The gold standard of beautiful girls' mahjong games is back in a big way in 2025! Review of "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Saturn Tribute
Have you ever played mahjong games? Mahjong games can be found not only in home video games and game arcades, but also in smartphone games and PC games these days. This time, we bring you a review of the latest such mahjong game, "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Saturn Tribute".
The legendary beautiful girl mahjong game "Suchie Pai" can be enjoyed on Nintendo Switch! Four Sega Saturn versions in one!
Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Saturn Tribute" is a single package of the four games released for the Sega Saturn from the "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai" series of beautiful girl mahjong games that were popular in game centers and for home use. In addition to the familiar two-on-one mahjong games with beautiful girls that include cheating and rewards, this title is also packed with adventure game elements and fun elements, making it a very enjoyable title.
Before introducing the game, let me briefly introduce "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai".
Idol Janshi Suchie Pai" is a series of mahjong games featuring beautiful girls and cheating, starting with "Bishojo Janshi Suchie Pai" for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), released by JALECO in 1993. The game is characterized by the unique and beautiful girl characters created by manga artist Kenichi Sonoda, including Kyoko Misaki, a.k.a. Suchee Pai, and the character voices enthusiastically performed by a cast of splendid voice actors, including Mika Kanai as Suchee Pai, and is a "character game" that transcends the framework of mahjong games and has gained a large fan base. The game has created many fans as a "character game" that transcends the boundaries of mahjong games. Starting with the Super NES version, the series has been developed in a variety of media, including arcades, Sega Saturn, PlayStation, PlayStation2, and cell phone applications, and even now, nearly 30 years after the release of the first Super NES version, the series is still very popular.
One of the features of the Suche Pie series is the "cheat items" that can be obtained through the "Panel Match" mini-game.
In this game, players play a game of nervous breakdown, in which they have to flip the panels a number of times according to the number of yaku they have won in mahjong (han-sou). The cheating items include the "Suchee Stick," which can be used to get an Ataripai in one shot when reaching, and the "Hyper Seikan," which can destroy and nullify an Ataripai tile that has been inadvertently thrown out. These are all too powerful to be called "cheats". The panel match and the cheating items are the best part of the Suchee Pai series, and are elements that cannot be experienced in normal mahjong.
Another feature of the Soochow Pai series that must not be forgotten is the "Reward Scene. This is a fascinating reward for winning a game, in which the player can see his or her opponent's beautiful girl in such-and-such an appearance. Please note that the reward scenes in this title have been modified to conform to current rating standards when ported. However, even with these modifications, the thrill of seeing beautiful girls in their most unadulterated forms in front of your eyes is something that will never fade.
This title is a Switch version of the "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai" series, which includes four titles originally released for the Sega Saturn. The four titles included are "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Special + Remix," "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai II," "Suchie Pai Adventure Dokidoki Nightmare," and "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Mecha Limited Edition. All of these titles are part of the "Saturn Tribute" project, a reissue of Saturn classics using the "Zebra Engine," produced by City Connection and developed independently by City Connection.
Let's take a look at each of the four titles in detail, one at a time.
Let's take a closer look at the four titles included in this title! Not only mahjong, but also a love adventure!
1,Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Special + Remix
This title is a coupling of "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Special" released on February 24, 1995 and "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Remix" released on September 29, 1995.
Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Special" is the first Saturn version of "Suchie Pai", a port of the arcade version to the Sega Saturn with new visuals, voices, and game balance.
The game is a "bishojo manzai game," and is a game in which the player selects one of seven characters, each of whom has a different speciality in the game, and plays mahjong with the remaining characters in a two-person game. The game is a game in which players select one of seven characters, each of whom has different Tsumikomi skills. One of the charms of this title is that each character has a different dialogue between the two players.
As a side note, this title was released only three months after the release of the Sega Saturn, and it has a unique rating of "MA-18". The only game in Japan with this "MA-18" rating is "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Special". In this sense, it is a monumental title.
On the other hand, "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Remix" is a different version of "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Special" with a new BGM during mahjong. The game itself is identical to "Special.
The original Sega Saturn version had some graphical changes from the "Special" version, but the visual scenes in the Nintendo Switch version have been changed to comply with the current game expression rating. However, the visual scenes in this Nintendo Switch version are the same as those in the "Special" version, in accordance with the current game expression rating, so please keep this in mind.
As a side note, the self-deprecating (?) introduction of the game on the title selection screen, "If you release this six months later, you'll be bursting with anger. Fans who know the history of the game at the time may find this interesting as well as nostalgic.
Idol Janshi Suchie Pai II
Based on the second arcade version, "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai II" is the second version of the Saturn version of Suchie Pai, which has been significantly upgraded and rearranged in terms of animation, graphics, and sound. The Sega Saturn version of the game consisted of two discs, the main story and extras, but the Nintendo Switch version has a system where the player selects a disc from the title screen.
The first disc, the main story, features the main character Kyoko Misaki, a.k.a. Suchee Pai, who gathers her friends to play mahjong in order to solve a kidnapping case and spread the word about mahjong. The player chooses one of four characters as a partner at the start of the game, and one of the most exciting aspects of the game is that the story changes depending on the partner chosen.
Compared to "Special," the mahjong screen is more lively, with the characters more prominently displayed. The beautiful girls add a lot of excitement to the game with their comical actions and cute voices.
In addition, "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai II" has three difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, and Hard) to choose from, and an "Omakase Mode" in which a character will play for you by pressing certain buttons while you are playing mahjong. It should be noted that this allows even those who are not good at mahjong, or who do not know anything about mahjong, to experience the world of Soochow Pai.
Disc 2 is an "omake disc," which offers three different contents from the main game.
The "Free Matchup" mode allows players to freely combine a total of 15 characters to play against each other. Unlike the main game, there are no panel matches or reward scenes, but players are given one of three special moves in advance.
In the "Voice Actor Interviews" mode, you can enjoy newly shot footage of Mika Kanai, Yuko Mizutani, and Ai Orikasa, who voice the characters in the Saturn version of the game, at the time of the game's release. Video clips, interviews, and making-of footage can be viewed.
Miyuri's Room" allows players to enjoy talking with Miyuri Sakurai, aka "Miyuri," and changing her clothes after clearing the free game. The "Miyuri's Room" was first introduced in "Soochie Pie II" and has become a standard feature in subsequent titles, making it a must-see for those who first experienced the Soochie Pie series through the Nintendo Switch version.
3,Soochie Pie Adventure: Doki Doki Nightmare
Unlike the previous two titles, "Soochie Pie Adventure: Doki Doki Nightmare" is a completely original title for home video game consoles. This is the first in the Suchee Pai series to be a romance adventure game, and can be played even if you do not know the rules of mahjong. This title also consists of two discs, and the player selects which disc to play from the title screen.
The protagonist of this love adventure is, as it should be, the player himself. The story begins on a Monday when the protagonist, while enjoying a game at the arcade "YOU & ME," is approached by Kyoko Misaki, a part-time clerk known as "Suchee Pie. During the six days from Monday to Saturday morning, the player strolls around Kamiyoga-cho, where Suchie Pai and her friends live, interacting with the girls and trying to find the real culprit of a mysterious incident that occurred in the town and solve the case. There are 13 girls in the game, and the true ending can be seen when all the girls are conquered.
In addition to the main adventure, Disc 1 contains "Recollection Mode," which allows you to view CG and movies seen during the game, and "Omake," a stand-alone mini shooting game "Ninja Jajamaru-kun: Shin Onizan Ninpocho," which you will play at the beginning of the main story.
Disc 2 contains "Date Mode," in which you can enjoy a later story with the girl who successfully confessed her feelings to you on Disc 1, "Recollection Mode," in which you can view your memories of the characters in Date Mode, "Sound Test," in which you can listen to the theme song and BGM used in the main story, and three types of competitive action games. The game also includes "Omake," in which you can enjoy three types of competitive action games.
The "bonus" action game can be played with multiple players on a single screen by preparing enough controllers for the number of players, and it also supports "osusowake play," in which the Joy-Cons are held horizontally.
At any rate, "Suchee Pie Adventure: Doki Doki Nightmare" is an ambitious work that transcends the framework of a mahjong game and has evolved into a "character game.
Although it may seem like a title for fans of the Suchee Pie series who have played the series before, this title is also recommended for first-time players of the series, as you will learn more about each character's setting and personality as the main character meets each of the girls. Players who are new to the series may want to play "Doki-Doki Nightmare" first to deepen their understanding of and attachment to the characters, and then enjoy the mahjong game (and rewarding scenes) in "Special" and "II" (......). It might be a good way to play.
4,Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Mecha Limited Edition
Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Mecha Limited Edition" is an arranged port of "Special" and "II" and includes a free game mode with a total of 36 characters and a new adventure game. This title offers a rich variety of enjoyment from mahjong to adventure, and is comprised of three large discs.
Disc 1 contains a version of "Remix" with some visual scenes changed, and Disc 2 contains a version of "II" with some visual scenes changed and an improved game system. Special" and "II" included in the Nintendo Switch version, and enjoy the differences. The "visual scene changes" are, to be more specific, the girls in the reward scenes have been replaced with swimsuits, so you can play the game in the comfort of your living room (?). That's right.
Disc 3 is an extra disc that contains a number of modes exclusive to this title.
Adventure" is an adventure game with the same system as "Doki-Doki Nightmare," and offers a new scenario exclusive to this title.
Mahjong Free Battle" is a mode in which players can freely combine as many as 36 characters to play 2-player mahjong. Characters from Jaleco's comical shooting game "Game Tengoku" participate in the game as guests, adding a festive touch to the fun.
Other features include the standard "Miyuri's Room" where you can talk with Miyuri and change her clothes after clearing free matches, a "Sound Test" where you can listen to the original theme song and in-game BGM, and a "Seiyu Home Page" where you can view an original information corner featuring the voice actors who appeared in this title. The disc also includes extra elements. The volume of disc 3 alone is so impressive that it will fill your stomach to the brim.
This is the best part! My personal recommendation for "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Saturn Tribute
Now, let me introduce some of my personal highlights of the game.
1, Cute girls who talk a lot!
This is not so much a recommendation for the Nintendo Switch version as for the Suchee Pai series itself, but the characters in this title talk a lot.
Not only in the event conversation scenes between mahjong games, but also during the game, panel match mini-games, and reward scenes, the girls talk a lot to liven up the game. Since they are this chatty in a mahjong game, they are even more so in an adventure game. In the romance adventure game "Doki Doki Nightmare," for example, the main character's lines and choices are displayed in text, but the girls' lines are spoken in voice only, without text.
The Suchee Pie series is not just a game, but a voice drama or an anime, with dialogue that is so interchangeable that it is almost like a voice drama or an anime. The game is not only fun to play, but also very satisfying to listen to. We strongly recommend wearing earphones or headphones so that you do not miss a single word of the conversation between the beautiful girls. The Nintendo Switch version of this title also introduces each of the four included titles with a special "chat," so be sure to listen to that as well.
2. various useful functions unique to the current-gen port
This port of the Sega Saturn version to the Nintendo Switch includes many original features unique to the current-gen console version. In particular, Quick Save and Quick Load can be performed at any time, except during movie playback, allowing you to redo or stop the game at any time, which is very useful. This is very useful.
The most noteworthy of these convenient functions is the "rewind" function. As the name suggests, this function allows you to rewind play for a certain amount of time, and if used while playing mahjong, it can be a cheat that far surpasses cheating items. Of course, rewinding time to match panels during a panel match is also cheating. In addition to these cheat-like uses, it is also very useful and recommended for use in minor situations, such as when you miss a line of dialogue, when you want to go back to a previous screen, or when you want to choose a different option in an adventure game.
All in all, I felt that the addition of these functions made the game more than just a port, but a work that allows you to enjoy comfortable gameplay.
Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Saturn Tribute" is so full of features that you will never be able to play it all!
So, this is my review of "Idol Janshi Suchie Pai Saturn Tribute".
This title, which combines the four titles of the Suchee Pai series for the Sega Saturn into a single package, is by all means a voluminous and fascinating game that is impossible to play through in a short amount of time. If you are not very good at mahjong or if you want to learn the game, please take this opportunity to get this title and enjoy playing mahjong with beautiful girls as much as you like.
