Gundam, "The Island of Cruculus Doan," was broadcast in 1979. The episode, known as a masterpiece among fans, drew fans' attention with its depiction of the melancholy of war through the interaction between the main character, Amuro Ray, and Doan, a deserter from the Zeon army, who is the antagonist.

Directed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, character designer and animation director of the "Mobile Suit Gundam" TV series and creator of the hit "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin," which has sold over 10 million copies. Other famous staff members have also been assembled.

The "Red Comet" and Char Aznable, a "new element" not depicted in episode 15 of the TV series, will appear in the movie, and a comment from Director Yasuhiko explaining the reason for the "new" addition has arrived!

In addition, a "special visual" by Atsushi Tamura, character designer and chief animation director, and a setting drawing of Char's exclusive High Mobility Type Zaku II were also released.

Char Aznable is a military officer of the Principality of Zeon who was feared by the Earth Federation Forces to which the main character Amuro Ray belongs.
He did not appear in the 15th episode of the TV anime, "The Island of Cruz Doan," but we wonder what he will do in the movie.

By introducing the long-loved character Char Aznable, we are able to please not only fans but also many other people. I also thought that having Shuichi Ikeda participate in the film would further enhance the charm of the work, so I added a new drawing to "The Island of Cruz Doan".

Character Designer and Chief Animation Director: Atsushi Tamura!

To commemorate this release, a gorgeous new illustration by Atsushi Tamura, who is the chief animation director and character designer of the film, has been released.

The illustration depicts a smiling Char Aznable and behind him is Char Zaku, known as the "Red Comet. The illustration is wrapped in a colorful background, creating a fantastic finish.

After working as an exclusive animator for Studio Ghibli, he is now freelance. He has worked on "Gundam G Reconguista" ('14-) and "Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin" series for Sunrise. He also participated in other high-profile works such as "Doraemon: Nobita's Treasure Island" ('18) and "The Deer King: Yuna and the Journey of Promise" ('22), and worked as character designer and animation director on "Weather Child" ('19).
And in this film, he serves as character designer and chief animation director.

＜Story

Amuro and his White Base team, preparing for the Odessa Operation, are assigned to a mission to clear an uninhabited island called "Island of No Return" of remaining counter-intelligence personnel (soldiers who remain in enemy territory to conduct subversive espionage activities, etc.). While conducting a search, Amuro encounters a Zaku and is taken prisoner. When Amuro wakes up, he sees a man who calls himself "Cruz Doan" and 20 children.
