Animage and the Ghibli exhibition
A magazine that connects creators and viewers:
This exhibition focuses on the magazine "Animage" (Tokuma Shoten) from its first issue in 1978 to the 1980s.
More than 40 years ago, there was a time when animation took a great leap forward. Young anime fans were enamored with "Space Battleship Yamato," "Mobile Suit Gundam," and other works. Animage" was the magazine that conveyed the real words of the creators of these works.
The catchphrase between the creators and viewers connected by the magazine led to the rise of animation in Japan, a trend that continues to this day.
This is the magazine where Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki met:
Animage, which has discovered many animation creators, met two talents, Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki.
The movie "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" was born from the serialization of "Animage. The first film "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" was produced by Studio Ghibli, a new venue for the creation of works that they were satisfied with. Then came "Grave of the Fireflies" and "My Neighbor Totoro," both directed by Takahata and Miyazaki.
Animage" was a magazine, but it also delivered the works of these two directors and their words to the viewer.
This is another story of the birth of Studio Ghibli:
There was once a time when magazine production and animated film production were very close. This exhibition looks back on the role that the magazine "Animage" played in the birth and development of many animated films, through a rich display of magazine pages and valuable production materials.
In doing so, it shows that the same spirit of the people who created "Animage" also founded Studio Ghibli, which continues to deliver works to the present day.
About Animage...
Launched on May 26, 1978, "Animage" (Tokuma Shoten) was Japan's first full-fledged commercial anime magazine and monthly publication. As a pioneer in animation magazines, it has responded to the needs of fans by taking a close-up look at the inside of the industry, the artists, and those involved in production, who until then were never in the limelight as the people behind the works, and by including on-the-scene photos and interviews that give a behind-the-scenes look at the production process.
The magazine, which helped to establish Studio Ghibli with the animated film adaptation of "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," will celebrate its 45th anniversary in 2023, and continues to serve as a bridge between animation and its fans.
