Signature Present! Character relay interview for "swing,sing", a new content of healing and music connected with jazz and cafes! Part 2: Momose Momoshi

A new project, "swing,sing", is a series of interviews with the characters to support the start of the project. This is a series of interviews with the characters of "swing,sing" to support the start of the project!

swing, singing" is a graffiti of youth amidst the aroma of jazz and coffee, set in the cafe "Primrose" in the resort town of Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture.

Violet Yaotome, a student at a music school in the city, transfers to a school in Karuizawa to escape the busy city life. When she arrives at her lodgings, the Primrose Cafe, she is asked by Momose Momo, the owner of the cafe, to help her save the cafe, which is on the verge of bankruptcy.

Violet and her friends take up instruments left behind by Momose's grandfather, the former owner, and play music as they aim for a loan on the café.

Aki Izumi, who has worked on numerous contents, will write the original story, while Hirotaka Hayakawa, a composer who won the Record Award in 2018, will produce the music, Eito Higashiyama will design the characters, and Toriyaro, who will make his commercial debut with this work, will do the comic book adaptation.

Starting with the unveiling event to be held on May 29, 2022, the manga serialization will begin, and the digital release of the overall song "Harmony" and character songs will start simultaneously. In order to support this work, which has various live events scheduled in the future, Akiba Research Institute has started a series of interviews with the main characters and a present project!

In the second installment of this series, we meet Momo Momose, a brass player who also owns the cafe "Primrose.

Please introduce yourself.

Momo Momose (Momo ) My name is Momo Momose! I am a sophomore at Shin-Karuizawa High School and my birthday is April 25. I am the owner of a café called "Primrose" in Kyu-Karuizawa!

You inherited Primrose from your grandfather, right?

Momoshi: Yes. My grandfather used to run the café, and I used to play there from when I was little. There were many customers back then and it was a very famous café in this area, but since my grandfather passed away, there has been nothing going on. ...... I have to work harder. ......

─ ─ Since you are here, please tell the people watching this interview about the charm of Primrose.

Hyakko: What? Well, ...... Primrose is a great place to enjoy coffee with music, unlike ordinary coffee shops! We run it with only high school students, so there are a lot of troubles,...... but we all do our best from the bottom of our hearts to make people want to come back again, even if only for a short while!

─ Do you have any hobbies?

Momoshi: Cleaning and music. Recently, I have been organizing records left by my grandfather! I have a lot of records that I remember listening to with my grandfather when I was little, and I like to organize them while reminiscing.

Sometimes I come across some memories that I don't really want to show people. ......

─ I heard that you are also good at making coffee.

Momoshi: That's what my grandfather used to tell me. Sumire-chan drinks it so deliciously that I do my best to study it every day (laughs). Everyone at Primrose has slightly different tastes. ...... Sumire-chan likes Guatemala and Kilimanjaro. I brew Colombian for Himali, Mandarin for Ruri, and Earl Grey for Yuri. I drink my own Primrose blend, which is mainly mocha.

───Then tell us about the instruments you play and what attracts you to them.

Momoshi: I am in charge of the brass section in Primrose. I often play trumpet or tenor saxophone. The charm ...... charm or ....... It's an instrument that uses your breath, so it shows up in the sound the most. ...... You can never make the same sound,......, I guess I sound a bit like a violet,.......

───Please tell us about your encounter with jazz and why you were attracted to it.

Hyakko: At first I didn't think it was jazz. I just thought it was something my grandfather would play. So it wasn't until I joined the brass band in junior high school that I realized that this was jazz (laughs). (laughs) I was drawn to jazz because it was the music that made me who I am and brought me up from a young age.

─ ─ Do you have any masterpieces that you would like to recommend?

Momoshi: This may be a bit meek, but I like "Sing, Sing, Sing" by ...... the best! It's famous for being played by Benny Goodman's band, but my grandfather had a cherished SP record of the New Orleans Gang that can be found at ....... I don't really know what it is, but anyway, he said it was a great old record. ...... It said "gang" on it, so when I was little I asked, "Are these bad people playing?" I asked him if it was a gang, and he said that in the old days, a group or an organization was called a gang. It was a little embarrassing. ...... (laughs). I have many memories of this song, including stories like that and what my grandfather valued!

─ I heard that various players gather at the Primrose Cafe to perform. How do you like playing at the cafe?

Momo: At first it was just me and Sumire, but Yuri, Ruri, and many other people started coming, and it's been fun every day! Recently, I've been getting session suggestions from customers, and I hope it will become a place where everyone can play with a smile.

─ Do you have any ambitions or dreams for the future in terms of your musical activities?

Momoshi: Thanks to everyone, the number of customers is increasing little by little, but I still don't have the understanding of my mother, so I'm still working on ....... I would like to make Primrose a more enjoyable café, a place where even the grandfathers who watch over us can smile and laugh in peace. So someday, I would love for my mom to hear us play.

─ ─ Finally, do you have any comments for the readers of Akiba Research Institute?

Momoshi: Hmmm, I don't know what to say. ...... Oh, please come to Karuizawa! There are many delicious restaurants, and besides Primrose, there are also wonderful cafes and coffee roasting places. It is a very nice place where you can relax and feel at home. I'll be waiting for you at Primrose.
