Annecy International Animated Film Festival WIP Stage Report

Director Naoko Yamada and Producer Choi Woonyoung of Science SARU appeared on the "WIP" stage at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, which was held at Salle Pierre Lamy from 14:00 local time on Wednesday, June 15 (19:00 Japan time). WIP = Work in Progress is a special stage where the creators themselves talk about their works in the form of a talk with the MC about their current projects in progress. It is a high-profile event held annually in Annecy, and this year 15 filmmakers selected from around the world took the stage. Tickets for the limited 150 seats available for participation were sold out within minutes of the start of advance reservations. The stage started amidst the growing enthusiasm of the audience and was greeted with loud applause and cheers from the participants.

The work presented at this year's WIP was "Garden of Remembrance. This original work by director Yamada will be released in 2023, and was unveiled on the occasion of the WIP stage.

The project started with "music. The project started when Mr. Unyoung asked Director Yamada if he would like to produce a short film with music as its core. While nothing had yet been decided on the music, Director Yamada, who loves music and listens to a variety of genres, mentioned Lovely Summer, whom he describes as "an invincible girl. Director Yamada, whose own films have often been described as "feminine films" but have never really caught on, chose Lovely Summer as the artist he wanted to tackle "girliness" head-on. The concept for this film was also based on keywords that the two of them came up with, which were then put together to form a single poem. From there, the director created the film and Lovely Summer-chan created the music, revealing the backstage of the production process.

Director Yamada asked manga artist Etsuko Mizusawa to draft original characters to appear in the film. She described the appeal of the girls in Mizusawa's drawings as follows: "I can feel the scent that is typical of living girls. She sublimates the smell of drool from sleeping and wakes up in bed into a very cute image of a girl with a sense of life," said Director Yamada. In designing the characters, Yamada says that he repeatedly ordered them to be "whip-smart." However, since the theme of the film is cool, "Someone is thinking about someone else, and I wonder where their heart goes," he contrasted the backgrounds and characters with "beautiful and pretty colors," and "they look tasty. He also said that he paid particular attention to "pretty and pretty colors" and "looking delicious" for the backgrounds and characters.

At this point, part of the film of the production process was shown for the first time in the world! The film, about 1 minute and 20 seconds long, was shown and the venue was instantly colored into the world of "Garden of Remembrance". When the screening was over, the audience applauded loudly.

In closing, Director Yamada said, "I am very happy to be here in Annecy! I will continue to work hard on my films, so thank you very much for your support! Mr. Eunyoung called out to the audience, "See you at Annecy! and the audience responded with cheers.

Garden of Remembrance" will be released in 2023!
