In times like these, I wanted to make an anime that young people could work hard at! Director Yoshiyuki Tomino's words toward the conclusion of the theatrical version of "G no Reconguista" (Anime Industry Watching No. 90)

Director Yoshiyuki Tomino's theatrical version of "G no Reconguista" (a.k.a. "G-RECO"), a five-part film based on the TV series, will be released in July and August 2022, with "IV" "Gekitou ni Shouting Love" and "V" "Shirei wo Koukaeru" (Crossing the Frontier) to bring the series to its conclusion. In "IV," the climactic battle scene has been newly depicted, and the spirited battle between mobile suits, which has never been seen in any of the previous films, is guaranteed to take the viewer's breath away.
According to Director Tomino, the powerful battle scenes are the result of the animators' proactive drawing ability. The director talks about entertainment, the animation industry, and finally, he makes an outrageous proposal! This is a must-read interview.

I wanted to make a work that I could leave to my grandchildren because I have no choice but to despair of mankind now. ......

─ ─ Last night, I saw "OVERMAN King Gainer" (2002) for the first time in a long time. ......

Tomino, why are you watching that now!

─ ─ Because I happened to be writing a column about it. The backbone of "King Gaynor" is environmental issues and civilization theory, isn't it? Director Tomino has been searching for a theory of civilization for a long time, and "G-RECO" is the latest form of that search, isn't it?

Tomino: Yes, it became clear to me around the time of "Tribe Gundam" (1999) that I was definitely lacking in talent as a caricaturist. So I decided that I could not write a play as good as Koki Mitani's because of the structure of my mind and my senses, which would not allow me to create a work without such themes (the global environment and the state of civilization). (It may be true that my works have become monotonous (due to the theme of civilization). However, looking at the events leading up to the current war, one can only despair for mankind. What I have been worrying about since "Mobile Suit Gundam" (1979) is only going to become more pronounced. I can die in less than 10 years, but those who have to live for the next 50-60 years will feel terrible. I have three grandchildren, and I have a great sense of urgency about how bad they will be .......
When I started thinking about "G-RECO" 10 years ago, I was just beginning to have grandchildren, so I wanted to make sure that I included in the film what they should know as they grow up. I also did not want to make a depressing work because the real world is so harsh.
If it was an extension of the "Gundam" series, it would be a work of ostracism, so I realized that people might be able to change if they could jump back in time by 3,000 years. If it is a story about re-creating the world anew from there, I might be able to create a work that young people can work hard on. ...... But to tell the truth, I want to make it a simple story of a prince and a princess without such a theme. Because, by its very nature, entertainment is about having fun without thinking about difficult things, isn't it?

─ ─ The characters in "G-reco" are all optimistic and positive.

Tomino: If you don't make the characters that cheerful, they will only become serious. It's a little too slapstick, but I also intend to use that as a counterpoint.

─ ─ The tempo of "IV," "Ai wo Kekkon ni Yell Ai," is so fast-paced that I was able to watch it all the way through without being distracted by the dialogues.

Tomino: I myself am a person who watches movies without paying much attention to the dialogue. Even in foreign films where I can't understand the dialogue, I can always tell the difference between a good film and a bad film. In other words, the most important thing in movies is a sense of rhythm. Since I cannot write the lines of a play, I placed even more importance on the sense of rhythm.

Tomino──There was a bit of an atmosphere as if we were watching a foreign film.

Tomino Well, I don't know about that. We are not smart enough to calculate that much. Besides, the current staff has worked on five "G-RECO" films in a row, so some of the work is done by hand. But that also means that the staff understands what I have failed to do. So, I've reopened my mind and said, "What's wrong with my habits?" I am not an amateur, but a seasoned veteran. We are not amateurs; we are a staff of veterans.
