On December 9, 2022, "Dragon Quest Treasures: Aoki Hitomi to Ozora no Rashinban" ("DQ Treasures"), a completely new spin-out of the "Dragon Quest" series, finally went on sale. As a completely new spin-out of the well-known national RPG "Dragon Quest" series, many gamers may have been paying attention to this title for some time. This time, we had a chance to play "DQ Treasures" earlier than expected, and we would like to share our impressions with you. Please note that this article is based on a pre-release version of the game.

In a mysterious, monster-filled world, the treasure-hunting adventures of Camus and Maya, two close siblings, begin!

DQ Treasures" is a new type of treasure life RPG that takes place in the world of "Dragon Quest. The main characters in this title are Camus and Maya, a brother and sister with striking blue hair and blue eyes. The two are the childhood versions of Camus and Maya, who appeared in "Dragon Quest XI: The Search for a Time Gone By," which is a nice touch for fans of the series. In addition, many other familiar monsters, items, and music from the "Dragon Quest" series appear in the film, making it a work full of exciting elements for fans of the series.

Let's start with the story of "DQ Treasures.

The story begins when Camus and Maya, who live on a Viking ship, meet the mysterious spirits Mewsha and Tombou one night. Guided by the spirits, they obtain the "Dragon's Dagger" and wander into the legendary "Land of the Boundless Dragon," where many treasures are said to lie.

Camus and Maya are now able to communicate with monsters through the power of the "dragon dagger," and are asked by Mucha and Tombou to help them search for the legendary "Seven Dragonstones," a treasure that lies in the "Land of the Limpid Dragon. The two are elated to accept the request, as it is the treasure hunt they have dreamed of for so long. Thus begins the great treasure-hunting adventure of Camus and Maya. ...... is the rough outline of the first part of this work. The author was quickly drawn into the story through a series of exciting twists and turns, including a mysterious event, a mysterious encounter, a journey to another world, and the revelation of a legendary treasure. ...... The world setting, which skillfully tickles the adventurous spirit, and the unique characters of the "Dragon Quest" series are indeed a must-see.

The many characters that make up the exciting story of this title are also a must-see.

First, there are the main characters, Camus and Maya. Camus, the curious and sisterly older brother, and Maya, the energetic and competitive younger sister, dream of finding an amazing treasure. The lively and friendly banter between the two is sure to bring a smile to your face.

In addition to Camus and Maya, there is also Mewsha, a cat-like spirit, and Tomboo, a pig-like spirit, who guide the two, as well as their "group" of friends and the members of the Gingira Pirates and Sylph Explorers, who are active in "The Land of the Boundless Dragon. The story is filled with many characters, all of whom have their own unique personalities. All of them have their own unique personalities, and interacting with them is one of the most enjoyable parts of playing this title.

Easy-to-use, exhilarating action battles! Join forces with your fellow monsters to win the battle!

In this title, players enter action battles by approaching monsters in the field. Players can perform four main types of actions: melee attacks with a dagger, long-range attacks with a sling, jumping, and evading. All attacks and evasions can be controlled with a single button, so even those who are not very good at action can enjoy the game with ease.

The two characters, Camus and Maya, are controlled by the player, but there is no difference in their abilities, so players can choose the one they like best. Switching between Camus and Maya can be done at any time from the base.

The most distinctive feature of the battles in this title is the "fight alongside your fellow monsters" system.
Players can bring up to three of their fellow monsters from among the members of Camus and Maya's group, and these monsters will take the lead in battles. Players can choose to fight alongside their friends, attack from a distance, or leave the monsters to their own devices and go off on their own. Slingshots can also be used to heal or strengthen companions, so you can also use them to support your fellow monsters.

When attacking or taking damage during battle, the "Romance Gauge" displayed at the bottom of Camus & Maya's face graphics accumulates. When the gauge is full and the stock is 1 or more, press and hold the R button, and then press the A, B, X, or Y button to perform a special move called a "Romance Technique" on the corresponding monster or hero.

The Romance Moves of fellow monsters vary depending on the monster's race, but they are all powerful and can inflict heavy damage on the enemy, so it is important to save your gauge for boss battles or battles with large monsters. The slime tribe's "Meteor Strike," which transforms into a giant and charges at enemies from above, and the drakey tribe's "Shooting Star," which transforms into a giant and sends meteors down around it like meteors, are all romantic moves that are fun and exhilarating to watch when they are activated.

On the other hand, when Camus and Maya activate their romantic moves, they enter a state called "Beast Mode. When in Beast Mode, Camus and Maya draw on their inner wild power and all their abilities are boosted for a while. In addition to making it easier to defeat enemies, their movement speed also increases, which can be used for exploration. The key to success will be to use the accumulated gauge according to the situation, for example, whether to use it for romantic moves on fellow monsters or to activate Beast Mode.

Now, the existence of " companion monsters" has been mentioned several times in this introduction, but how in the world do you increase the number of companion monsters? But this does not mean that some special action is required. When you battle a monster in the field, you may see a message "You have successfully scouted for XX! appears immediately after the monster is defeated, the scouting process is complete. When you return to the base and go to the reception desk, you will see a list of monsters that have been successfully scouted listed as "applicants." Just select the monster you want to join and you are good to go. In fact, this is not the only way to join a monster. In addition, each fellow monster has an "evaluation (rank)," which is indicated by a rainbow, gold, silver, or bronze frame. Of these, the "rainbow" ranks are the rarest, so if you find one, you definitely want it to join you.

The scouting system is packed with the fun of finding new monsters to join the ranks, as well as the fun of searching for monsters with rare ratings, and it is sure to make battles with enemies unstoppable.

The essence of Treasure Life RPG lies in "treasure hunting"! Use your treasure compass and monster vision to dig for treasure!

From the introduction up to this point, this title may seem like a relatively orthodox action RPG. However, as the title "Treasure Life RPG" suggests, the most exciting part of the game is the "treasure hunt".

In addition to the legendary Seven Dragonstones, there are many other treasures in the land of the endless dragons, and Camus and Maya will be searching for them as they venture around the world. However, the treasures are buried in the ground, and you cannot find rare treasures by simply walking around the field, and of course, they do not appear on the map. This is where the "treasure compass" comes in. Pressing L + B on the field activates this ability, and a compass is deployed around the player. The compass's glowing needle points in the direction where the treasure lies. This analog sensation of relying on the compass to move forward is a very exciting experience, just like a treasure hunt. When the location of the treasure is approaching, the monsters will tell you with a text announcement, such as "It looks like it's nearby," as well as a blurb with a treasure chest symbol.

When the location of the treasure approaches and the fellow monsters begin to make noise, you can activate the "Monster Vision" ability. This ability allows you to see clues to the location of buried treasure through the eyes of your fellow monsters. The number of clues displayed is determined by the number of fellow monsters in the party, all of which are visions of the same treasure, but from different perspectives.

The player must use these clues to find the location where the treasure is buried, for example, "There is a waterfall in the distance ...... and a tree nearby ....... This is similar to a picture-finding game or brain-training puzzle game, and is a completely different type of fun from the action RPG elements introduced so far. The experience of "walking around while comparing the field and the three clues with your eyes to find the matching locations" has an analog feel similar to the aforementioned treasure compass, and I felt that the game successfully incorporated "treasure hunting" into a digital game.

Incidentally, this "monster vision" is a hint from the viewpoint of a fellow monster, so it is a way to see the characteristics of each monster. For example, a drakey's view is a black-and-white scene, a magical hat's view is a scene seen through a hat, and a wandering yokozuna's view is a scene seen through the bars of a helmet.

The ability to experience the view from the monster's side in such a realistic manner is quite rare, not only in the "Dragon Quest" series, but in the gaming world as a whole. It is an elaborate presentation that makes you feel deep emotionally charged, wondering how Drakey and the wandering yoroi have been fighting humans with such a view all this time. ......

Now, once you have successfully dug up the treasure, the next step is to "appraise" it. When the treasure is brought back to the base, the appraisal begins, revealing the contents of the treasure and the appraised value. The treasure was silhouetted when it was dug up, but its true identity is revealed, and the thrilling experience of the appraised value gradually opening up from the first rank is inevitable and addictive. In addition, since the appraised value of the treasure changes depending on its condition, such as "top quality," "normal," or "flawed," there is also the pleasure of searching for treasures of better quality.

There is a wide variety of treasures, including familiar items from the "Dragon Quest" series, items that will move fans with nostalgia, and items that will make them laugh, all of which will stimulate the desire to collect. The game's content is simple enough, "Encounter unknown treasures and discover their value," but when you actually play it, you will feel a tremendous sense of excitement that will get your brain juices flowing, and the system makes you painfully sympathize with Camus and Maya's "love of treasure hunting.

As they collect treasures, Camus and Maya's group ranks increase according to the total amount of treasure they collect, which in turn increases what they can do at their base and their abilities as treasure hunters. Furthermore, as a rank bonus, the value of the treasure is increased and it becomes easier for prospective members to join the troupe.

Incidentally, the target amount for the next rank is displayed as gold accumulates in a box, which is not only easy to understand visually, but also tickles the excitement of the players. In particular, the spectacular gold that comes pouring down like rain from the sky when a player's rank is raised is a must-see.

This is amazing! Dragon Quest Treasures: Aoki Hitomi to Ozora no Rashinban" Author's Advisory Points

From here, I would like to introduce "my personal recommendation" for this title.

1. The treasure hunt is so much fun that you lose track of when to stop!

The most important point of this work, in my opinion, is the "fun of searching for treasures. As I mentioned earlier, the flow of "search, find, appraise, increase group rank" is highly addictive, and it is easy to lose track of when to stop. In addition to "treasure," which can be found by using the treasure compass or monster vision, there is also a type of treasure called "junk," which can be found by walking around without using any abilities. The "Junk" is the setting of the adventure in this work.

The land of dragons, the stage for adventure in this work, consists of five floating islands in addition to the island where the base is located.
Each island is unique and vast in its own way, including "Fascar Island," which is divided into upper and lower levels and is accessed by a lift; "Kufi Desert Island," with its desert and rocky mountains; and "Theria Ice and Snow Island," where everything is covered with snow and ice. Moreover, there is no set order in which to visit the five floating islands, and once the game has progressed to a certain degree, visitors can visit any of the islands as they wish.

This "freedom of adventure" and the "vastness of the stage" add to the fun of the treasure hunt, and the game is sure to make you say, "I can play this game as long as I want. ...... ! The "freedom of adventure" and the "vastness of the setting" add to the fun of the treasure hunt. This is not an exaggeration, as you will understand when you actually play the game.

2. Monsters full of charm, with a variety of voices and "search coordination" to liven up the adventure

As I have already mentioned, in this game, you can explore with your fellow monsters, and I must say that I am particularly impressed by their charms.

The first point I would like to introduce is the sounds of the monsters. The monsters in the game have their own unique sounds that they make along the way. Slime makes a "Slap! Dora!" for a drakey, "Dora! Kicky!" and "Kikki!" for Drakey. All of the voices are unique and cute, and will liven up your treasure-hunting experience. Moreover, even within the same species, there are different voice patterns, such as "Drakey with a low, calm voice" and "Drakey with a high, lively voice," so you can even sense the differences in the personalities of the different monsters. The game is designed to give players a deep sense of immersion, as if they are "adventuring with living monsters.

Another element that I would like to mention that allows players to enjoy the charms of their fellow monsters is the "search linkage. This is a system that allows players to borrow the abilities of monsters in the field in order to facilitate the search for treasure. For example, you can climb on top of a slime and jump to great heights, or hold onto a drakey and glide through the air with the flap of its wings. Not only is this a useful tool for treasure hunting, but the cute actions of the monsters as they display their abilities are a charming and relaxing element of the game.

Enjoy the freedom of treasure hunting with "Dragon Quest Treasures: Aoki Hitomi to Ozora no Rashinban"!

So, that's our advance play review of "DQ Treasures".
